Book excerpt: Excerpt from Critical Historical Essays, Vol. 1 The work of Dr. Nares has filled us with astonish' ment similar to that which Captain Lemuel felt when he first landed in Brobdingnag, and saw corn as high as the oaks in the New Forest, thimbles as large as buckets, and wrens of the bulk of turkeys. The whole book, and every component part of it, is on a gigantic scale. The title is as long as an ordi nary preface: the prefatory matter would furnish out an ordinary book; and the book contains as much reading as an ordinary library. We cannot sum up the merits of the stupendous mass of paper which lies before us better than by saying that it consists of about two thousand closely printed quarto pages, that it occupies fifteen hundred inches cubic measure, and. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Historical and Critical Essays, Vol. 1 of 2 I'r would be thought strange indeed, if there should exist a large, a'memorable section of history, trav ersed by many a scholar with various objects, reviewed by many a reader in a spirit of anxious scrutiny, and yet to this hour misunderstood; erroneously appro ciated; its tendencies mistaken, and its whole mean ing, import, value, not so much inadequately - as falsely, ignorantly, perversely - deciphered. Primd facie, one would pronounce this impossible. Never theless it is a truth; and it is a solemn truth; and what gives to it this solemnity, is the mysterious mean ing, the obscure hint of a still profounder meaning in the background, which begins to dawn upon the eye when first piercing the darkness now resting on the subject. Perhaps no one are or segment, detached from the total cycle of human records, piomises so much beforehand so much instruction, so much gratification to curiosity, so much Splendor, so much depth of interest, as the great period the systole and diastole, flux and reflux of the Western Roman Empire. Its parentage was magnificent and Titanic. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Ars est celare artem. The effect would fail if they had a showy character, as if invented for effect. Homer's employment of such details simply proves that he was a master of his art, and it is one of his highest triumphs to have produced on the distinguished statesman and scholar an effect analogous to that which Swift produced on the rude sailor, who declared that he knew Captain Gulliver very well, but that he lived at Queenhithe, not at Wapping. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Critical, Historical and Miscellaneous Essays, Vol. 2 of 6 Nothing is more amusing or instructive than to ob serve the manner in which people who think themselves wiser than all the rest Of the world fall into snares which the simple good sense of their neighbours detects and avoids. It is one of the principal tenets of the Utilitarians that sentiment and eloquence serve only to impede the pursuit of truth. They therefore affect a quakerly plainness, or rather a cynical negligence and impurity, of style. The strongest arguments, when clothed in brilliant language, seem to them so much wordy nonsense. In the mean time they surren der their understandings, with a facility found in no other party, to the meanest and most abject sophisms, provided those sophisms come before them disguised with the externals of demonstration. They do not seem to know that logic has its illusions as well as rhet orie, that a fallacy may lurk in a syllogism as well as in a metaphor. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Critical, Historical, and Miscellaneous Essays, Vol. 2 of 6: With a Memoir and Index No attempt has been made to remodel any of the pieces which are contained in this volume. Even the criticism on Milton, which was written when the author was fresh from college, and which contains scarcely a paragraph such as his matured judgment approves, still remains overloaded with gaudy and ungraceful ornament. The blemishes which have been removed were, for the most part, blemishes caused by unavoidable haste. The author has sometimes, like other contributors to periodical works, been under the necessity of writing at a distance from all books and from all advisers; of trusting to his memory for facts, dates, and quotations; and of sending manuscripts to the post without reading them over. What he has composed thus rapidly has often been as rapidly 'printed. His object has been that every Essay should now appear as it probably would have appeared when 'it was first published, if he had then been allowed an additional day or two to revise the proof-sheets, with the assistance of a good library. He also saw that the war must be chiefly a naval war. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Men, Women, and Books, Vol. 1 of 2: A Selection of Sketches, Essays, and Critical Memoirs, From His Uncollected Prose Writings Should anything else in the impulsive portions of those essays, which were written when he was young, appear a little out of the pale of recognized manners, in point of style and animal spirits, the new reader will be good enough to understand, what old ones have long been aware of, and grown kind to, - namely, that the writer comes of a tropical race; and that what might have been afi'ectation in a colder blood, was only enthusiasm in a warm one. He is not con scious. However, of having suffered anything to re main, to which a reasonable critic could object. He has pruned a few passages, in order that he might not seem to take undue advantage of an extempore or anonymous allowance and in later years, particularly when seated on the critical bench, he has been pleased, and perhaps profited, in conforming himself to the customs of the court. But had he attempted to alter the general spirit of his writings, he would have belied the love of truth that is in him, and even shown himself ungrateful to public warrant. