Now, she’s been assigned to apprentice with Andel Lambros, a 200 year-old heavenly archer that looks 24. The purpose of the cupids is easy enough for the newbie to understand, and to resent. But the significance of their work doesn’t have time to sink in when Evelyn is given her first assignment. Cupid elders have received a message and need their newest, least experienced, comrade-in-arms—Evelyn—to retrieve an arrow. That means she must release a mortal from an everlasting love. When she discovers the arrow is fastened to none other than her own love, Tate’s heart, Evelyn battles with letting him go. The century old war for love may be lost if Evelyn doesn’t gear up to save them all. Being a cupid takes more than a bow and some arrows. Evelyn is challenged to deliver her arrow, let go of her first love, and trust an ancient brooding cupid with her existence. Giving up her lost love’s arrow as an offering will be more painful than getting hit by a streetcar, and she knows how that feels since it’s what started the whole predicament. Will Evelyn be able to keep her covenant to her fellow cupids? Will she save them all or lose everything trying? *The Cupids is the eighth novella in the Supernatural Chronicles: New Orleans. The boxed set will be released in January 2016.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Medieval Venuses and Cupids analyses the transformations of the love deities in later Middle English Chaucerian poetry, academic Latin discourses on classical myth (including astrology, natural philosophy, and commentaries on classical Roman literature), and French conventions that associate Venus and Cupid with Ovidian arts of love. Whereas existing studies of Venus and Cupid contend that they always and everywhere represent two loves (good and evil), the author argues that medieval discourses actually promulgate diverse, multiple, and often contradictory meanings for the deities. The book establishes the range of meanings bestowed on the deities through the later Middle Ages, and draws on feminist and cultural theories to offer new models for interpreting both academic Latin discourses and vernacular poetry.

Book excerpt: Cupid became a popular figure in the literary and visual culture of post-Reformation England. He served to articulate and debate the new Protestant theory of desire, inspiring a dark version of love tragedy in which Cupid kills. But he was also implicated in other controversies, as the object of idolatrous, Catholic worship and as an adversary to female rule: Elizabeth I's encounters with Cupid were a crucial feature of her image-construction and changed subtly throughout her reign. Covering a wide variety of material such as paintings, emblems and jewellery, but focusing mainly on poetry and drama, including works by Sidney, Shakespeare, Marlowe and Spenser, Kingsley-Smith illuminates the Protestant struggle to categorise and control desire and the ways in which Cupid disrupted this process. An original perspective on early modern desire, the book will appeal to anyone interested in the literature, drama, gender politics and art history of the English Renaissance.

Or did you ever have people in your life who seemed to think they could do things better than everyone else? Maybe youve wondered what would happen if you could go back in time to rectify a mistake you think youve made. Or perhaps youve thought about why life keeps putting roadblocks in your way to being rewarded for what you know you have done. For some of us, it seems that finding the right soul mate will never happen; for others, solving problems in life situations is a calling. Human behavior and its consequence is a dynamic that we all experience in our individual ways. If youve ever heard it said that we are what we experience, then Not All So Tall Tales will provide you with some food for thought.

Book excerpt: In Imago Mortis: Mediating Images of Death in Late Medieval Culture, Ashby Kinch argues for the affirmative quality of late medieval death art and literature, providing a new, interdisciplinary approach to a well-known body of material. He demonstrates the surprising and effective ways that late medieval artists appropriated images of death and dying as a means to affirm their artistic, social, and political identities. The book dedicates each of its three sections to a pairing of a visual convention (deathbed scenes, the Three Living and Three Dead, and the Dance of Death) and a Middle English literary text (Hoccleve’s Lerne for to die, Audelay’s Three Dead Kings, and Lydgate’s Dance of Death).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: No volume about the spectacles and public performances of early modern England could pretend to treat comprehensively a body of materials so conspicuously vast. Rather than efforts to survey the territory, these essays are best understood in the original sense of the term as “essays”—as trials, attempts, experiments to open alternative ways of understanding that vast corpus of mystery plays, civic pageants, court masques and professional dramas that constitute its subject. The book crosses traditional period lines, including studies of Medieval as well as Renaissance entertainments. Once more, the essays are not organized according to a single critical or historical methodology. They employ an eclectic range of interpretive practices, reflecting the variety of interpretive approaches now current in the field. Contributors include: Tiffany J. Alkan, Robert W. Barrett, Jr., Sarah Beckwith, Tom Bishop, Peter Cockett, Richard K. Emmerson, Peter Holland, Nora Johnson, Richard C. McCoy, Lauren Shohet, and Robert E. Stillman.
