Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As in western cinema, cross-dressing is a recurrent theme in Turkish film. But what do these films, whose characters typically cross-dress in order to escape enemies or other threats, tell us about the modern history of the Turkish Republic? This book examines cross-dressing in Turkish films in the context of formative events in modern Turkish political history, arguing that this trope coincides with and is illustrative of trauma induced by Turkey's multiple coup d'etats, periods of authoritarianism, enforced secularism and 'modernization'. Burcu Dabak Ozdemir analyses five case study films wherein she reveals that cross-dressing characters are able to escape persecutors and surveillance - key instruments of oppression during Turkey's coups. She shows how cross-dressing in the films examined become a destabilising force, a form of implicit resistance against state power, both political and in terms of binaries of gender and identity, and a means to register moments of national trauma. The book historicises the concept of cross-dressing in modern Turkey by examining what the author argues is a formative trauma worked through in the films examined: the westernization policies of the Kemalist regime whose most immediate symbolic presence was worn - the enforced adoption of western dress by citizens. Of interest to scholars of gender, queer, film and trauma studies, the book will also appeal to students and scholars of contemporary Turkish culture and society.

Book excerpt: Into the Closet examines the representation of cross-dressing in a wide variety of children’s fiction, ranging from picture books and junior fiction to teen films and novels for young adults. It provides a comprehensive analysis of the different types of cross-dressing found in children’s narratives, raising a number of significant issues relating to the ideological construction of masculinity and femininity in books for younger readers. Many literary and cultural critics have studied the cultural significance of adult cross-dressing, yet although cross-dressing representations are plentiful in children’s literature and film, very little critical attention has been paid to this subject to date. Into the Closet fills this critical gap. Cross-dressing demonstrates how gender is symbolically constructed through various items of clothing and apparel. It also has the ability to deconstruct notions of problematizing the relationship between sex and gender. Into the Closet is an important book for academics, teachers, and parents because it demonstrates how cross-dressing, rather than being taboo, is frequently used in children’s literature and film as a strategy to educate (or enculturate) children about gender.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although cross-dressing is a prominent film element in many Hollywood films (e.g. Some Like it Hot (1959), Victor/Victoria (1982), Tootsie (1982), Mrs. Doubtfire (1993), etc), it is almost absolutely absent from Soviet cinema. One of the very few and most well-known examples is 'Hello, I'm Your Aunt!' (Zdravstvuyte, ya vasha tyotya!)(1975) by V.Titov, a Soviet adaptation of the play by Brandon Thomas Charlie's Aunt. This book provides a close-reading of the film within the Soviet context of the 1970s and in comparison to several mainstream Hollywood comedies based on cross-dressing as the main topic. The analysis is aimed at finding out if and how the film was subversive towards the official Soviet discourse and why it was popular with the audience. The book addresses the questions of masculinity and femininity in the Soviet society of the 1970s, perfomative and carnivalesque aspects of cross-dressing and should be useful for those interested in Gender and Film studies, or whose academic interests include late Soviet society and culture.

Book excerpt: TransAntiquity explores transgender practices, in particular cross-dressing, and their literary and figurative representations in antiquity. It offers a ground-breaking study of cross-dressing, both the social practice and its conceptualization, and its interaction with normative prescriptions on gender and sexuality in the ancient Mediterranean world. Special attention is paid to the reactions of the societies of the time, the impact transgender practices had on individuals’ symbolic and social capital, as well as the reactions of institutionalized power and the juridical systems. The variety of subjects and approaches demonstrates just how complex and widespread "transgender dynamics" were in antiquity.
