Book Synopsis Analytical Methods in Wood Chemistry, Pulping, and Papermaking by : Eero Sjöström
Download or read book Analytical Methods in Wood Chemistry, Pulping, and Papermaking written by Eero Sjöström and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In its broadest sense, and according to the traditional conception, wood chemistry is a comprehensive discipline, ranging from fundamental studies to practical applications. The manifold constituents, located in different morphological regions in the wood, results in an extreme complexity of wood chemistry. Ever more sophisticated endeavors needing fundamental studies and advanced analytical methods are necessary in order to delve deeper into various problems in pulping and papermaking. Gradually, new, improved ana lytical methods, originally developed for research purposes, are currently replacing many of the old "routine" methods in practical applications. Because of the expanse of the subject, an attempt to write a book of this size about analytical methods seems, perhaps, too ambitious. Of course, a whole book series of several volumes would be necessary to cover this topic completely. However, there is undoubtedly a need for a more condensed presentation which does not go into experimental details, but is limited to the basic principles of the analytical methods and illustrates their applica tions. The emphasis is on more advanced and potential methods, and partic ularly on those based on different types of spectroscopy and chromatography.

Book Synopsis Ecosystem Management in the Boreal Forest by : Sylvie Gauthier
Download or read book Ecosystem Management in the Boreal Forest written by Sylvie Gauthier and published by PUQ. This book was released on 2009 with total page 574 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Forest Ecosystem Management. A management approach that aims to maintain healthy and resilient forest ecosystems by focusing on a reduction of differences between natural and managed landscapes to ensure long-term maintenance of ecosystem functions and thereby retain the social and economic benefits they provide to society. That is the definition of forest ecosystem management proposed in this book, which provides a summary of key ecological concepts supporting this approach. The book includes a review of major disturbance regimes that shape the natural dynamics of the boreal forest and gives examples from different Canadian boreal regions. Several projects implementing the forest ecosystem management approach are presented to illustrate the challenges created by current forestry practices and the solutions that this new approach can provide. In short, knowledge and understanding of forest dynamics can serve as a guide for forest management. Planning interventions based on natural dynamics can facilitate reconciliation between forest harvesting needs and the interests of other forest users.
Book Synopsis Linear Mixed-Effects Models Using R by : Andrzej Gałecki
Download or read book Linear Mixed-Effects Models Using R written by Andrzej Gałecki and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-02-05 with total page 558 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Linear mixed-effects models (LMMs) are an important class of statistical models that can be used to analyze correlated data. Such data are encountered in a variety of fields including biostatistics, public health, psychometrics, educational measurement, and sociology. This book aims to support a wide range of uses for the models by applied researchers in those and other fields by providing state-of-the-art descriptions of the implementation of LMMs in R. To help readers to get familiar with the features of the models and the details of carrying them out in R, the book includes a review of the most important theoretical concepts of the models. The presentation connects theory, software and applications. It is built up incrementally, starting with a summary of the concepts underlying simpler classes of linear models like the classical regression model, and carrying them forward to LMMs. A similar step-by-step approach is used to describe the R tools for LMMs. All the classes of linear models presented in the book are illustrated using real-life data. The book also introduces several novel R tools for LMMs, including new class of variance-covariance structure for random-effects, methods for influence diagnostics and for power calculations. They are included into an R package that should assist the readers in applying these and other methods presented in this text.

Book Synopsis Planting Depth and Its Influence on Survival and Growth by : Terrence David Schwan
Download or read book Planting Depth and Its Influence on Survival and Growth written by Terrence David Schwan and published by [Timmins] : Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources, Northeast Science and Technology. This book was released on 1994 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Current practice in Ontario for planting tree seedlings is to place the root collar level with the soil surface. There is evidence that deeper planting can improve performance of certain tree species, and this report reviews 11 relevant studies of deep planting of jack pine, black spruce, white spruce, and other North American conifers. Explanations, as described in the literature, of environmental & biological consequence are provided and current planting practices are described. Finally, the current findings as they applied to the above three species are summarized.
