Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The HIV/AIDS epidemic in Africa has defined the childhoods of an entire generation. Over the past twenty years, international NGOs and charities have devoted immense attention to the millions of African children orphaned by the disease. But in Crying for Our Elders, anthropologist Kristen E. Cheney argues that these humanitarian groups have misread the ‘orphan crisis’. She explains how the global humanitarian focus on orphanhood often elides the social and political circumstances that actually present the greatest adversity to vulnerable children—in effect deepening the crisis and thereby affecting children’s lives as irrevocably as HIV/AIDS itself. Through ethnographic fieldwork and collaborative research with children in Uganda, Cheney traces how the “best interest” principle that governs children’s’ rights can stigmatize orphans and leave children in the post-antiretroviral era even more vulnerable to exploitation. She details the dramatic effects this has on traditional family support and child protection and stresses child empowerment over pity. Crying for Our Elders advances current discussions on humanitarianism, children’s studies, orphanhood, and kinship. By exploring the unique experience of AIDS orphanhood through the eyes of children, caregivers, and policymakers, Cheney shows that despite the extreme challenges of growing up in the era of HIV/AIDS, the post-ARV generation still holds out hope for the future.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the wake of the AIDS pandemic, legions of organizations and compassionate individuals from faraway places descended on Africa to offer help and save lives. Ann Swidler and Susan Cotts Watkins vividly describe the often mismatched expectations and fantasies of altruists who dream of transforming lives, of the villagers who desperately seek help, and of the brokers on whom both Western altruists and impoverished villagers must rely. Based on years of fieldwork in the heavily AIDS-affected country of Malawi, this incisive, irreverent book digs into the sprawling AIDS enterprise and unravels the paradoxes of policy and practice. All who want to do good—from idealistic volunteers to world-weary development professionals—depend on brokers as guides, fixers, and cultural translators. The mutual misunderstandings among these players create all the drama of a romance: longing, exhilaration, disappointment, heartache, and sometimes an enduring connection. A Fraught Embrace unveils the tangled relations of those involved in the collective struggle to contain an epidemic.

This book will shed light on the spirituality of generations past as well as the light that is being called forth for future generations." She was not sleeping well. Dreams, headaches followed, the nightmares started, Night terrors which were terrifying for the both of us... then the loss of weight; I took her to a Dr. he suggested medication, which did not help. The nightmares became worse. Every night she went to bed, she would dream...she would wake up screaming, terrified every night for several weeks. Imagine a child any child going through this. I was beside myself not knowing what to do. Her headaches were getting worse, and her weight loss was worrying me. I did the only thing I knew to do; I prayed to God to help us. I was scared for my daughter, and I did not know how to stop this. I also did the second thing I knew to do; I took her to the doctor again. I told him about her nightmares, and he looked at me like I was a crazy person and asked me what I thought those nightmares were going to do to her, harm her? I said yes they already were. I was afraid for my daughter; I was afraid the nightmares were going to destroy her. He laughed. I lost all control. I could not help her, so I was putting her in someone else's hand who is supposed to help her, someone who is supposed to be a healer. He was more concerned with her weight loss and headaches and put her in the hospital for further testing. I met a mother whose daughter shared the room with my daughter. They asked me questions about my daughter, about her dreams, so I proceeded to tell them the story. The daughter kept looking at her mother, then asked her if she should tell me, only to hear her mother reply no. The mother asked me what I thought would happen if my daughter opened the door? I did not hesitate. I knew if my daughter opened the door to the man in black my daughter would die.... This broke my heart because I felt so alone with all of this, and I had no way to prevent it. How could I help my daughter? I had prayed and asked God to help me, and I knew he was the only one who could help me for this was way out of my league. The young women looked at her mother and said mom we have to tell her. Finally, I yelled, tell me what? If you have something to tell me that will help my child, PLEASE TELL ME! I was desperate and somewhere inside I knew my answer was sitting right here before my very eyes.... Find out how Kathy helped her daughter and many others with her gifts from Spirit.

Book excerpt: For some, the ability to cry when in emotional pain has been purposely forgotten. This is a practical step-step guide that when used correctly will bring about crying. Also contained within are personal insights the author shares that were invaluable in unlocking the necessary human elements needed to accept one’s vulnerability and let go into the tears. As a boy Shane decided he would no longer cry for fear of appearing vulnerable. As he grew into manhood always searching for richer experiences, he realized that crying was a healthy way to release pain. Unfortunately, he’d forgotten how and so whenever the need arose, anxiety took its place. Later in life after a series of events took their toll, he gained the courage to let go of his youthful decision and purposely sought a means to induce the tears. This book marks the success of that search and of a notion that perhaps others were in need of a way back to the path of crying. Now the act of crying cannot simply be awakened if it has been asleep for a long time, key lessons in life have to be learned. These lessons came from Shane’s search for inner peace which has led him down many paths such as the Martial Arts, a trip to India, Kundalini Meditation, Diamond Way Buddhist meditation, Acting, and Reiki, all under the guise of Software Engineer. These personal insights are noted to help the reader accept themselves and embrace their humanity thus giving them courage to let go. Shane is currently living in the San Francisco Bay Area. His journey continues!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is it possible to ever truly escape one’s past? For thirteen-year-old Matthew and his girlfriend Melissa, who are finally free from the dominance of a repressive religious cult, the Philadelphia Brethren, the answer seems to be no. Even though they are now members of loving adoptive families, the teens still have to deal with some troublesome lingering issues from their past lives. Melissa harbours a deep resentment towards her fanatically religious former parents for depriving her of a happy and carefree childhood. They had subjected her to years of mental and physical abuse, social isolation, and denial of personal freedoms. Matthew struggles with anxious thoughts about the safety of his loved ones and is having frightful nightmares about his demented ex-stepmother Vivian. To make matters worse, their otherwise idyllic 1960s Saskatchewan community is put on edge following attempts on both Melissa’s life and another innocent young person. Matthew’s graphic nightmares begin to overwhelm him as they resurrect painful memories of his troubled past, a past that he is desperately trying to forget. Matthew also believes that a few of those nightmares could actually be real-life excursions into horrific alternate realities where the familiar concepts of time and space become disjointed and incomprehensible. Menace From the Past is the fifth book in the Threefold Cord series that follows the story of the adopted sons in the Adamson family who are all religious cult “refugees” and it is the first in the series to be narrated by Matthew. A bonus supplement is also featured, Camp Purgatory, where Matthew recounts the last few weeks of his former life in the Philadelphia Brethren church when he and his best friend Danny were subjected to intensive religious indoctrination at a summer youth camp.
