Book Synopsis Linguistic Justice at the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia by : Besmir Fidahić
Download or read book Linguistic Justice at the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia written by Besmir Fidahić and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2020-11-24 with total page 389 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first of its kind, this book treats language justice in the realm of the international criminal law, focusing specifically on the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia (ICTY). Defining linguistic justice to mean whether the parties to the proceedings have been addressed by the ICTY in their own language, this study explores the conditions for the delivery of linguistic justice in a context where language plays a key role in the conflict. After presenting a very brief history of language quarrels in the former Yugoslavia and pointing to a series of examples where the language, and underlying ethnic and national identities, have been used as a tool for a conflict, the book reviews ICTY language laws, language-related case law, and procedural linguistic equality of arms between the ICTY Prosecution and Defense to set the stage for language-related work that had to be carried out by the ICTY’s language services providers. After reviewing the history, the recruitment, professional criteria and standards, and training of all ICTY language professionals, this book explores whether linguistic justice has been served by showing overall outputs in translation and interpretation, overall ethnicity- and nationality-based language service delivery, and translation of the permanent court record. It shows that there is much more to provision of language services at international criminal tribunals adjudicating on ethnically motivated war crimes than traditionally thought, and questions whether any of it make any sense as things stand.

Download or read book The Nonconformists written by Nick Miller and published by Central European University Press. This book was released on 2007-01-01 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nick Miller argues in this provocative study that to comprehend Yugoslavia's collapse, we must examine the development and nature of Serbian nationalism, and the typical approaches will not suffice. Serbia's national movement of the 1980s and 1990s, Miller suggests, was not the product of an ancient, immutable, and aggressive Serbian national identity; nor was it an artificial creation of powerful political actors looking to capitalize on its mobilizing power. In examining the work of three influential Serbian intellectuals, Miller argues that cultural processes are too often ignored in favor of political ones; that Serbian intellectuals did work within a historical context, but that they were not slaves to the past; that Serbian history is not a continuous reiteration of static themes. His subjects are Dobrica Cosic (a novelist), Mica Popovic (a painter) and Borislav Mihajlovic Mihiz (a literary critic). These three men were part of a circle of friends who began the postwar with (mostly!) open minds about the promise of the new communist order and who wound up by 1974 as inveterate opponents of the regime and nationalists. Together, the work of these men indicates that nationalism was more than a tool for cynical and needy politicians, and less an ancient bequest than an unsurprising response to real conditions in Tito's Yugoslavia. Book Synopsis Intra- and Interlingual Translation in Flux by : Višnja Jovanović
Download or read book Intra- and Interlingual Translation in Flux written by Višnja Jovanović and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-02-17 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book extends new lines of inquiry on intra- and interlingual translation, building on Jakobson’s classification of translational relations to take into account the full complexity of language and the role of social dimensions in fostering linguistic unity and identity. Jovanović argues that intra- and interlingual translation do not form a stable relationship but, in fact, are both contingent on how languages and their borders are defined. Chapters unpack the causes and effects of this instability through the lens of Serbo- Croatian literature, where the impact of sociopolitical pressure on language over time can be keenly observed. Drawing on work from translation studies, sociolinguistics, close reading, distant reading, and discourse analysis, Jovanović charts how linguistic fluidity, where linguistic borders are challenged at both the macro and the micro level as a result of sociopolitical change, in turns shapes literary and cultural circulation. In its examination of the intersection of the linguistic and social in translational relations in the Serbo- Croatian context, the book can offer wider insights into better understanding the literary and translational landscape of analogous sociolinguistic and geographic milieus. This volume will be of interest to scholars in literary translation, translation theory, sociology of translation, comparative literature, and multilingualism.

Book Synopsis Language and Ethnonationalism in Contemporary West Central Balkans by : Adnan Ajšić
Download or read book Language and Ethnonationalism in Contemporary West Central Balkans written by Adnan Ajšić and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-06-03 with total page 187 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book uses a specialized corpus of public language-related discourse to investigate links between language ideologies and ethnonationalism in contemporary West Central Balkans. Despite a century and a half of shared linguistic history, the nations making up the central part of former Yugoslavia continue to debate the ownership over the common language, creating much animosity, some legal issues, and often absurd circumstances. At the heart of the ongoing language debate over Central South Slavic is the belief in language as the cornerstone of ethnonational identity and the legitimacy of ethnic groups’ claims to sovereignty. Given a history of conflict and the recent resurgence in extreme ethnonationalism, an understanding of ethnolinguistic contestation in the region is as important as ever. This book will be of interest to social scientists working in fields as diverse as (applied) linguistics, anthropology, media studies, political science, sociology and history, as well as other scholars with an interest in language and society.
