This book presents a methodological framework for the analysis of intercultural issues frequently misinterpreted by existing theories. The book uses a challenge-and-response theory of cultural development to examine the relationship between different natural disasters and threats and the developments of ancient civilizations. The spatial interaction of ancient civilizations is assessed and some theoretical patterns of intercultural influences are presented with a focus on the Chinese, Egyptian, Indus, and Mesopotamian civilizations. Using the development of China as a case study, and on the basis of a simplified spatial model, the optimal spatial structure and size of culture areas are mathematically solved, and the political economy implications to the interactions between cultures differing in size are illustrated. The book also examines various aspects of intercultural economic influences, such as those of culture on international trade. The empirical results suggest that high-income trade partners are less sensitive than low-income trade partners to the measures of cultural dissimilarity which block international trade. The existing literature relating to the determinants of economic growth treats explanatory variables such as income inequality and cultural diversity separately. This book investigates whether there are any conditions under which income inequality and cultural diversity could encourage economic growth and provides evidence from a broad panel of nations, which reveals that economic growth is quite independent from the variables of inequality and cultural (linguistic and religious) diversity. Finally, this book provides suggestions for how cultural influences can benefit developing economies both large and small.

Therefore the characterisation of society is very broad. Several authors have tried to define this phenomenon. For instance Foster (1962) defines it very abstract: ‘Culture is the way of life of the group of people’. A More detailed description comes from Ball and McCulloch (1999). In their point of view on culture ‘the sum total of the beliefs, rules, techniques, institutions, and artefacts that characterize human populations’. Dresser and Carns (1969) have a more practical view on this topic, culture: it enables a communication through a common language, allows a calculation of possible response on the action which had taken place, to define what is wrong or right. These different explanations disclose how complex an understanding of a foreign country could be. All the more the volume of international trade illustrates that a high awareness of local specifics is indispensable. Every year goods and services with a value of 11783 billion dollars were traded around the world. Especially Europe, Asia and North America have been responsible for over 90% of the exchanges. Hence, in nearly 60 years the international trade has grown approximately around 200 times (World Trade Organisation, 2007). Furthermore, the relation between trades to GDP ratio increased around 12.7% in all OECD countries between 1992 and 2005. Today an average trade to GDP ratio from 45% for all OECD states shows how essential international commerce is (OECD, 2007). But why is international trade so attractive for companies? They diversify themselves and get more independent from a single market. The next reason is that they get the opportunity to sell more goods and be more profitable, and they benefit from economy of scale and reduces costs. Getting into a new market has the advantage of gaining technological expertise from the local worker. Moreover a production in the target market enables the company to adopt faster new demands and avoid trade barriers against their goods. Thus, it is no wonder that the 500 largest MNEs got annual sales of 14.9 trillion dollars (Rugman, Collinson, 2006).

Book excerpt: The rise of corporate capitalism was a cultural revolution as well as an economic event, according to James Livingston. That revolution resides, he argues, in the fundamental reconstruction of selfhood, or subjectivity, that attends the advent of an 'age of surplus' under corporate auspices. From this standpoint, consumer culture represents a transition to a society in which identities as well as incomes are not necessarily derived from the possession of productive labor or property. From the same standpoint, pragmatism and literary naturalism become ways of accommodating the new forms of solidarity and subjectivity enabled by the emergence of corporate capitalism. So conceived, they become ways of articulating alternatives to modern, possessive individualism. Livingston argues accordingly that the flight from pragmatism led by Lewis Mumford was an attempt to refurbish a romantic version of modern, possessive individualism. This attempt still shapes our reading of pragmatism, Livingston claims, and will continue to do so until we understand that William James was not merely a well-meaning middleman between Charles Peirce and John Dewey and that James's pragmatism was both a working model of postmodern subjectivity and a novel critique of capitalism.
