En la memoria intervienen varios procesos mentales que se relacionan entre sí, como por ejemplo la percepción, la atención, la imaginación y el pensamiento. La memoria es imprescindible para el ser humano. Gracias a ella recordamos todas nuestras experiencias pasadas y a las personas que vamos conociendo. Además qué pasaría si todos los días se nos olvidase lo aprendido: tendríamos que aprender cada mañana cómo lavarnos los dientes, cómo usar los cubiertos... incluso cómo hablar y caminar. De nada nos serviría aprender. Históricamente, se ha dicho de la memoria que podía obstaculizar el desarrollo de la inteligencia. Actualmente esa idea se considera absurda y la memoria ha recobrado su lugar con respecto a la inteligencia: es la base del pensamiento y de la inteligencia; por lo tanto la base del aprendizaje. Por otra parte, es cierto que no debemos “abusar” de ella, tiene su “manual de uso”. Por ejemplo si al aprender o memorizar algo nuevo lo relacionamos con lo que ya sabemos, lo recordaremos mejor. También los “trucos nemotécnicos” nos pueden ayudar a memorizar.

Es, en la mayoría de las ocasiones, un acto consciente, es decir decidimos focalizar toda nuestra atención en algo y lo hacemos además de forma activa. Para lograr una concentración voluntaria debemos actuar en dos direcciones: -Eliminando los factores que pueden convertirse en fuente de distracción. -Aprovechando al máximo todo lo que nos permita concentrarnos con facilidad. Significa elegir libremente el objeto de nuestra atención, lo que supone un esfuerzo suplementario porque exige la atracción de otros estímulos. Cuando existe una ruptura entre el objeto de nuestra concentración y nuestra mente, se produce una interferencia de elementos extraños que nos impiden comprender y asimilar lo que originariamente era objeto de nuestra atención.

Todo este “bombardeo” de información nos sobrepasaría si no fuésemos capaces de aislarnos de lo que nos interesa y centrar nuestra atención en lo que es importante para nuestra vida en un momento concreto. Existen dos formas de atención: -Atención espontánea: se origina al quedarnos sorprendidos ante un hecho determinado y no requiere esfuerzo consciente. Es la que más frecuentemente se da. -Atención voluntaria: exige disciplina. Es una actitud consciente que consiste en focalizar la mente únicamente en un objeto haciendo desaparecer los demás de nuestra conciencia. Esta atención voluntaria puede y debe educarse ya que el desarrollo de la inteligencia es proporcional al de la atención.
