Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Dahlia Manual: A Treatise on Dahlia Culture The Dahlia derives its name from the Swedish botanist, Dr. Dahl, but for a time was also known under the name of Georgina, after Prof. George, of St. Petersburg. Its earliest known history is not yet very old. About the year -657 Francisco Hernandez, a Spanish physician, wrote a book on plants, and among the plants de scribed he mentions Dahlia variabilis, the species from which most, if not all, of our pres ent varieties have originated. At that time it is probable that it was only known as one of the great multitude of botanical plants. Without much, if any, thought of its future usefulness, for we find nothing further in print for l3o years. It is quite probable, how ever, that some effort was made to improve and domesticate the plant toward the close of the eighteenth century, for in l787 Nicholas Joseph Thirerry de Menonville, a Frenchman, published an account of the Dahlias he had seen growing in the gardens in Mexico. Two years later, l7 89, seeds were sent from the Botanic Gardens of Mex ico to the Royal Gardens at Madrid, Spain, where it was given its present name. This lot of seedlings was lost two years later, as were several other lots sent to various places. But their stay, though brief, awakened a deep interest in the plant and its possibilities, and further attempts at its cultivation were now made in several European countries and it soon became quite popular. The work bestowed upon it, however, seems to have been more in the nature of a fad rather than intelligent study. Difficulty seems to have been encountered also in knowing how to keep the roots over to the next season. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Dahlia, Its Culture, Uses, and History Though this importation of the seeds was the most successful as to its produce (for from it nearly all the plants then in our gardens were obtained, ) yet the original introduction of the first Species was (on the authority of the Hortas Kewensis) from Spain, in 1789, by the Marchioness of Bute; but it is probable that the plant so introduced was soon after lost, as we do not find any further notice taken of it. The other Species, then called Coccinea, was actually flowered by Mr. John Frazer, who is said to have obtained it from France in 1802, the same year in which it was produced in the French gardens from seed procured from Madrid. It also appears, that in the autumn of 1803, Mr. Woodford flowered, at Vaux hall, a plant of Cavanille's D. Rosea, which he had Obtained from Paris; SO that, independently of one introduced by the Marchioness of Bute, in 1789, it seems that both Species had flowered in this country before the seeds were transmitted by Lady Holland. At Madrid they were a long time in the 'royal Garden without any indications of change; and it will be seen that after they were Spread through Europe, some years elapsed before any extensive in crease of variation took place. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Dahlias With respect to the popularity of the Dahlia, attention may with advantage be directed to the fact that there has always been a remarkable steadiness about the fame of this flower. Its cultivators are, it may be assumed, enthusiastic, but their enthusiasm is of a quiet kind, and not, as in the case of that of some other flowers, bubbling over and giving rise to the feeling that it will soon exhaust itself. In taking a retrospective glance over the hundred and odd years that have elapsed since the Dahlia was introduced from its Mexican home to this country, it becomes evident that, quiet though it may have been, enthusiasm as well as strenuous endeavour must have been forthcoming at an early period in the history of the Dahlia as a cultivated flower. The creation of the varied and beautiful types that are now to be seen in gardens could not well have been efiected with out something more than the carrying out, in a more or less mechanical manner, of the technical details essential to success. That something must have been enthusiasm, for without it there could not have been that constancy of pur pose, extending over a comparatively long period, which is an example to all who are engaged in plant improvement. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Walker's Up-to-Date Dahlias, 1924 I desire to call particular attention to the Dahlias listed under heading, Leading Novelty Dahlias Page 2. These have proven, both in the amateur garden and with the professional grower, to be satisfactory in every respect. I do not make flower exhibits at the Fall Dahlia Exhibitions or force my plants to get flowers that are far above the average size that we see at such exhibitions. My plants are grown as nature grows them. Bulbs selected from such stock should give far better results. I guarantee all tubers to be true to name and to arrive in perfect condition. But to guarantee the life of a plant, while under cultivation, in the hands of another person is to make a dealer responsible for the errors and inexperience of others, not to men tion freaks of weather, and unfavorable seasons, cut worms, improper planting, unfavorable loca tions and many others, which the dealer has no control over. It is therefore unreasonable to ask dealers to be responsible for the life of the plant throughout the season. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Alexander's 1928 Dahlias I find Dahlias are particularly adapted for seashore use, and not only do well, but thrive, for the reason of the moisture, and principally the heavy dews which collect during the nights. I also find that many varieties do well in partial shade, producing fully as good flowers as they do in the hot sun, especially for exhibition purposes. Dahlias will grow and do equally well in any kind of soil. I have sand, gravel, heavy and light loam, low land and hills, and find very little difference, as far as the number of flowers is concerned, the only difference being that in sand and gravel they form a short, sturdy, compact plant, and in heavy loam and low land they grow tall and rank, blossoming about a week later than those planted at the same time in sandy soil. Preparation The soil should be thoroughly cultivated; ploughed or spaded 8 to 10 inches deep, well pulverized and thoroughly worked over, thus affording an opportunity for rapid expansion, and making an easy path for the tiny rootlets. To secure exceptional results, have your soil ploughed or spaded in the Fall or as early as practicable in the Spring then just before planting have soil thoroughly ploughed or spaded again. Fertilizer. Fertilization is one of the most important factors, to be successful with Dahlias. We all know that a growing plant, the Dahlia for instance, requires and takes from the soil certain properties; and in order to keep the soil in correct proportion, the materials the Dahlia takes from the soil must be restored. This must be done by fertilization. You can use dressing (either horse, cow, sheep or hen), or chemicals, or any commercial fertilizer rich in nitrogen, potash and phosphoric acid. Fish and potash, acid phosphate in the form of bone flour, or sulphate of potash, are also very effective. My system of fertilization every other Fall I give my land a top-dressing of stable manure, ploughing under and alternate with lime, using this as a top-dressing.
