Book excerpt: Excerpt from Crofutt's Trans-Continental Tourist: Containing a Full and Authentic Description of Over Five Hundred Cities, Towns, Villages, Stations, Government Forts and Camps, Mountains, Lakes, Rivers, Sulphur, Soda, and Hot Springs, Scenery, Watering Places, Summer Resorts The author, being naturally modest, the writing of a Preface comes exceedingly difficult. But, Custom and Fashion - the Geni-na that has transformed God's best gift to man into the shape of a dromedary - has forced us to the effort. It would be truly marvelous if there were no errors to be found in this book - a book of positive statements - which covers a scope of country over two thousand miles in extent, and hundreds of miles in width - a vast empire, as it were - a country that Only a few years ago was almost Wholly unexplored and unknown to the white race. But since the completion of the Pacific Railroad, it has been occupied by over half a. Million of the most adventurous, active, honest and progressive white people that the world can produce - people that are build ing cities, towns and villages as though by magic; prospecting, discovering and developing the great treasure chambers of the continent; extending our grand system of railroads all over the country, like a vast net-work or engaged in the cultivation of the inexhaustible soil, which is literally causing the wilderness to blossom like the rose. Where such mighty changes are taking place so rapidly, it would indeed be a. Wonder if some of the numberless improvements that are in progress were not omitted. Yet we think there are few, if any, of sufficient importance to be of interest to the tourist, but what some mention can be found at the proper place in this volume of the guide, but from the limited space the descriptions are necessarily short, ouly touching on the most important facts. Book excerpt: Railroads, tourism, and government bureaucracy combined to create modern religion in the American West, argues David Walker in this innovative study of Mormonism's ascendency in the railroad era. The center of his story is Corinne, Utah—an end-of-the-track, hell-on-wheels railroad town founded by anti-Mormon businessmen. In the disputes over this town's frontier survival, Walker discovers intense efforts by a variety of theological, political, and economic interest groups to challenge or secure Mormonism's standing in the West. Though Corinne's founders hoped to leverage industrial capital to overthrow Mormon theocracy, the town became the site of a very different dream. Economic and political victory in the West required the production of knowledge about different religious groups settling in its lands. As ordinary Americans advanced their own theories about Mormondom, they contributed to the rise of religion itself as a category of popular and scholarly imagination. At the same time, new and advantageous railroad-related alliances catalyzed LDS Church officials to build increasingly dynamic religious institutions. Through scrupulous research and wide-ranging theoretical engagement, Walker shows that western railroads did not eradicate or diminish Mormon power. To the contrary, railroad promoters helped establish Mormonism as a normative American religion.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The digital age is burning out our most precious resources and the future of the past is at stake. In After Disruption: A Future for Cultural Memory, Trevor Owens warns that our institutions of cultural memory—libraries, archives, museums, humanities departments, research institutes, and more—have been “disrupted,” and largely not for the better. He calls for memory workers and memory institutions to take back control of envisioning the future of memory from management consultants and tech sector evangelists. After Disruption posits that we are no longer planning for a digital future, but instead living in a digital present. In this context, Owens asks how we plan for and develop a more just, sustainable, and healthy future for cultural memory. The first half of the book draws on critical scholarship on the history of technology and business to document and expose the sources of tech startup ideologies and their pernicious results, revealing that we need powerful and compelling counter frameworks and values to replace these ideologies. The second half of the book makes the case for the centrality of maintenance, care, and repair as interrelated frameworks to build a better future in which libraries, archives, and museums can thrive as sites of belonging and connection through collections.
