Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The issue of the politics of criminology is a significant theme in academic debate, policy implementation, and legal reform. Against administrative criminologists who have been criticized as "technicians of the State" or "apologists for criminal justice," functioning primarily to "manage" the consequences and conflict of structural inequalities in advanced democratic states, this book brings policy back to what it was, a sociological study of the entire social framework of the inequalities of power, wealth, and authority, which is the result of class relations of industrial society. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abolitionism is not only a strategy or a set of demands, aimed at the reduction (or suppression) of custody, it is also a perspective, a philosophy, an approach which challenges conventional definitions of crime. This book examines the origin, philosophy and achievements of abolitionism and reviews the literature on penal abolitionism from the 1960s to the 1980s. By collecting and discussing the key abolitionist arguments, the author critically analyzes the views expressed by its leading proponents; Nils Christie, Louk Hulsman, Thomas Mathiesen and Herman Bianchi, examining in particular how their views took shape, their philosophical foundations, and the social and political context of abolitionist ideas and perspectives. Policies, such as the virtual abolition of custody for young offenders in Italy, are presented and the area of informal justice is also addressed, with an overview of mediation and compensation practices, and an assessment of the degree of their effectiveness and desirability. Through assessment of these achievements and experiments of specific abolitionist ideas, the author attempts to identify the legacy of abolitionism from a European perspective, while bringing into focus more recent contributions concerning the study of terrorism and war.

Book excerpt: In the international penitentiary world, the Dutch prison system has long been seen as a shining example. In the last decades, however, prison provisions were demolished rapidly. In 30 years, the prison rate increased fivefold which is, in relative numbers, comparable to the growth in the United States. This increase in numbers came together with substantial changes to typical aspects of the Dutch prison system - the legal position of detainees, rehabilitation efforts, and medical care. This volume presents an overview of these changes in different sectors of the prison system including adults, youth, the mentally disturbed, alien detainees, and persistent offenders. The book provides insight from both inside as well as outside the system and presents an international perspective as well.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How can the examination of action groups, such as the one discussed in this book, help to initiate a discussion of environmental conflicts as societal conflicts? In this work, which is an ethnographic study of a protest born in Istanbul during the late 1990s, the author suggests that the peculiarities of a protest-group should be viewed as social, political and cultural rather than issue-specific. The book offers a close ethnographic examination of the protest, studying it as a product of the particular character of Turkish public life. It illustrates the particular character of the protest itself as a product of the identities evolving, the activities taking place and the community that these have created amidst the struggle. It is a contribution to the anthropology of collective action and brings together recent studies of the anthropology of social movements, environmentalism and urban settings, with wider literature on social movements, civil society and urban studies and anthropological and sociological studies on Turkey.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The concept of critical criminology – that crime and the present day processes of criminalization are rooted in the core structures of society – is of more relevance today than it has been at any other time. Written by an internationally renowned scholar, Contemporary Critical Criminology introduces the most up-to-date empirical, theoretical, and political contributions made by critical criminologists around the world. In its exploration of this material, the book also challenges the erroneous but widely held notion that the critical criminological project is restricted to mechanically applying theories to substantive topics, or to simple calling for radical political, economic, cultural, and social transformations. This book is an essential source of reference for both undergraduate and postgraduate students of Criminology, Criminal Theory, Social Policy, Research Methodology, and Penology.
