Book excerpt: This report presents the results of significance testing on 56 prehistoric cultural resource sites located in maneuver training areas at Fort Hood, Texas. This document has been prepared in compliance with Army Regulation 420-40 (Historic Preservation), as is required by the Fort Hood Historic Preservation Plan. Under contract to Fort Hood, the testing was conducted by TRC Mariah Associates, Inc. during 1994 and 1995. The 56 prehistoric sites were tested using 158 manually excavated test pits, totaling 185 cubic meters, and 187 backhoe trenches totaling about 3,400 cubic meters. These excavations discovered 88 prehistoric features including 44 burned rock middens, 24 hearths, five burned rock mounds, eight burned rock concentrations, three burials, two ash lens, and two occupation zones. The manual excavations removed 4,704 kg (5.8 tons) of burned rock and collected more than 58,000 artifacts and samples. These include 47,519 lithic debitage, 5,206 bone specimens, 2,361 samples, 949 bivalve shells, 883 lithic tools, and 216 projectile points.

Book excerpt: This document presents the results and conclusions of archeological investigations on 57 prehistoric sites at Fort Hood in Bell and Coryell counties, Central Texas. The objective of the investigations was to test each site for eligibility for inclusion to the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP), as is required in the current Historic Preservation Plan for Fort Hood. Site research potential was assessed with respect to research questions and data needs outlined in the existing prehistoric research design for Fort Hood. Sites with significant research potential, as demonstrated by diverse abundant data sets, were assessed as eligible for inclusion to the NRHP. The 57 prehistoric sites were tested using manually excavated test pits and mechanically excavated trenches. At two rockshelters, powered rock saws were used to recover samples of indurated tufa. The test pits ranged in depth from 20 cm to 620 cm below the modern surface. Testing documented a total of 116 features including 47 hearths, 26 burned rock concentrations, 25 burned rock middens, 8 burned rock mounds, 4 burned rock pavements, two lithic caches, and one each of mussel shell concentration, carbonized post, ash lens, and burial pit. Fieldwork recovered a total of 78,893 artifacts and samples, including 66,543 prehistoric and 75 historic artifacts. The most frequent artifact class was lithic debitage, followed distantly by bone debitage, bivalve umboes, and lithic tools. The assessment of site significance is explicitly linked to the existing prehistoric research design for Fort Hood and focuses on data needs of the chronology, subsistence, and technology research domains, supplemented as necessary with information on integrity of deposits. Book excerpt: From January to April, 1990, the Archaeological Research Laboratory at Texas A & M University conducted a cultural resources survey for Delivery Order Number 10 of 26 sq km (6,425 acres) at Fort Hood. As a result of the survey, 77 archaeological sites were discovered or relocated, and recorded. The 54 prehistoric sites show evidence of human occupation spanning the last 8,500 years. The 23 historic sites represent the initial migrations into Central Texas by Anglo settlers beginning about 1850 and ending with the purchase of the land by the Army in the 1940s and 1950s. Preliminary recommendations regarding the research potential of each site were based solely on the surface indications of the sites, with the result that a number of sites will require shovel testing in order to appraise the depth of the deposits, and/or documentary and informant research. Lithic remains constitute the most abundant artifact category recovered during the present survey. During the survey of 41CV1540, five discrete concentrations of lithic debris consisting of two distinct chert types were encountered. The concentrated nature of these debris areas indicate that they may be largely intact. Analysis of the debitage shows that a slightly different reduction strategy was used on the two types of material based on the different amount of cortex present and a different rate of loading during flake removal.
