Book excerpt: O trabalho foi conduzido em área experimental da Embrapa cerrados, em Planaltina-DF, objetivando estudar a eficiência quanto à produção de biomassa, cobertura do solo e seus efeitos na dinâmica de plantas daninhas das seguintes culturas de secessão ao milho: aveia-preta, crotalária-júncea, feijão-bravo-do-ceára, guandu cv. Caqui, mucuna, girassol e milheto BN-2, nos sistemas convencional e plantio direto, em solo de Cerrado. A biomassa das culturas de sucessão foi obtida quando cada espécie apresentava 50% de florescimento. A matéria seca das plantas daninhas foi avaliada aos 60 dias após a semeadura das culturas de sucessão. Avaliou-se também a população de plantas daninhas, sendo as amostragens realizadas aos 30 e 60 dias após a semeadura das culturas de sucessão e durante a cultura do milho, aos 45 dias após a sua semeadura. O banco de sementes de plantas daninhas no solo foi estimado, coletando-se amostras de solo em julho de 2001. A cobertura do solo foi determinada nas seguintes épocas: aos 30 e 60 dias após a semeadura de sucessão, em agosto (período da seca), em outubro (depois das primeiras chuvas) e na cultura do milho, aos 15 e aos 45 dias após a sua semeadura. A mucuna e o feijão-bravo-do-ceará foram as espécies que apresentaram as maiores taxas de cobertura do solo e produção de biomassa, em relação ás demais culturas de sucessão. A produção de biomassa pelo girassol não foi eficiente como cobertura do solo, o sistema plantio direto acrescentou maior produção de biomassas verde e seca pelas culturas de sucessão em relação ao sistema convencional. Os sistema de manejo do solo afetaram a dinâmica de plantas daninhas. O plantios direto apresentou maior redução no banco de sementes no solo, porém apresentou maior taxa de emergência de plântulas no campo, em relação ao sistema convencional. As espécies aveia-preta, feijão-bravo-do-ceará, girassol, gandu e mucuna, utilizadas em sucessão ao milho, reduziram a matéria seca das plantas daninhas, em relação ao tratamento sem utilização de planta de cobertura. A avaliação do banco de sementes no solo foi mais eficiente para testar a eficácia das culturas de cobertura do que a emergência de plântulas na dinâmica de plantas daninhas.
