Book excerpt: Perhaps the title of this conference "Ctystalline Electric Field and Structural Effects in f-Electron Systems" reflects best the growth and direction of the field. The title and the conference itself go beyond "CEF" in two broad and important respects. First, the inter-relations between CEF and mode softenings, distortions due to quadruplar ordering or the Jahn Teller effect, have gained greater focus, hence the inclusion of . •• "Structral Effects. " Second, much greater emphasis on the actinides and, in particular, comparisons between actinides and the lighter rare earths is seen in this conference, hence the more general terminology . . . Iff-Electron Systems. " It seems clear that this comparison will lead to an extension to the actinides of mixed valence and Kondo considerations, as well as CEF effects. The emergence of a broader discipline which includes all f-electron systems and which is concerned with unstable, as well as stable, valence reflects the maturation of the field and a coming to grips with the complexity, as well as the unity, of f-electron systems. This maturation is also seen in the growing realization of the effects of CEF on transport, thermodynamic properties, and superconductivity and its co-existence with magnetic order. This volume contains 63 articles, all but two of which were presented at the Conference held in Philadelphia, U. S. A. , on 12-15 November, 1979. About 100 conferees from 13 countries attended the meeting which consisted of four full days of lecture presentations.

Book excerpt: Modern Problems in Condensed Matter Sciences, Volume 22.1: Spin Waves and Magnetic Excitations, Part I focuses on the principles, methodologies, approaches, and reactions involved in spin waves and magnetic excitations, including, Brillouin-Mandelstam light scattering, optical magnetic excitations, and magnetic dielectrics. The selection first elaborates on spin waves in magnetic dielectrics current status of the theory and light scattering from spin waves. Discussions focus on magneto-optic effects and the mechanism of light scattering in magnets, Brillouin-Mandelstam light scattering, Raman scattering, Collinear Heisenberg ferromagnet, low-temperature phase transitions, and low-dimensional systems. The text then ponders on optical magnetic excitations, spin waves above the threshold of parametric excitations, and theory of spin excitations in rare earth systems. Topics include Hamiltonian for rare earth systems, parametric instability of spin waves in magnetic dielectrics, nonstationary processes in parametric excitation of spin waves, radiative decay of magnetic excitons, and mechanism of the generation of magnetic excitations by light. The book tackles 4f moments and their interaction with conduction electrons and neutron scattering studies of magnetic excitations in itinerant magnets, including magnetic excitations at finite and low temperatures, paramagnetic scattering, coupling to conduction electrons, and virtual magnetic excitations. The selection is highly recommended for researchers wanting to study spin waves and magnetic excitations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is the proceedings of the Tsukuba Institute '87 on Fermi Surface Effects, which was held August 27-29, 1987, at Tsukuba Science City in Japan. The topic of the Institute, Fermi surface effects, is one of the fascinating subjects of solid-state physics. It has been known since Sommerfeld's work that the conduction electrons of metals constitute a degenerate Fermi system, and it has also been recognized that the occu pation number of the electron states has a discontinuity across the Fermi surface. Several basic properties of metal electrons stem from this fact. Furthermore, it gives rise to a singular response of the metal electrons to local and dynamical perturbations of low frequency. Such singular behav ior of the metal electrons is called a Fermi surface effect. In his opening address, printed as the Foreword, Professor R. Kubo described Fermi sur face effects as due to "wild" behavior of the metal electrons. The Institute co~sisted of five invited lectures, each of which was two hours long and dealt with theoretical aspects of a subject related to Fermi surface effects. Each lecturer is an expert in the field, and gave an in tensive treatment of his own subject. The experiment of inviting only very few lecturers and allotting them ample time for both presentation and discussion seems to have been successful. This Institute, which was sponsored by the Japan Industrial Technology Association, will probably be followed by other institutes, forming a series.

Book excerpt: This volume contains the proceedings of the Eighth Taniguchi Interna tional Symposium on the Theory of Condensed Matter, which was held at Shima Kanko Hotel in Shima, Japan, 10-13 April 1985. The topic of the Symposium was Valence Fluctuation and Heavy Fermion Systems, one of the most fundamental problems in present-day condensed matter physics. The dilute Kondo problem, which is one of the most typical and unique many-body problems in condensed matter physics, developed recently into the dense Kondo and the coherent Kondo lattice problems in the 4f elec tron systems. It is accepted now that a large degeneracy in f-electron systems makes this latter situation possible by enhancing the single-site Kondo state relative to the inter-site magnetic interactions. Now, anoma lous behavior in f-electron systems show rich variety and are called valence fluctuation phenomena as a whole. They have, however, a common fea ture. In the lowest temperature region, they show either heavy Fermion like character or a narrow gap formation at the Fermi energy. Discovery of superconductivity in the heavy Fermion systems is attracting more in terest. Anyway, the valence fluctuating states are thought to be of fun damental importance to bridge the gap between the localized magnetic states and the delocalized nownagnetic states.

