The text analysis phase of the study was performed to understand the composition of an initial review corpus, the results of which led to additional database queries, providing unique information on the review topic. A systematic literature review demonstrated the existence of a limited body of knowledge on human characteristic and cultural challenges to construction automation that comprised of six broad sub-categories: physiological, human-robot collaboration (HRC), human-machine interface, industry culture, information and management systems, and legal related challenges. The cultural consensus analysis component of the study found a single response pattern in collected questionnaire data, indicating the existence of a consistent domain of knowledge of construction automation among surveyed construction professionals. This study highlights that human challenges and cultural beliefs in construction automation are key issues with which to consider in the design and implementation of automation schemes in the industry. The originality of this study lies in the application of cultural consensus theory methodology to response data from industry professionals, and more such studies are encouraged to determine the variability of the cultural understanding of automation in the construction industry across different groups and locations.
