Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In response to the need for a reliable and valid assessment tool, the Schedule for Oral Motor Assessment (SOMA) was designed. It was developed and validated on a large sample of normally developing infants as well as infants with clinically significant oral motor dysfunction. The SOMA is simple to administer and quick to score, and can be performed in the clinic, nursery, school or the child?s home. It entails the presentation of a range of tastes and textures to the infant in order to elicit a full range of each oral motor challenge categories, ranging from liquid through to chewable solids. Specific oral motor behaviours are rated for each oral motor challenge category. Responses are summed to obtain a score for each category, enabling the speech and language therapist to distinguish those infants with normal oral motor function from those with oral motor dysfunction.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Louise Cummings provides a comprehensive introduction to speech and language therapy which will give SLT students an excellent starting point for a wide range of communication impairments. The Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists estimates that 2.5 million people in the UK have a communication disorder. Of this number, some 800,000 people have a disorder that is so severe that it is hard for anyone outside their immediate families to understand them. In Clinical Linguistics, Louise Cummings provides a comprehensive introduction to speech and language therapy which will give SLT students an excellent starting point for a wide range of communication impairments. In chapters that are dedicated to the discussion of individual communication disorders, Cummings argues that no treatment of this area can reasonably neglect an examination of the prevalence and causes of communication disorders. The assessment and treatment of these disorders by speech and language therapists are discussed at length.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Communication disabilities are common, although their precise nature and degree of severity vary greatly among individuals. They are among the most handicapping of disabilities because they isolate a person and in so doing restrict social, educational, and occupational opportunities. One of the purposes of this book was to bring together theoretical, practical, and clinical knowledge from several disciplines that bear on language and communication into some reasonably accessible form. The intent is to provide a broad and multi-faceted view of language development and language disorders. Thus, contributions from education, linguistics, psychology, pediatrics, psychiatry, neurology, neuropsychology, and speech therapy are included. They describe our current knowledge of language development, suggest classifications for language pathology, outline what is known of the epidemiology of language difficulties, consider assessment and therapy, alternative communication systems and the impact of the new technology on communication aids. The variety of perspectives that it provides will make it particularly useful to the range of specialists who are concerned with the development of communication skills and language disorders.
