Book Synopsis Agrarian Change and Urbanization in Southern India by : Seema Purushothaman
Download or read book Agrarian Change and Urbanization in Southern India written by Seema Purushothaman and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-08-28 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book takes readers on a journey through the evolution of agricultural communities in southern India, from their historical roots to the recent global neo-liberal era. It offers insights into a unique combination of themes, with a particular focus on agrarian change and urbanisation, specifically in the state of Karnataka where both aspects are significant and co-exist. Based on case studies from Karnataka in South India, the book presents a regional yet integrated multi-disciplinary framework for analysing the persistence, resilience and future of small farmer units. In doing so, it charts possible futures for small farm holdings and identifies means of integrating their progress and sustainability alongside that of the rest of the economy. Further, it provides arguments for the relevance of small holdings in connection with sustainable livelihoods and welfare at the grass roots, while also catering to the welfare needs of society at the macro level. The book makes a valuable contribution to the scholarship of agrarian as well as peri-urban transdisciplinary literature. For agrarian academics, students and the teaching community, the book’s broad and topical coverage make it a valuable resource. For development practitioners and for those working on issues related to urbanisation, urban peripheries and the rural–urban interface, this book offers a new perspective that considers the primary sector on par with the secondary and tertiary. It also offers an insightful guide for policymakers and non-government organisations working in this area.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Maharashtra is an important state of India so far as its contribution to the agriculture development of the country is concerned. During the last four decades, the agricultural sector of Maharashtra has undergone lots of changes. Though agricultural performance improved during the last forty years, its progress was not sustained and showed wide fluctuations. In fact, the important characteristics of Maharashtra agriculture are the instability in crop production and significant regional variations in the performance of agriculture in the state. The recent farmer suicides in Vidarbha and Marathawada have once again highlighted regional disparity in Maharashtra. The agrarian crisis in Vidarbha has spun almost out of control. There are a number of factors which limit the growth of agriculture over the years in the state. It is, therefore, necessary to look into the factors affecting agricultural growth.

Download or read book Undeserved Death: A Study on Suicide of Farmers in Andhra Pradesh (2000 - 2005) written by K.S. Bhat and published by Allied Publishers. This book was released on 2006-07-12 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The multi-dimensional nature of farmers' distress in several states of India is pushing farmers to commit suicides. The deficiencies in institutional factors — those related to credit, insurance, supply of inputs such as seeds, fertilizers, pesticides and marketing —are becoming serious. Social factors such as the non-empowerment of elected local bodies, the exploitative attitude of moneylenders and merchants, and gender discrimination are aggravating the deprivation of small and marginal farmers and landless agricultural labourers. Compounding the crumbling institutional and social support systems are the other factors such as disconnection between research, education and extension organizations and rural realities, land degradation, unsustainable exploitation of groundwater and consecutive droughts. All these resulted in the agrarian crisis, more particularly in Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, Tamilnadu, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Orissa, Gujarat and Punjab. Analyzing some of these factors pertaining to agrarian crisis and farmer's suicides, a pilot study and other articles in this book analytically bring out the prevailing situation in Andhra Pradesh. A few articles in the book also highlight the situation in Karnataka, Maharashtra and Punjab. Some of the implications discussed by the academicians, activists, researchers and others will definitely help the policy makers in their future programme to safeguard and strengthen the livelihood security of the families of resource-poor small and marginal farmers. The book will be of immense use both for the scholars and the government authorities.
