Book excerpt: The future success of communication networks hinges on the ability to overcome the mismatch between requested quality of service (QoS) and limited network resources. Spectrum is a natural resource that cannot be replenished and therefore must be used efficiently. On the other hand, energy efficiency (EE) is also becoming increasingly important as battery technology has not kept up with the growing requirements stemming from ubiquitous multimedia applications. The qualities of wireless channels vary with both time and user. We use channel state information (CSI) to dynamically assign wireless resources to users to improve spectral and energy efficiency. We first investigate a series of general treatments of exploiting CSI in a distributed way to control the medium access to maximize spectral efficiency for networks with arbitrary topologies and traffic distributions. As the first step, we propose decentralized optimization for multichannel random access (DOMRA), which uses local CSI and two-hop static neighborhood information to achieve performance comparable with the global optimal channel-aware Aloha. The generic framework developed in DOMRA proved to be very useful in improving cellular networks as well. We develop cochannel interference avoidance (CIA) medium access control (MAC), which is optimized by DOMRA, to mitigate the downlink severe cochannel interference that is usually experienced by cell-edge users. Aloha-based schemes have low channel utilization efficiency because of the collision of entire data frames. We further develop channel-aware distributed MAC (CAD-MAC), which avoids collision through signaling negotiation ahead of data transmission. CAD-MAC completely resolves the contention of networks with arbitrary topologies, achieves throughput close to centralized schedulers, and is robust to any channel uncertainty. Then we address energy-efficient wireless communications while emphasizing orthogonal frequency multiple access (OFDMA) systems. We first discover the global optimal energy-efficient link adaptation in frequency-selective channels using the strict quasiconcavity of energy efficiency functions. This link adaptation optimally balances the power consumption of electronic circuits and that of data transmission on each subchannel. The global optimal energy-efficient transmission can be obtained using iterative operations, which may be complex to be implemented in a practical system. Besides, running iterative algorithms consumes additional energy. Hence, we further develop a closed-form link adaptation scheme, which performs close to the global optimum. Besides, since subchannel allocation in OFDMA systems determines the energy efficiency of all users, we develop closed-form resource allocation approaches that achieve near-optimal performance too. In an interference-free environment, a tradeoff between EE and spectral efficiency (SE) exists, as increasing transmit power always improves SE but not necessarily EE. We continue the investigation in interference-limited scenarios and show that since increased transmit power also brings higher interference to the network, SE is not necessarily higher and the tradeoff is improved. Especially, in interference-dominated regimes, e.g., local area networks, both spectral- and energy-efficient communications desire optimized time-division protocols and the proposed DOMRA, CIA-MAC, and CAD-MAC can be used to improve both spectral and energy efficiency.

Book excerpt: It is our great pleasure to present the proceedings of the Third International Workshop on Multiple Access Communications (MACOM) that was held in Barcelona during September 13–14, 2010. In 1961, Claude Shannon established the foundation for the discipline now known as “multi-user information theory” in his pioneering paper “Two-way Communication Channels,” and later Norman Abramson published his paper “The Aloha System—Another Alternative for Computer Communications” in 1970 which introduced the concept of multiple access using a shared common channel. Thereafter, for more than 40 years of study, numerous elegant theories and algorithms have been developed for multiple-access communications. During the 1980s and 1990s the evolution of multiple-access techniques p- ceeded in conjunction with the evolution of wireless networks. Novel multiple access techniques like code division multiple access (CDMA) and orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) provided increased spectral - ?ciency, dynamicity and ?exibility in radio resource allocation with intrinsic anti-multipath and anti-interference features. In this ?rst decade of the 21st century,multiple-accesstechniques,derivedfromadvancedwirelesstransmission methodologiesbasedonthediversityconcept(e. g. ,MC-CDMA,MIMO-OFDMA and SC-FDMA), opened the road to a renewed idea of multiple access. Today multiple-access communications involve many challenging aspects not only l- ited (like in the past) to physical layer design. Medium access control (MAC) techniques play a crucial role in managing the radio resources that users will exploit to transmit their data streams. Recent developments in software radios and cognitive radios have led to a signi?cant impact also on spectrum m- agement and access paradigms.

Novel, energy-efficient, optical networking technologies and architectures are required to effectively meet the stringent performance requirements with low cost and ultrahigh energy efficiencies. In this thesis, a cross-layer communications platform is proposed to enable greater intelligence and functionality on the physical layer. Providing the optical layer with advanced networking capabilities will facilitate the dynamic management and optimization of optical switching based on performance monitoring measurements and higher-layer attributes. The cross-layer platform aims to create a new framework for networks to incorporate packet-scale measurement subsystems and techniques for monitoring the health of the optical channel. This will allow for quality-of-service- and energy-aware routing schemes, as well as an enhanced awareness of the optical data signals.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Green communication has emerged as one of the most important research topics for radio systems. This leads us to develop an energy-efficient mechanism which adjusts transmission power according to the traffic load and reduces the energy per bit usage. For the vision of Europe 2020 as a smart, sustainable and inclusive economy to become reality, the EU have set forth the 20:20:20 targets by which greenhouse gas emissions and energy reduction of primary use should be reduced by 20% while 20% of energy consumption should come from renewable resources. In fact, in today's energy-conscious society, Information and Communication Technology (ICT) accounts for 2% of the global CO2 emissions. A medium-sized cellular network uses as much energy as 170,000 homes, while the cost of powering the existing BSs accounts for a staggering 50% of a service provider's overall expenses. Therefore, new solutions are required whereby operators can accommodate additional traffic volume whilst reducing their investment in new infrastructure and beyond that significantly reduces their energy bill. Moreover, the EU political agenda, in unison with expected growth in mobile data, has identified cost and energy per bit reduction as a stringent design requirement for mobile networks of the future. Green Communication for 4G Wireless Systems mainly covers energy efficient techniques in physical, MAC and network layers. Cross-layer energy efficiency optimization in time and frequency has been also discussed with two fundamental tradeoffs, energy efficiency and spectral efficiency. This technical introduction to Green Communication in 4G wireless systems, explaining the rather complex standards (3GPP Releases R10 and R11), is a must-read for engineers, decision-makers and students interested in Green Communication, as well as other researchers and scientists from this evolving field.

Book excerpt: Broadcast spectrum is scarce, both in terms of our ability to access existing spectrum and as a result of access rules created by governments. An emerging paradigm called cognitive radio, however, has the potential to allow different systems to dynamically access and opportunistically exploit the same frequency band in an efficient way, thereby allowing broadcasters to use spectrum more efficiently. Cognitive Radio and Interference Management: Technology and Strategy brings together state-of-the-art research results on cognitive radio and interference management from both theoretical and practical perspectives. It serves as a bridge between people who are working to develop theoretical and practical research in cognitive radio and interference management, and therefore facilitate the future development of cognitive radio and its applications.
