Book excerpt: In 1994, the Forest Inventory and Analysis (FIA) and Forest Health Monitoring programs of the U.S. Forest Service implemented a national ozone (O3) biomonitoring program designed to address specific questions about the area and percent of forest land subject to levels of O3 pollution that may negatively affect the forest ecosystem. This is the first and only nationally consistent effort to monitor O3 stress on the forests of the United States. This report provides background information on O3 and its effects on trees and ecosystems, and describes the rationale behind using sensitive bioindicator plants to detect O3 stress and assess the risk of probable O3 impact. Also included are a description of field methods, analytic techniques, estimation procedures, and how to access, use and interpret the ozone bioindicator attributes and data outputs such as the national ozone risk map.

Book excerpt: Rising tropospheric ozone (O3) concentrations pose a critical threat to forest ecosystems. A stomatal flux-based risk evaluation methodology at leaf level was established recently in the context of the Convention on Long-Range Transboundary Air Pollution. This study demonstrates improvement and validation of the stomatal flux–effect approach for European beech and Norway spruce with results from the 8-year free-air O3 enrichment experiment at Kranzberg Forest (Germany). Based on the recommended O3/water vapour diffusivity ratio of 0.663, provisional corrected flux–effect functions for beech and spruce were deduced. Comparison of observed and modelled loss in annual growth under twice-ambient O3 exposure relative to whole-stem productivity under ambient O3 seems to confirm the Convention’s leaf-level stomatal flux approach and the associated response function for Norway spruce up to twice-ambient O3 exposure. For European beech, it must be emphasized that the Convention’s methodology may underestimate the risk for loss in whole-stem productivity.

Book excerpt: Six years of monitoring for ozone injury by the Pacific Northwest Research Station Forest Inventory and Analysis Program are reported. The methods used to evaluate injury, compute an injury index, and estimate risk are described. Extensive injury was detected on ozone biomonitoring sites for all years in California, with ponderosa and Jeffrey pines, mugwort, skunkbush, and blue elderberry showing injury. Little or no injury was detected in Oregon and Washington. The relation of observed injury to ambient ozone levels is discussed. The areas with the highest modeled risk of ozone injury are the areas east of Los Angeles, the southern Sierra Nevada, and portions of the central coast.

Book excerpt: Unique in the world, the project MOTTLES takes place in the main European areas at highest and medium risk of O3 injury, relative to human well-being and vegetation impacts, i.e. Southern and central Europe and combines field epidemiology with plant-responses to O3. A standard for forest protection is considered biologically relevant when it translates into real-world forest impacts. For this reason, epidemiological investigations where large-scale biological responses (e.g radial growth, crown defoliation and visible foliar O3 injury) are compared with ambient data in the field provide useful information for establishing the best standards and thresholds for forest protection from O3. Ozone effects on vegetation depend on the air concentrations but also on the O3 uptake through the stomata, i.e. Phytotoxic Ozone Dose above a threshold Y of uptake (PODY). With the effort of implementing permanent new-generation monitoring stations across Europe, capable to return continuous hourly O3 concentrations with meteorological and environmental parameters in real-time, PODY is estimated and correlated to measured forest-response indicators to develop flux-based critical levels (CLef) for forest protection against O3. Based on real-world flux-effect relationships, derivation of suitable species-specific epidemiologically-based O3 critical levels for European tree species represents a considerable progress in the development of methods for quantifying O3 effects on vegetation at the regional scale. This work was carried out with the contribution of the LIFE financial instrument of the European Union (LIFE15 ENV/IT/000183) in the framework of the MOTTLES project u201cMonitoring ozone injury for setting new critical levelsu201d.

This book was released on 1995 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The development, construction and operation of an open-air fumigation system for exposing young forest trees to controlled concentrations of sulphur dioxide and ozone is described. A computer simulation of gas dispersion was used to design an array of pipework sources which minimized spatial variability in exposure concentrations. Five fumigation plots were constructed using the design and were used to fumigate trees during a 7 year study known as the Liphook Forest Fumigation Project. Rates of gas release were controlled by a small computer to follow predetermined patterns of sulphur dioxide concentration and to maintain an elevation above ambient ozone concentration, Effective control of exposure was demonstrated, and examples of experimentally produced concentration frequency distributions are provided. The advantages and shortcomings of the system are discussed with recommendations for future improvements.

Book excerpt: The Montreal Process was formed in 1994 to develop an internationally agreed upon set of criteria and indicators for the conservation and sustainable management of temperate and boreal forests (Anonymous 1995). In response, the Forest Inventory and Analysis (FIA) and Forest Health Monitoring (FHM) programs of the U.S. Forest Service implemented a national ozone (O3) biomonitoring program to address specific questions about the area and percent of forest land subject to levels of O3 pollution that may negatively affect the forest ecosystem. This is the first and only nationally consistent effort to monitor O3 stress on the forests of the United States. This program provides critical baseline information on the current status of O3 air quality and the potential effects of O3 on forest health and productivity.

Book excerpt: Ozone is a phytotoxic air pollutant, impairing photosynthesis and reducing plant growth. The predicted increase in tropospheric ozone concentration could lead to an increased vulnerability of forests, mitigating carbon sink strength of vegetation under the increasing atmospheric CO2 concentration. To improve European risk indices, currently based on atmospheric O3 concentration (i.e. O3 exposure), it is necessary to assess the phytotoxic ozone dose, reflecting the balance between stomatal ozone uptake and detoxification capacity of foliar cells. Advancing knowledge on plant response mechanisms would allow for integrating a sub-model into global ozone impact prediction models towards consolidating process-based indices for risk assessment. Crucial parameters are (i) stomatal characteristics, (ii) constitutive detoxification potential, (iii) capacity for antioxidant regeneration and (iv) cellular redox power. The combination of ozone with other impacting factors (drought, high temperature and CO2) will be discussed in view of the challenge of scaling tree-level ozone responses to the forest ecosystem level under conditions of climate change.