Book excerpt: Anomalous Rare Earths and Actinides: Valence Fluctuation and Heavy Fermions focuses on the characteristics, reactions, transformations, technologies, and processes involved in the study of anomalous rare earths and actinides. The selection first offers information on lanthanides and actinides and electronic structures in cerium monopnictides. Topics include rare earth metals with fluctuating valencies, 'normal' rare earth metals, and band calculation and Fermi surface. The text then elaborates on neutron scattering studies of anomalous rare earth compounds, including magnetic neutron scattering measurements, stability and localization of magnetic moments, and condensed state. The manuscript examines the transport properties of cerium monochalcogenides and pressure-volume relationships of cerium monochalcogenides and monopnictides. The text also ponders on the theory of anisotropic magnetic behavior in hybridizing actinide systems; band hybridization effects on indirect magnetic coupling of localized moments; and neutron scattering from transuranium materials. The selection is a dependable reference for readers interested in the research on anomalous rare earths and actinides.

Book excerpt: The understanding of electronic behaviour in solids when (some of) the valence electrons have both localized and band-like characteristics is one of the central problems of physics and chemistry in the second half of this century. Many advances have indeed been made using highly sophisticated techniques and concepts. Our objectives in bringing together specialists from different areas was cross-fertilization of ideas and redefinition of bottlenecks and problems. The testimony of the participants and the book which follows indicate a fair degree of success. This book is a record of discussions aimed at digestion and reassessment of some of the recent major advances in our understanding of narrow bands. Note that we expressly asked participants to give a short readable account of the major problems in their field and not to emphasize their latest results to be as "technical" as they might be in a normal scientific article. We did not ask for complete reviews of what was going on in the field and this book should not be read as such. Neither should it be approached as the sort of educational text which the NATO ASI proceedings are supposed to be. We have tried to produce a useable account of a workshop in which an attempt was made to define real problems and to distinguish them from illusory problems.

Book excerpt: The Hiroshima Workshop on Transport and Thermal Properties of f-Electron Systems, T2PfS, was held in the hotel Greenpia Yasuura on the shores of the Seto Inland Sea near Hiroshima, Japan from August 30, to September 2, 1992, as a satellite meeting of the International Conference of Strongly Correlated Electron Systems in Sendai. The purpose of this workshop was to bring together those scientists who are actively involved in the research of 4f- and 5f-electron systems; particularly the transport and thermal properties such as electrical resistivity, Hall effect, thermoelectric power, thermal conductivity, thermal expansion and specific heat. Hence, the organizing committee limited the number of participants to 60; 25 from abroad and 35 from Japan. In the workshop, all the sessions consisted of oral presentations; 25 invited talks and 5 contributed talks, including at least 10 minutes of discussion for each presentation. The program was divided into the following five topics: [1] Kondo-lattice semiconductors, [2] superconductivity of f-electron systems, [3] anomalous transport and thermal properties of 4f- and 5f-compounds, [4] low-carrier heavy-electron systems and [5] theoretical investigation of heavy-electron and mixed-valence states. This division of topics has been retained in the organization of papers in this volume. Almost all of the invited and contributed papers are included. These papers include excellent reviews of both the recent advances and historical background of each topic. We believe this book would be a tutorial text for researchers working in the field of solid state physics.

Book excerpt: During the Koln meeting (August 28-31, 1984), Irdia was chosen as the venue for the next International Conference on Valence Fluctuations. lhis was in recognition ard appreciation of the work done, both experimental ard theoretical, by the Irdian scientists in this area during the last decade. We decided to hold this Conference in the month of January, 1987 at Bangalore. lhe subject of Valence Fluctuations has kept itself alive ard active as it has provided many shocks ard suprises particularly among the Ce- ard U-based intermetallies. lhe richness of many interesting physical phenomena occurring in mixed valent materials, the flexibility of modifying their physical properties (by alloying, for example) ard the possibility of synthesizing a wide variety of new such materials seem to be the key factors in this regard. Barely six months before this Conference, an International Conference on Anomalous Rare Earths and Actinides (ICAREA) had been held at Grenoble (July, 1986) which also focussed on mixed valence ard heavy fermion phenomena. In spite of this, the response to this' Conference was very enthusiastic and encouraging. Many interesting ard important results were presented at this Conference which have been included in this volume.

Book excerpt: The last decade has seen a rapid development and growing importance in the application of nuclear physics methods to material sciences. It is a general desire to understand modern material problems on a microscopic scale, which, due to their inherent microscopic nature, made nuclear techniques highly suitable tools for basic and applied research in this field. The Advanced Study Institute on "Nuclear Physics Applications on Ma terials Science" brought together scientists active in different but closely re lated fields to review and discuss selected topics of bulk properties of metals, semiconductors and insulators as well as properties of surfaces, interfaces and thin films. Most of the excellent lectures and oral presentations of the School are collected in part I of the present volume, while extended abstracts of scientific work presented as posters are added in part II. The pleasant site of the ASI at Viana do Castelo and the northern province of Portugal, Alto Minho, provided the stimulating atmosphere for an in spiring School. Many people contributed to the scientific and social success of the institute. Thanks are especially due to the members of the local organizing committee, N. Ayres de Campos, M. Fernanda da Silva, A. Pedroso de Lima and my co-director J. Carvalho Soares. His permanent involvement in preparing and realization of the ASI was essential for this memorable School.
