Book Synopsis The Mystery and the World by : Maria Clara Bingemer
Download or read book The Mystery and the World written by Maria Clara Bingemer and published by Lutterworth Press. This book was released on 2017-02-23 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Mystery and the World, Maria Clara Bingemer explores how the place of religion in society has dramatically shifted since the Enlightenment. The modern era is characterised by a major change in humanity's fundamental desires that means that reason has taken the place of faith. Human beings, in their ongoing search for a scientific understanding of the world, have drifted away from seeking any essence of transcendence in their lives. Bingemer examines this transition and how, especially inthe postmodern era, it has led to technology and superficial happiness becoming all-important as opposed to the more sacred sense of contentment that governed us for centuries prior to the Enlightenment. In her discussion, however, Bingemer demonstrates that we as humans have not lost our innate desire to believe in a higher power and that, even in our world of instant satisfaction, we still need to fill the void left by religion. Through well-researched analysis of the modern era and discussion of some of the mystics of more recent times, she reveals to readers how our religious belief, whilst changed, is not dead and is still an important aspect of our existence.
Book Synopsis Covenant and Contract by : Adela Cortina Orts
Download or read book Covenant and Contract written by Adela Cortina Orts and published by Peeters Publishers. This book was released on 2003 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modern republicanism nevertheless turns liberal and opts for the contract between independent beings as fiat of the political world." "But the Contract is not self-sufficient, since anyone who looks back to their roots will come to the narration of reciprocal recognition. The Covenant falls similarly short, as those who forget the parable of independence may well have a disregard for justice." "In a dialogue with the most relevant philosophical currents of the age, the book proposes an articulation of politics, ethics and religion appropriate for our own time, starting from the contract between independent beings and from the reciprocal recognition of those who know themselves to be human."--Jacket.
Book Synopsis Humanities and Option for the Poor by : Clemens Sedmak
Download or read book Humanities and Option for the Poor written by Clemens Sedmak and published by LIT Verlag Münster. This book was released on 2005 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The concept of a preferential option for the poor calls for a special attention to the weakest members of a particular society. Such an option is a challenge for the ethics of science as well. How can we pursue an "option for the poor" in the humanities? Can we do that without generating "ideologies"? This volume gives an account of these questions. Representatives of sociology, religious studies, law, economics, theology, history and philosophy try to answer this question. It is manifest that the discussion of an option for the poor is also a matter of intellectual integrity.
Book Synopsis Postmodernidad by : Antonio Cruz Suárez
Download or read book Postmodernidad written by Antonio Cruz Suárez and published by Editorial CLIE. This book was released on 2005-08-01 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
Book Synopsis The Priority of Christ by : Robert Barron
Download or read book The Priority of Christ written by Robert Barron and published by Brazos Press. This book was released on 2007-06 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For a long time, Christians have tried to bridge the divide between Christianity and secular liberalism with philosophizing and theologizing. In The Priority of Christ, Father Robert Barron shows that the answer to this debate--and the way to move forward--lies in Jesus. Barron transcends the usual liberal/conservative or Protestant/Catholic divides with a postliberal Catholicism that brings the focus back on Jesus as revealed in the New Testament narratives. Barron's classical Catholic post-liberalism will be of interest to a broad audience including not only the academic community but also preachers and general readers interested in entering the dialogue between Catholicism and postliberalism.

Book Synopsis The Failure of Modern Civilization and the Struggle for a "deep" Alternative by : Claudia von Werlhof
Download or read book The Failure of Modern Civilization and the Struggle for a "deep" Alternative written by Claudia von Werlhof and published by Beiträge zur Dissidenz. This book was released on 2011 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Western civilization is the Utopia of a better and higher life on Earth. The globalization of neo-liberalism proves that this project has failed. The paradigm of «Critical Theory of Patriarchy» explains this failure and discusses alternatives. By confronting the central civilizations in history, the egalitarian, life-oriented matriarchal one, and the hierarchical, nature and life dominating, hostile patriarchal one, we see that 5000 years of patriarchy have «replaced» matriarchies and nature itself by a «progressive» counter-world of «capital». This transformation characterizes «capitalist patriarchy» including «socialism». Its demise is due to the «alchemical» destruction of the world's resources, thought of, theologically legitimized and fetishized as «creation». This violence is not recognized. Elites have, instead, begun with a new «military alchemy», treating the whole Planet as weapon of mass destruction. Hence, the «Planetary Movement for Mother Earth».

Book Synopsis The New Jewish Argentina (paperback) by : Adriana Brodsky
Download or read book The New Jewish Argentina (paperback) written by Adriana Brodsky and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2012-09-28 with total page 413 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Congratulations to Adriana Brodsky and Raanan Rein whose edited volume has been chosen as the winner of the 2013 Latin American Jewish Studies Association Book Prize! The New Jewish Argentina aims at filling in important lacunae in the existing historiography of Jewish Argentines. Moving away from the political history of the organized community, most articles are devoted to social and cultural history, including unaffiliated Jews, women and gender, criminals, printing presses and book stores. These essays, written by scholars from various countries, consider the tensions between the national and the trans-national and offer a mosaic of identities which is relevant to all interested in Jewish history, Argentine history and students of ethnicity and diaspora. This collection problematizes the existing image of Jewish-Argentines and looks at Jews not just as persecuted ethnics, idealized agricultural workers, or as political actors in Zionist politics. "This book is a must-read for students and scholars interested in immigration to Latin America, Ethnic History, and Jewish Studies, but its readership could extend to anybody who is interested in this chapter of social and cultural history." Ariana Huberman, Haverford College

Books in this series show how early explorers found and settled Florida and the Caribbean. They tell the tales of early pioneers, both foreign and domestic. They look at the growth of Florida and the Caribbean and the attendant pressures on the environment, culture, urban development, and the movement of peoples, both forced and voluntary. The Florida and the Caribbean Open Books Series gathers the rich data available in these architectural, archaeological, cultural, and historical works, as well as the travelogues and naturalists’ sketches of the area in prior to the twentieth century, making it accessible for scholars and the general public alike. Mellon Foundation, under the Humanities Open Books program.
