Hispanics comprise the largest minority group, which warrants special attention. Nurses have the most direct patient contact in comparison to other healthcare professionals, hence, they should utilize this vantage point to provide culturally competent care to patients. Nurses must strive to meet the needs of the Hispanic population, provide language appropriate education, decrease transportation and cost barriers, and improve access to quality health care services in the heart of Hispanic communities. This requires identifying and overcoming barriers that prevent equitable access to healthcare, such as finances, language, and immigration status. Children and immigrant subgroups also merit distinctive consideration because of their unique healthcare needs and continued disparities in health. Culturally competent nursing care is rapidly becoming the center of focus by government and healthcare organizations and the cornerstone of quality nursing care of minority populations. Therefore, it is imperative for nursing professionals to take the lead in the improvement of healthcare practices. The overarching goal of this document is to improve health outcomes of the Hispanic population by promoting culturally competent nursing care. Culturally competent nursing care is a key element to improving the health of the Hispanic population.
