Book excerpt: Crop receipts are a promising innovation in agricultural finance first developed in Brazil about 20 years ago and recently replicated in Eastern Europe. Crop Receipts allow farmers to obtain pre-harvest finance against a promise to produce a certain amount of crops, with their future farm production serving as main collateral. Taking inspiration from past successes, this study examines the scope for adapting crop receipts to the African context and for introducing them on a pilot basis. The study analysis of the evolution of crop receipts and explores opportunities, challenges and entry points for crop receipt in Africa. Crop receipt pilots in Uganda and Zambia are considered based on a detailed assessment of the legal frameworks, financial and agricultural sectors, and stakeholder consultations. The report closes with the main findings and offers some strategic and operational considerations for introducing crop receipt finance in Africa. The study was conducted by the FAO investment Centre within its partnership with the International Finance Corporation (IFC) with co-funding from the GAFSP Private Sector Window. While the primary objective of the study is to guide IFC in exploring concrete investment opportunities for piloting crop receipts, its findings and recommendations could be of interest to a broader set of stakeholders in agricultural finance and development.

Book Synopsis Improved Crop Quality by Nutrient Management by : Dilek Anaç
Download or read book Improved Crop Quality by Nutrient Management written by Dilek Anaç and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2007-11-23 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Emphasis in agricultural production has shifted from mere quantity to quality products. Practical experience and scientific investigations have shown that, of the various culture measures, balanced fertilization above all exerts a considerable influence on the quality of agricultural products. Simply adding more of what the crop has already absorbed to capacity is unproductive, expensive, wasteful and damaging to the environment. Therefore, balanced crop nutrition increases crop quality, safeguards natural resources and brings benefit to the farmer. Otherwise rapid population growth and severe urbanization will exhaust our natural resources.
Book Synopsis Eric J. Hanson's Financial History of Alberta, 1905-1950 by : Eric John Hanson
Download or read book Eric J. Hanson's Financial History of Alberta, 1905-1950 written by Eric John Hanson and published by University of Calgary Press. This book was released on 2003 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Eric Hanson Albertas first, and arguably greatest, economist wrote a number of influential books on federal-provincial relations, education finance, health care finance, and energy economics. His doctoral thesis was entitled A Financial History of Alberta, 1905-1950 and was found by Paul Boothe at the University of Alberta library while Boothe was doing research on Alberta government spending almost forty-five years after it was written. This "forgotten gem" sheds light on the institutional, economic, and public development of the province from a financial perspective. With a detailed and analytical introduction, this edited work provides historical perspective on the perennial problems facing Alberta's fiscal managers: wildly fluctuating revenues, in-migration, seemingly insatiable demands for infrastructure, high-quality public services, and resistance to taxes while exuding an optimistic attitude for the future.
