Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Paleoindians first arrived in Texas more than eleven thousand years ago, although relatively few sites of such early peoples have been discovered. Texas has a substantial post-Paleoindian record, however, and there are more than fifty thousand prehistoric archaeological sites identified across the state. This comprehensive volume explores in detail the varied experience of native peoples who lived on this land in prehistoric times. Chapters on each of the regions offer cutting-edge research, the culmination of years of work by dozens of the most knowledgeable experts. Based on the archaeological record, the discussion of the earliest inhabitants includes a reclassification of all known Paleoindian projectile point types and establishes a chronology for the various occupations. The archaeological data from across the state of Texas also allow authors to trace technological changes over time, the development of intensive fishing and shellfish collecting, funerary customs and the belief systems they represented, long-term changes in settlement mobility and character, landscape use, and the eventual development of agricultural societies. The studies bring the prehistory of Texas Indians all the way up through the Late Prehistoric period (ca. a.d. 700–1600). The extensively illustrated chapters are broadly cultural-historical in nature but stay strongly focused on important current research problems. Taken together, they present careful and exhaustive considerations of the full archaeological (and paleoenvironmental) record of Texas.

This book was released on 1984 with total page 161 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Red River Army Depot is located in Bowie County, northeast Texas, and contains just over 19,000 acres. As an installation of the U.S. Army DARCOM command, the Depot is a steward of public lands with the responsibility for the management of all cultural resources on its property. A review of existing data concerning the physical setting and the cultural environment of the area, including previous archeological investigations, has revealed that the facility contains known prehistoric cultural resources (two sites) and has a very high potential for presently unrecorded historic sites (239 potential historic resources). Archival research has documented the presence of numerous farmsteads and several cemeteries on the Depot property. For general compliance with the National Historic Preservation Act and Army Regulation AR 420-40, and in order to assure that the Depot's on-going silviculture program and the proposed future oil and gas exploration leasing and facility expansion are in compliance with Section 106 of that Act, it is recommended that the Red River Army Depot develop a facility Historic Preservation Plan as a long-term goal. Such a plan should be based on a field inventory of the archeological resources retained on the facility. The cost of such a inventory and evaluation program is presented in this report. Originator-supplied key words include: Archeological management, Army installation management, Environmental assessment, Cultural resources management, Northeast Texas prehistory, North Texas history, Northeast Texas paleoenvironments.

This book was released on 1988 with total page 85 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based upon the lack of contextual integrity at site 41BW182 and the limited research potential of 41BW183, neither site is considered eligible for nomination to the National Register of Historic Places. Given the lack of knowledge of upland site contexts, however, it is recommended that site 41BW182 be preserved through avoidance. If avoidance is not feasible, it is recommended that the removal of site 41BW182 be monitored in order to document the presence or absence of features. No further work is recommended for site 41BW183. (fr).
