Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Returning to his native Chicago after World War II, Nelson Algren found a city transformed. The flourishing industry, culture, and literature that had placed prewar Chicago at center stage in American life were entering a time of crisis. The middle class and economic opportunity were leaving the inner city, and Black Southerners arriving in Chicago found themselves increasingly estranged from the nation's economic and cultural resources. For Algren, Chicago was becoming "an October sort of city even in the spring," and as Carlo Rotella demonstrates, this metaphorical landscape of fall led Algren and others to forge a literary form that traced the American city's transformation. Narratives of decline, like the complementary narratives of black migration and inner-city life written by Claude Brown and Gwendolyn Brooks, became building blocks of the postindustrial urban literature. October Cities examines these narratives as they played out in Chicago, Philadelphia, and Manhattan. Through the work of Algren, Brown, Brooks, and other urban writers, Rotella explores the relationship of this new literature to the cities it draws upon for inspiration. The stories told are of neighborhoods and families molded by dramatic urban transformation on a grand scale with vast movements of capital and people, racial succession, and an intensely changing urban landscape.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The physicians’ oath ‘Do no harm’ is attributed to the ancient Greek physician Hippocrates, but it isn’t a part of the Hippocratic Oath. It is actually from another of his works Of the Epidemics. Hippocrates’ Of the Epidemics says: The physician must be able to tell the antecedents, know the present, and foretell the future — have two special objects in view with regard to disease, namely, to do good or to do no harm. In this work, Hippocrates acts as a prognosticator, raising concerns about not just one malady and one patient, but encompassing the past, present and future of many patients and the maladies they might face. Following this rationale, this book, When Doctors Finally Said No, came to be. Although fiction, these true, medically related stories weave together a movement that is building barriers between doctors and their patients by using criteria based on outcomes instead of efforts. The oath, once the bedrock of this still unpredictable science has now become its Achilles heel. Many of those in the federal government, the insurers, the hospital corporations and the bottom-feeders from the legal community feel they can legislate, regulate, administrate and litigate without real concern what harm might come from their actions, because doctors pledged to do no harm. Hippocrates’ pronouncements laid out an additional duty for doctors beside do no harm and that is doing nothing. When Doctors Finally Said No is the gripping story of the intrusions into the practice of medicine by the payers, the government, and the large hospital corporations that force physicians into a battle they never anticipated.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a new way of thinking about, teaching, learning, and practicing real estate development. Real Estate Development Matrix describes the process in a two-dimensional model and presents seven Development Stages which form the horizontal axis, and eight sets of Development Tasks which form the vertical axis to define a 56-cell matrix. In each cell, money is spent and risks are taken to achieve certain tasks and thereby create (or destroy) value. This holistic process considers the entire life cycle of real estate from its "green field" inception to its "brown field" state. The book is written by a real estate developer and academic, and the presented material is conceptual, practical, and non-technical. Jargon has been minimized as much as possible as the author introduces an entirely new model for real estate development that is both academically authoritative and developed in practice. It is aimed at a general professional audience participating in the development process, but equally the book is ideal for use as a textbook in undergraduate and graduate courses in real estate development, and an excellent supplemental text for business courses discussing real estate finance and investment. It may also be used as a textbook for professional courses, workshops, or seminars in real estate development. The book is supported by an interactive website at http://realestatedevelopmentmatrix.com/

Book excerpt: When it opened in 1927, Sears Crosstown, now Crosstown Concourse, was the southeastern regional warehouse and distribution center for the Sears Catalogue mail-order empire. Each day, more than forty-five thousand orders were processed by more than 1,500 workers. As a result, Sears Crosstown became known locally as "the Wish Building." For more than half a century, the iconic building and its surrounding neighborhood flourished until the decline of Sears in the 1980s. For decades, the once dynamic destination for commerce was vacant and shuttered. Then a unique group of Memphians emerged to resurrect Sears Crosstown with a plan most thought was impossible. Bill Haltom, a native Memphian and writer, tells the story of "the Wish Building"--its past, present and future.

Book excerpt: Sixteen-year-old Lucy Szabo is Undead -- at least according to her own theories about vampirism. Lucy believes that the first vampires -- with their pale skin, long teeth, and uncontrollable thirst -- were dying diabetics. And she should know. She's a diabetic herself. When Lucy becomes involved with Draco -- a self-proclaimed "real" vampire she meets in the Transylvania Internet chat room -- her world begins crashing down around her. Caught up in late-night parties and Goth culture, she begins to lose control of her grades, relationships, and health. Lucy realizes she needs to make some important choices, and fast. But it may already be too late.
