Book excerpt: Desperate times call for desperate measures. Farm raised shrimp from Asia have driven the prices of wild caught shrimp down. Three bad winters followed by hot and dry summers have decimated the wild population. Now the Department of Natural Resources has closed the season to give the wild population time to recover. For the last three years Jack has gotten by on a meager catch and savings, but now the savings are gone. When his friend and fellow shrimper, captain Barns, suggest that they go to the southern Caribbean and work the international waters off Venezuela, he turns him down. "To many crazy people with guns, and no law. Between the Cubans, the drug runners, and plain old pirates out of Jamaica and Haiti that place is a war zone." Now, faced with losing everything he and his wife have built, and unable to support his family, he agrees. This begins a voyage into hell that is sold as paradise in the tourist brochures and cruise ship advertisements. As they move further south Jack realizes that one misstep and you lose everything. A man will do anything necessary to protect and support his family and way of life, even murder.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In May 1946 John Caldwell set out to sail from Panama to Sydney to reunite with his wife who he hadn't seen for more than a year. Eager to reach his destination and unable to secure any other form of transport, he had to resort to singlehanded seamanship. After an ignominious scene in the harbor, where a tangled anchor led him to take an early dip, he spent ten days learning the rudiments of navigation and sailing from a book, before embarking on the 9,000 mile journey aboard the 20-foot Pagan. Ahead lay a mission that was to reveal in him elements not only of astounding courage and determination, but also of incredible foolhardiness. Within 500 miles of Panama John Caldwell had already been shipwrecked once and had his boat's engine and cockpit destroyed by an angry shark. Indefatigable, he decided to press on towards his goal.He endured the terrors and discomforts of life on the high seas and enjoyed the triumphs of fighting and winning against the elements. This is more than an exciting tale of sea-adventure. It is as compelling and unpredictable as a thriller. It is the story, witty and moving, of a man, motivated initially by love, and ultimately by his own fierce determination to survive.

Book excerpt: Stalingrad is often described as the turning point of the German war with the Soviet Union, or perhaps even the entire European war. This paper argues that the actual turning point was probably earlier in the Barbarossa campaign, and that the decision to hold Stalingrad, while a serious mistake, followed several other strategic blunders of Adolf Hitler. Given that, this essay reflects a study of primary source material collected from key German commanders, as well as numerous documents collected in 1956 as part of the “Karlsruhe Collection.” The focus was to determine where the airlift failed, why it failed, and what could have been done better. Ultimately the failure could be attributed to the lack of a survivable and more capable transport aircraft, difficulties operating out of poorly prepared airfields which were under constant threat from the Red Army, the absolutely miserable weather which frequently prevented any flying at all, enemy action which prevented daylight flights by much of the fleet, supplies which were not ideally suited for airlift, and finally difficulties organizing the airlift at both ends. Many commanders involved knew it was bound to fail and warned Hitler and Paulus, to no avail. In the end, what could have been a tremendous feat ended as tragic folly.

Book excerpt: Camila has spent the last ten years trying to leave her dark past behind…but when Alex turns up on her doorstep, she’s forced to face the one person she couldn’t forget. Growing up on the tough streets of the city taught Cam a few things, especially about love. Don’t listen to your heart, because it will always let you down. Listen to your head instead. She’s lived by that motto as a detective with the Aspen Falls police department. Cool-headed and calm, she’s solved plenty of cases through sheer grit and determination. But when Alex, a ghost from her past, shows up in her home, her resolve falters. He’s clearly on the run and up to no good, but there’s just one problem. She loved him once…and her head can’t convince her heart that anything has changed. Especially when she realizes just how much trouble he’s in. The last thing Alex wants to do is put Cam in danger. The woman he loved years ago, the woman he purposely left behind, deserves better. But fate has other plans. Injured and alone, he shows up on her doorstep, knowing exactly what he needs: a safe place to stay and a plan to get out from under the myriad of people who want him dead. But he knows something else, too. His feelings for Cam never changed. And showing up at her door could be the worst thing he’s ever done. Because, this time, he might lose her forever. If you like gritty, heart-wrenching romantic suspense then you’ll love this new Aspen Falls Novel.

