Book excerpt: This work covers practice and procedure in the High Courts, the Regional Tribunals, the circuit courts, the circuit tribunals, the district courts and the community tribunals in Ghana. The author elucidates the structures of these institutions, and the relationships between them. He stresses the importance of the district courts, and community tribunals which remain for the most part unrecognised - undeservedly so, he maintains, since they form the building blocks of the Ghanaian legal system and a training ground for the country's lawyers. He discusses the role of the magistrate and the need for better magisterial guidance to make these courts effective.

Hence, the title Criminal Procedure: Principles, Rules and Practices. In the first part, the book gives a succinct summary of the ideal procedure should the law be strictly complied with and the (political and economic) challenges in the administration of the criminal justice. For the main part, reproducing the relevant provisions of the law the book discuses the principles and the law on Criminal Procedure comprehensively. Court decisions are reproduced and discussed in order to show the practice and trends in the interpretation and application of the law. The only binding decisions in our legal system are decisions of the House of Federation on matters of constitutional interpretation and the Federal Supreme Court Cassation Division decisions by at least five judges, of which there are very few to refer to. The book approaches Criminal Procedure as a process; thus, it chronologically discusses the steps from crime reporting to the police to prosecution, trial and post judgment remedies. The comments on the law are intertwined with the discussion on the application of the law by the police, the prosecution office and the courts.

Book excerpt: Criminal Law Perspectives: From Principles to Practice is an engaging introduction to the criminal law in New South Wales, Victoria, the Australian Capital Territory and the Commonwealth Criminal Code. It takes a comparative approach to the law in these jurisdictions, focusing on prevalent summary offences, substantive federal offences and criminal procedure. Complex concepts are explained and contextualised by linking them to practical applications. Each chapter is supported by tools for self-assessment: review questions; case boxes summarising and extracting key historical and contemporary cases; and longer, narrative end-of-chapter problems that promote student engagement and help students develop problem-solving skills and independent thinking. Criminal Law Perspectives explores the development of criminal law principles in Australia, and provides a comprehensive and accessible overview of criminal law for students studying in the area for the first time.
