Book excerpt: A weed control program that utilizes PRE herbicides and ensures a timely post-emergence weed removal could protect growth and yield of corn. The use of pre-emergence (PRE) herbicides for weed control could reduce the need for multiple POST applications of glyphosate in glyphosate-tolerant (GT) corn and provide an additional mode of action for combating glyphosate-resistant weeds. Thus, field studies were conducted in 2017 and 2018 at Concord, NE with the following objectives develop weed management recommendations that considers soil applied herbicides and determine proper timing of glyphosate based on the crop growth stage. Therefore the material in this thesis is presented in three chapters: Chapter 1 outlines the integrated weed management, critical period of weed control, and pre-emergence (PRE) or post-emergence (POST) herbicide use in corn. Chapter 2 determines the critical time for weed removal in glyphosate-tolerant corn without pre-emergence (PRE) herbicide and atrazine or Verdict-Zidua applied pre-emergence (PRE). Chapter 3 determines how the timing of weed removal and PRE herbicides application could influence growth and yield of glyphosate-tolerant corn.

This book was released on 2004 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cotton and soybean resistant to glyphosate are widely planted in the United States. Ninety-five percent of the cotton and 85% of the soybean in North Carolina is glyphosate-resistant (GR). Rapid adoption of the technology is attributed to broad spectrum weed control, convenience of glyphosate-based weed management systems, and greater rotational crop flexibility. Corn resistant to glyphosate is less widely grown, but plantings are expected to increase. Wide-spread planting of GR crops in the United States and glyphosate patent expiration has led to a proliferation of glyphosate products. Growers have questioned their advisors on efficacy and crop tolerance of many of these products. Field experiments were conducted to evaluate 10 glyphosate products, representing isopropylamine, diammonium, and potassium salts, applied postemergence (POST) and postemergence-directed (PDIR) at 630 and 1680 g ae/ha for GR corn and GR cotton tolerance and weed control. There were no differences among products for control of six annual grass and 10 annual broadleaf weed species. No injury to corn from any glyphosate product at 630 or 1680 g/ha or to cotton from 630 g/ha was noted at any of seven locations. ClearOut 41 Plus"! an isopropylamine salt of glyphosate, and Roundup WEATHERMAX"! a potassium salt of glyphosate, applied POST at 1680 g/ha injured cotton 27 to 30% and 10 to 17%, respectively, at 3 of 7 locations. No cotton injury was noted with Glyfos®, Glyfos® X-TRA, Glyphomax"! Gly Star"!Original, Roundup Original"! Roundup UltraMAX®, Touchdown®, or Touchdown Total"! No differences were noted among glyphosate products or between rates for corn or cotton yield or cotton fiber properties. Field studies were conducted at six sites during 2002 and 2003 to evaluate weed control and glyphosate-resistant corn response to glyphosate and nicosulfuron plus atrazine applied POST as affected by PRE herbicide and timing of POST herbicide.

The latest edition continues the tradition set by the original book, and covers weed science research that has been published since 1980. This book aims to reduce the instance of research duplication—saving scientists and supporting institutions time and money. Not only does the second edition of Weed Crop Competition review, summarize, and combine current research; it critiques the research as well. This text has the potential to accelerate advancements in weed crop competition, which remains an important factor that affects crop yields. Scientists in foreign countries where access to literature is often limited or nonexistent, will find the information in this text invaluable. Weed scientists, crop scientists, plant ecologists, sustainable agriculturists, and organic agriculturists will be well-pleased with this long overdue and much needed new editionWeed Crop Competition provides a unique reference that reviews, summarises and synthesizes the literature published concerning research on this topic. The first edition has been one of the most frequently cited sources in weed science for the past 20 years. The second edition covers the significant body of literature that has been published since 1980. Originally intended to survey existing research, the intent of the book is to reduce the instance of research duplication, thus saving scientists and their institutions time and money, and expediting advancements in weed crop competition, an important factor affecting crop yields. Scientists in foreign countries where access to the literature is often limited or non-existent, find the information an invaluable resource. This long overdue and much needed new edition rejuvenates the tradition set by the original book.

Book excerpt: Ecologically Based Weed Management Protect crop yields and strengthen ecosystems with this essential guide Research into weed management is an increasingly critical component of both environmental stewardship and food production. The potential cost of weed propagation can be measured in crop yield reductions, under-nourished populations, stymied economies, and more. The propagation of herbicide-resistant weed populations means that purely chemical weed management is no longer viable; food production can now be secured only with an ecological approach to weed control. Ecologically Based Weed Management details such approaches and their potential to manage weeds across a range of agricultural and environmental contexts. It emphasizes the deployment of ecological principles to prevent weed infestations, reduce crop losses, and strengthen ecosystems. In a time when growing population and changing climates are placing enormous pressure on global food production, this approach to weed management has never been more vital. Ecologically Based Weed Management readers will also find: A global team of expert contributors to a multidisciplinary approach Detailed discussion of topics like herbicide limitation, integrated weed management, and more Insights pertinent to agriculture, academia, government, industry, and more Ecologically Based Weed Management is ideal for researchers in agriculture chemistry, weed science, agronomy, ecology, and related fields, as well as for regulators and advanced students.