Book excerpt: Ed Renehan's Desperate Voyage, the retelling of Donald Crowhurst's tragic voyage during the 1968/69 Golden Globe Race, is a finely honed account of what has become offshore sailing's most enduring story. Drawing on an array of sources, Renehan's Crowhurst is Shakespearean: narcissistic and reviled but also sympathetic, a flawed human consumed by ambition. Although I've known this story forever, Renehan's fresh, haunting narrative had me hoping for a new ending, a better outcome this time around. Alas, it's not to be, you just keep reading until it breaks your heart. - John Kretschmer, author of Sailing a Serious Ocean, At the Mercy of the Sea, Flirting with Mermaids, and Cape Horn to Starboard The first non-stop single-handed race around the world in 1968 was a cauldron of huge personalities and epic sea tales. Ironically, it was the complete failure of Donald Crowhurst that has garnered the most passion and interest. Few stories equal the modern Greek tragedy that is Crowhurst's, exposed like a raw nerve to those who loved and supported him when his Teignmouth Electronwas found abandoned in the Atlantic, along with dual logbooks that revealed Crowhurst's spectacular hoax and probable suicide. Edward Renehan's able and concise recounting of the story is not the first, nor will it be the last because the tale is the quintessential cautionary tale filled with characters, dreams, and dilemmas with which we are all familiar. Desperate Voyage provides readers precious insights through concentration on the backstory and how Crowhurst's basic personality drove him inexorably towards disaster, and like a dangerous vortex, dragged his family, friends, and supporters into his sphere. Throughout Renehan's clever telling, and because I have spent some time alone and tested at sea myself, I could not help but recognize the conditions that try sailors' souls, but also people I know from every walk of life and the troubles into which they have gotten themselves. For the first time, I even could see my relationship to Crowhurst, how I, too, have shaped and been shaped by the strains of life and thwarted goals. Simply fascinating. - Steven Callahan, New York Times bestselling author of Adrift Edward Renehan’s Desperate Voyage is incisive, haunting, and absorbing. For those, like me, initially unfamiliar with this great sea drama, it is a perfect introduction to the story of Donald Crowhurst and the Golden Globe Race of 1968. Crowhurst is flawed and complicated, a tragic and captivating figure, and Renehan’s retelling, Shakespearean in scope, is wonderfully crafted and endlessly fascinating. - William Boyle, author of the critically-acclaimed Gravesend and Death Don’t Have No Mercy On a dismal day at the end of October, 1968, a weekend sailor by the name of Donald Crowhurst set out from England in a flimsy trimaran, hoping to win the LondonSunday Times "Golden Globe" race and become the first solo sailor to circumnavigate the world non-stop. His was an exercise in over-arching ambition, delusion, and tragedy such as the world has seldom seen. Before it was over, the world media would be subject to a fraud of enormous proportions, and Crowhurst would die a madman in the middle of the Atlantic. What he left behind was a shattered boat, a shattered family, and this incredible story.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A stupendous feat of reportage." -Ron Powers, cowriter of Flags of Our Fathers Praise for Desperate Hours "Goldstein's book is packed with detail. . . . This description of the Doria's sinking is especially moving." -The New York Times "A stupendous feat of reportage. Goldstein has virtually put us into lifeboats and sent us hurtling into the North Atlantic on the night of July 25, 1956." -Ron Powers, cowriter, Flags of Our Fathers, and author of Dangerous Water and Tom and Huck Don't Live Here Anymore On an extraordinary summer's night in 1956, in a fog off Nantucket, the world-renowned ocean liner Andrea Doria collided with the Swedish liner Stockholm and, eleven hours later, tragically sank. But in that brief time the Doria became, after the Titanic, the most storied vessel of the century, as nearly 1,700 people were saved in an unforgettable rescue punctuated by countless acts of heroism amid confusion, terror, and even cowardice. In the tradition of Walter Lord's A Night To Remember, Desperate Hours re-creates the ill-fated voyage, from the passengers' parting waves at Genoa, to their last evening highball in the Doria's lavish lounge, to the unbelievable realization that catastrophe was imminent. Richard Goldstein draws from dozens of interviews, court documents, memoirs, and reports that relate never-before-told stories. He also presents technical findings that shed light on the blame for the disaster. The result is a definitive history of a fateful day, a legendary liner, and a deadly shipwreck now considered by scuba divers to be the Mount Everest of the deep.
