Book excerpt: Aimed at final year undergraduate students, this is the first volume to publish in a new series of text covering core subjects in operational research in an accessible student-friendly format. This volume presents simulation paired with inventory control. The Operational Research Series aims to provide a new generation of European-originated texts of practical relevance to todays student. To guarantee accessibility, the texts are concise and have a non-mathematical orientation. These texts will provide students with the grounding in operational research theory they need to become the innovators of tomorrow. This is one of the first volumes in a new series of textbooks in operational research. The key objectives of the series are to provide concise introductions to the core topics in operational research focusing on the practical relevance of those topics to today's students and taking a non-mathematical orientation in favour of software applications. Each core subject will be paired with another core subject in order to provide maximum value for money for students.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A question which combines statistics and linear programming considerations was first raised by G. Tintner (Econometrica 28:2, 490-5, April 60). It concerns the distribution of optimum functional values when a linear programming problem has probabilistic constraints. It is proposed to accord a chance constrained programming formulation to this kind of problem and to deal with it in a way that bears on project scheduling of the kind that is usually associated with critical path analysis, for instance, in PERT. The main focus of this paper is on the statistical distributions of the project completion (and subcompletion) times. The question of total time distributions that we deal with can therefore be given a managerial policy flavor by assuming that, ab initio, a management is considering a contract for a certain project. The task sequences are known but the times are not known except in probability. Before contracting for a target completion date--with resulting delay penalties--this management would like to know the likely distribution of total times in order to decide whether to accept an offered contract or else bargain further on the completion dates, penalty rates and progress payments and prices. Book excerpt: Includes one IBM/PC floppy disk. System Requirements: Monochrome monitors, IBM-compatible machines, minimum: 286 IBM, DOS 2.0 or higher. This book gives a complete, concise introduction to the theory and applications of linear programming. It emphasizes the practical applications of mathematics, and makes the subject more accessible to individuals with varying mathematical abilities. It is one of the first rigorous linear programming texts that does not require linear algebra as a prerequisite. In addition, this text contains a floppy disk containing the program SIMPLEX, designed to help students solve problems using the computer. Key Features * Less rigorous mathematically - will appeal to individuals with varying mathematical abilities * Includes a floppy disk containing the program SIMPLEX and an appendix to help students solve problems using the computer * Includes chapters on network analysis and dynamic programming - topics of great interest to business majors and industrial engineers * Includes modem applications - selected computer programs for solving various max/min applications

Book Synopsis Strategic Allocation of Resources Using Linear Programming Model with Parametric Analysis: in MATLAB and Excel Solver by : Dinesh Gupta
Download or read book Strategic Allocation of Resources Using Linear Programming Model with Parametric Analysis: in MATLAB and Excel Solver written by Dinesh Gupta and published by Anchor Academic Publishing (aap_verlag). This book was released on 2014-05-27 with total page 77 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the late 1940s, linear programming models have been used for many different purposes. Airline companies apply these models to optimize their use of planes and staff. NASA has been using them for many years to optimize their use of limited resources. Oil companies use them to optimize their refinery operations. Small and medium-sized businesses use linear programming to solve a huge variety of problems, often involving resource allocation. In my study, a typical product-mix problem in a manufacturing system producing two products (each product consists of two sub-assemblies) is solved for its optimal solution through the use of the latest versions of MATLAB having the command simlp, which is very much like linprog. As analysts, we try to find a good enough solution for the decision maker to make a final decision. Our attempt is to give the mathematical description of the product-mix optimization problem and bring the problem into a form ready to call MATLAB’s simlp command. The objective of this study is to find the best product mix that maximizes profit. The graph obtained using MATLAB commands, give the shaded area enclosed by the constraints called the feasible region, which is the set of points satisfying all the constraints. To find the optimal solution we look at the lines of equal profit to find the corner of the feasible region which yield the highest profit. This corner can be found out at the farthest line of equal profit, which still touches the feasible region. The most critical part is the sensitivity analysis, using Excel Solver, and Parametric Analysis, using computer software, which allows us to study the effect on optimal solution due to discrete and continuous change in parameters of the LP model including to identify bottlenecks. We have examined other options like product outsourcing, one-time cost, cross training of one operator, manufacturing of hypothetical third product on under-utilized machines and optimal sequencing of jobs on machines.
