Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to determine the perceptions of chief academic officers (CAOs) and chief distance education officers (CDOs) regarding faculty satisfaction in areas of released time for training and course development, workload, overall support of distance education, and extra compensation. One-hundred-sixteen surveys were sent out by e-mail to all 58 community colleges in North Carolina. The data for this study came from the returned surveys. The combined return rate of surveys was 78%. The SAS Institute program procedures were used for the analysis of the data. An alpha level of .05 was used for all statistical analyses. Results of this study showed differences between the CAOs and CDOs regarding faculty satisfaction on key issues. One reason for this could be more frequent contact of faculty with CDOs than with the CAOs. Recommendations for further research include: 1. This study should be replicated in 2 to 3 years to ascertain what changes have occurred in North Carolina community colleges; 2. Similar comparative studies should be made regarding community colleges in other states; 3. Additional studies should be conducted in North Carolina to gather comments and concerns directly from faculty members. The following recommendations are made to improve distance education in North Carolina: 1. Adequate technology funding for distance education programs in North Carolina community colleges needs to be acquired; 2. A state formula should be developed to enable the sharing of FTE for community colleges in North Carolina that provide joint distance education programs; 3. Long-range plans for supporting and training faculty members and funding distance education programs should be developed in North Carolina community colleges; 4. Community colleges without written distance education policies should develop them; 5. Community college administrators should become better informed about the needs of distance education faculty members and programs; and 6. A state wide task-force needs to be developed to study the needs of distance education faculty members and programs in North Carolina.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a product of a dissertation project that was completed in December 2006. This project investigated teachers’ experiences in relation to teaching and learning using the hybrid-context instructional model. The dissertation itself has been noted as one of the best in providing practical tips for teachers in this area. The study methodology is included as appendix B. To answer the questions raised during the interviews, the findings of the study have been supplemented and supported with extensive literature review of empirical studies to provide theoretical and practical solutions. The literature review draws from total Internet, blended, and hybrid instruction studies. The literature on the total Internet instruction has relevance in that the Internet piece of the hybrid-context course shares the same course management systems and requires the same approaches and principles as do total Internet instruction. The book discusses the conceptual and descriptive presentations of the hybrid-context model, media, applicable teaching philosophies; strategies best accomplished in each medium; various ways of linking the face-to-face and the Internet activities; the why and how the study participants transitioned into teaching hybrid-context courses, teachers’ expectations, etc. The discussion on ‘labor of love’ is the core of this book as the discussion has captured the surprises the study participants met in a way that is not reflected in the current literature. Built into this discussion are the amounts of things teachers had to learn in order to function well as hybrid-context model teachers. The contents of this book will aide teachers who teach in any way using the Internet. Therefore, any establishment/individual using the Internet for teaching and learning will benefit from the contents of this book. Also, the administrators will find this book a selling point to encourage more participation in the adoption of the hybrid-context instructional model as well as realizing what the teachers would need to successfully implement this phenomenon.

Book excerpt: Community colleges are composed of full-time faculty and adjunct faculty who serve a diverse student population. As faculty they are expected to remain up-to-date in the best practices of instruction; to be experts in their areas of specialty; and are traditionally non-trained academics. At the same time, regional accrediting agencies have also established accreditation guidelines where faculty are to be qualified; have access to professional development opportunities; and online faculty have access to appropriate training. This study sought to understand full-time and adjunct faculty members0́9 attitudes, skills, and institutional resources towards professional development opportunities available to individuals who teach and develop online courses. This quantitative research employed an Internet-based survey of full-time and adjunct faculty who work on the 58 different North Carolina Community College Systems campuses. The questionnaire consisted of three topics (a) attitudes, (b) skill, and (c) institutional resources. Respondents were asked to rate the importance of each topic along a 5-point Likert scale. The study posed both research questions and hypotheses. Research questions concerning the perceptions of online teaching and course development were answered by computing descriptive statistics for each category. Null hypotheses regarding the perceptions among full-time faculty and adjunct faculty were tested with independent samples t-tests on comparing the importance to online instruction and their self-assessment. Next, paired samples t-tests were used to compare the similarities and differences between the full-time faculty0́9s and adjunct faculty0́9s responses. Results indicated consensus in the perceptions of both full-time faculty and adjunct faculty along the topics of skills and institutional resources with attitudes reflecting one question with non-agreement. A statistically significant difference existed among all three professional development categories in the comparison between importance to online instruction and the self-assessment except for one area: the self-assessment on institutional resources. Results indicated faculty have a growth mindset and are receptive to ongoing professional development opportunities that are related to their interests while efficiently using campus resources.