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essays, Critical and Political, Vol. 1 The essays here collected were written many years ago, but they are concerned with matters - such as the merits of great writers - which never grow old. It is on that ground I have thought it worth while reprinting them. In each case I have given the date of the earlier publication that any of their contem porary references may be understood. The prisoner who was asked if he had anything to say why sen tence should not be passed on him for the crime of which he had been convicted, said that he hoped his lordship would take into consideration the youth of his counsel. It would be foolish to claim that these essays were early essays, and therefore en titled to clement criticism. The judgments expressed were the opinions of a younger man than the writer of this preface, as the dates frequently show, but although the latter might alter some of the criticisms, he on the whole agrees with these more youthful utterances. He has to thank the manager of the Times for his permission to reproduce two of the essays con. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essays, Historical and Literary, Vol. 1 of 2: Scenes and Characters in American History The material in this volume was intended, by the Author, to be embodied in a greater work, A History of the American People. Many of these chapters were given by him as lectures in every part of our broad country, always enlarging and strengthening the bond of friendship with his 'people - who freely gave him such personal opinions, letters, and private documents as aided him in perfecting his historical work. Some of these letters, of especial significance, I have here included as notes. Through the courtesy of D. Appleton Company, I am enabled to reproduce in the essays Charles Lee, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, Andrew Jackson, and Daniel Webster - biographical passages written by the Author for the Encyclopaedia of American Biography. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Critical and Miscellaneous Essays, Vol. 1 of 7: Collected and Republished; First Time, 1839; Final, 1869 Except by name, Jean Paul Friedrich Richter is little known out of Germany. The only thing connected with him, we think, that has reached this country, is his saying, imported by Ma dame de Stael, and thankfully pocketed by most newspaper critics Providence has given to the French the empire of the land, to the English that of the sea, to the Germans that of - the air!' Of this last element, indeed, his own genius might easily seem to have been a denizen; so fantastic, many coloured, far-grasping, everyway perplexed and extraordinary is his mode of writing. To translate him properly is next to impossible; nay, a dictionary Of his works has actually been in part published for the use of German readers These things have restricted his sphere Of action, and may long restrict it, to his own country: but there, in return, he is a favourite of the first class studied through all his intricacies with trustful ad miration, and a love which tolerates much. During the last forty years, he has been continually before the public, in various capacities, and growing generally in esteem with all ranks of critics till, at length, his gainsayers have either been silenced or convinced; and Jean Paul, at first reckoned half-mad, has long ago vindicated his singularities to nearly universal satis faction, and now combines popularity with real depth of endow ment, in perhaps a greater degree than any other writer; being second in the latter point to scarcely more than one of his con temporaries, and in the former second to none. This book was released on 2015-07-08 with total page 534 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from English Critical Essays (Nineteenth Century) The essays here brought together are meant to illustrate English literary criticism during the nineteenth century. A companion volume representative of Renaissance and Neo-classic criticism will, it is hoped, be issued at a future date. Meanwhile this volume may well go forth alone. For the nineteenth century forms an epoch in English literature whose beginnings are more clearly defined than those of most literary epochs. The publication of the Lyrical Ballads in 1798, and of Wordsworth's Preface to the second edition in 1800, show the Romantic Movement grown conscious and deliberate, with results that have coloured the whole stream of English poetry and criticism ever since. The greater part of the present collection deals with general principles rather than with criticisms of individual books or authors. The nineteenth century, having discarded the dogmas and 'rules' of Neo-classicism, had perforce to investigate afresh the Theory of Poetry, and though no systematic treatment of the subject in all its bearings appeared, some valuable contributions were made, the most notable of which came from the poets themselves.
