Book excerpt: This report discusses the use of biomass as an energy feedstock, which is emerging as a potentially viable alternative to address U.S. energy security concerns, foreign oil dependence, rural economic development, and diminishing sources of conventional energy. Biomass (organic matter that can be converted into energy) may include food crops, crops for energy (e.g., switchgrass or prairie perennials), crop residues, wood waste and byproducts, and animal manure. This report discusses legislation regarding biomass, the evolving definition of biomass, and the positions of supporters and detractors of biomass as an alternative energy source.
Book Synopsis Towards Sustainable Production and Use of Resources by :
Download or read book Towards Sustainable Production and Use of Resources written by and published by UNEP/Earthprint. This book was released on 2009 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report was produced by the Working Group on biofuels of the International Panel for Sustainable Resource Managemet. It provides an overview of the key problems and perspectives toward sustainable production and use of biofuels. It is based on an extensive literature study, taking into account recent major reviews. The focus is on so-called first generation biofuels while considering further lines of development. In the overall context of enhancing resource productivity, options for more efficient and sustainable production and use of biomass are examined. In particular, "modern biomass use" for energetic purposes, such as biomass used for (co-)generation of heat and power and liquid biofuels for transport, are addressed and related to the use of biomass for food and material purposes. Whereas improving the efficiency of biomass production plays a certain role towards enhancing sustainability, progress will ultimately depend on a more efficient use of biotic (and abiotic) resources (incl. for instance an increased fuel economy of car fleets), although a full consideration of all relevant strategies towards this end (e.g changing diets high in animal based foods and reducing food losses) is beyond the scope of this report.

Book Synopsis Biomass Conversion by : Chinnappan Baskar
Download or read book Biomass Conversion written by Chinnappan Baskar and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-05-08 with total page 484 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The consumption of petroleum has surged during the 20th century, at least partially because of the rise of the automobile industry. Today, fossil fuels such as coal, oil, and natural gas provide more than three quarters of the world's energy. Unfortunately, the growing demand for fossil fuel resources comes at a time of diminishing reserves of these nonrenewable resources. The worldwide reserves of oil are sufficient to supply energy and chemicals for only about another 40 years, causing widening concerns about rising oil prices. The use of biomass to produce energy is only one form of renewable energy that can be utilized to reduce the impact of energy production and use on the global environment. Biomass can be converted into three main products such as energy, biofuels and fine chemicals using a number of different processes. Today, it is a great challenge for researchers to find new environmentally benign methodology for biomass conversion, which are industrially profitable as well. This book focuses on the conversion of biomass to biofuels, bioenergy and fine chemicals with the interface of biotechnology, microbiology, chemistry and materials science. An international scientific authorship summarizes the state-of-the-art of the current research and gives an outlook on future developments.

Book Synopsis Lignin Utilization Strategies by : Chang Geun Yoo
Download or read book Lignin Utilization Strategies written by Chang Geun Yoo and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Emerging applications of lignin Lignin has great potential as a sustainable, renewable resource for aromatic molecules that can be used in downstream applications. However, its natural heterogeneity and complexity are substantial barriers to its efficient utilization. Industrial lignin, a byproduct from the pulping and biorefinery industries, is usually burned or directly discharged as waste. This work provides a comprehensive exploration of recent lignin utilization strategies with chapters written by experts from agricultural science and engineering, biotechnology, biology, catalysis, chemical engineering, chemistry, wood science, and other related fields.