Book excerpt: Leaders from both private and public institutions provide a 360-degree view of the challenges and opportunities facing higher education—and offer a manifesto for restoring relevance and respect. Where is the value in higher education? How can higher education restore its relevance and trust with students and parents? Are there really any meaningful differences between public and private higher education? This volume probes those questions and more, exploring the myriad issues that have led many people to question whether higher education is worth the sacrifices it requires of parents and students. Drawing on the experience and expertise of a wide variety of highly renowned academics, respected government officials, and well-grounded individuals from the private sector, this thought-provoking book offers readers simple but powerful ways to evaluate whether prospective colleges and universities merit the very substantial investment of time, abilities, and financial resources they necessitate. Readers will learn what to look for in a college or university and what questions to ask in selecting an institution of higher education. They will also learn how parents, students, academicians, and other stakeholders can advocate for changes to benefit both higher education and the constituency it serves.

Update your practices as you learn about current theory and research with the authoritative Handbook of College Science Teaching. The Handbook offers models of teaching and learning that go beyond the typical lecture-laboratory format and provides rationales for updated practices in the college classroom. The 38 chapters, each written by experienced, award-wining science faculty, are organized into eight sections: attitudes and motivations; active learning; factors affecting learning; innovative teaching approaches; use for technology, for both teaching and student research; special challenges, such as teaching effectively to culturally diverse or learning disabled students; pre-college science instruction; and improving instruction. No other book fills the Handbook's unique niche as a definitive guide for science professors in all content areas. It even includes special help for those who teach non-science majors at the freshman and sophomore levels. The Handbook is ideal for graduate teaching assistants in need of a solid introduction, senior faculty and graduate cooridinators in charge of training new faculty and grad students, and mid-career professors in search of invigoration.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Learning methods for the twenty-first century will include those which are student-centered, learning-focused, and digitally enhanced. Teaching will become learning management; the lecturer will become a learning guide, and students will become learning inventors. This book provides chapters describing a number of methods to be used in higher education in the twenty-first century. Some methods have been in existence for a period of time; others are literally at the front edge of development. Trying them out, piloting them, and experimenting with them for the benefit of the student is well worth the effort. It is best to be as prepared as possible for future changes rather than waiting to see what is going to happen. Those who try and are successful will be the leaders in learning management of the near future. In the digital world, being at the leading edge has definite advantages. No matter which method is used, it should focus on the student as learner with the faculty member as a learning guide. To survive in the twenty-first century, students will need to become continuous learners, developing with changes at an exponential velocity. Educators need to keep this critical concept in mind.

Book excerpt: This study compared instructional behaviors between campus business instructors and online business instructors in the North Carolina community college system. It also compared the relationship of eight factors to the instructional behaviors of campus and online business instructors in the North Carolina community college system. The study was conducted at 15 community colleges in North Carolina; five large-size enrollment colleges, five medium-sized enrollment colleges, and five small-sized enrollment colleges. A survey instrument was developed and validated by eight professionals with experience or expertise in online education. A descriptive research design guided the investigation that yielded statistical descriptive data about how the variables were distributed between campus business instructors and online business instructors. Analysis of Variance and Chi-Square were used to compare the instructional behaviors of campus business instructors and online business instructors in the North Carolina community college system, as well as, to determine if there was a significant difference in the instructional behaviors used by both types of business instructors based on age, years of teaching, gender, educational level, training, online learning experience, specific types of technology used, and the use of specific types of instructional behaviors. This study concluded that significant differences were found between campus instructors and online instructors for the Pedagogical, Social, Managerial, and Technical instructional behaviors. Campus instructors reported using certain instructional behaviors more often than online instructors.

Book excerpt: This book has two things going for it that are rarely combined—it is fundamentally purposeful and it is useful. As the authors point out, there is a trilogy of needs confronting any business leader with a change agenda and/or transitioning into a new top role: influence, coalition building, and performance consulting. Of the three, performance consulting has received the least amount of attention in both the public and private-sector businesses. Because the focus on performance consulting rests primarily on the worker and the workplace environment, the authors contend that we must have a picture of how that environment has changed over the years. In this book, visionary leaders of community colleges will present their views about the present challenges and future approaches needed for community colleges to be successful.

Book excerpt: Institutional data is one of the important aspects that informs the development and sustainability of academic programming within the academy. Centrality of institutional data is key when making decisions related to a range of academic programs. This volume addresses with both depth and breadth: various types of academic programing (i.e. academic degrees, research centers/institutes), diverse institutional types including community colleges, doctoral/research universities, minority-serving and for-profit institutions, and concrete examples and steps regarding how to utilize institutional data to improve academic planning and development. This is the 168th volume of this Jossey-Bass quarterly report series. Timely and comprehensive, New Directions for Institutional Research provides planners and administrators in all types of academic institutions with guidelines in such areas as resource coordination, information analysis, program evaluation, and institutional management.
