Book excerpt: The first technical report for the period 1 Jan. 1993 till 31 Dec. 1993 for the research entitled, 'Direct observation of crystal growth from solution using Optical Investigation of a growing crystal Face' is presented. The work on the project did not start till 1 June 1993 due to the non-availability of the required personnel. The progress of the work during the period 1 June 1993 till the end of 1993 is described. Significant progress was made for testing various optical diagnostic techniques for monitoring crystal solution. Some of the techniques that are being tested are: heterodyne detection technique, in which changes in phase are measured as a interferometric function of time/crystal growth; a conventional technique, in which a fringe brightness is measured as a function of crystal growth/time; and a Mach-Zehnder interferometric technique in which a fringe brightness is measured as a function of time to obtain information on concentration changes. During the second year it will be decided to incorporate the best interferometric technique along with the ellipsometric technique, to obtain real time in-situ growth rate measurements. A laboratory mock-up of the first two techniques were made and tested. Lal, Ravindra NASA-CR-195141, NAS 1.26:195141 NAG3-1429...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Schlieren and shadowgraph techniques are basic and valuable tools in various scientific and engineering disciplines. They allow us to see the invisible: the optical inhomogeneities in transparent media like air, water, and glass that otherwise cause only ghostly distortions of our normal vision. These techniques are discussed briefly in many books and papers, but there is no up-to-date complete treatment of the subject before now. The book is intended as a practical guide for those who want to use these methods, as well as a resource for a broad range of disciplines where scientific visualization is important. The colorful 400-year history of these methods is covered in an extensive introductory chapter accessible to all readers.

Book excerpt: Space science in China is one of the most active areas in modern science, and China has played a dynamic and steadily increasing role in this field since the 1960s. Until recently, however, activity in China was a mystery to the rest of the world. With the commercial importance of space, and the fact that space is now used as a laboratory to carry out various experiments, China has recently emerged as an important international competitor. Space Science in China provides a clear understanding of the latest research and progress in such wide-ranging areas as the development and research in solar-terrestrial science, space astronomy, geoscience, remote sensing, microgravity science, and life science.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Crystal growth is the process by which crystals are formed from a liquid or gas. This phenomenon occurs naturally in geological processes, but it can also be induced in the laboratory. The growth of crystals is influenced by various factors, such as temperature, pressure, and chemical composition of the solution. The crystal growth process is of great interest to scientists and engineers, as it has important applications in various fields, such as materials science, electronics, and medicine. Optical properties of crystals are also an area of interest for scientists and engineers. The term "optical properties" refers to how a crystal interacts with light. This includes its ability to absorb, transmit, reflect, and refract light. The study of optical properties is essential in the development of advanced materials for applications in photonics, solar cells, and sensors. In summary, crystal growth and optical properties are important areas of research in materials science and engineering. The growth of crystals can be controlled to produce materials with specific properties, and the study of optical properties can provide valuable information about a crystal's structure and defects. By investigating these two areas together, can develop advanced materials with tailored optical properties for a wide range of applications.
