Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are many reasons for writing a book; this one was conceived and devel oped mainly for two. First, a new area has emerged from within the forensic sciences-that of forensic phonetics. As with all new specialties, it is necessary to define it, identify its boundaries, justify its importance and compile a list of the elements it encompasses. This book attempts to outline these several rela tionships. Second, over the past decade I have become fascinated with forensics in general and the rapidly expanded subarea of forensic phonetics in particular. Admittedly, the latter field is one that is not as yet sufficiently appreciated-and much more needs to be known about its nature and extent. Yet, I have found it to be a most enjoyable area of study and my attempts to describe its domains were quite informative. It was especially interesting to struggle with the interfaces between forensic phonetics and related fields, and discover how they overlap. Only a few comments will be made about the book's contents here in the preface. For one thing, they are described in some detail in the first chapter.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book seeks durable solutions for tax crime and is a great resource for the development of knowledge, policy and law on tax crime. The book uniquely blends current practice with new approaches to countering tax crime. With insights from the EU-funded project, PROTAX, which conducts advanced research on tax crimes, the book comparatively analyses the EU's tax crime measures and the Ten Global Principles (TGPs) on fighting tax crime by the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). The study critically examines how the TGPs can serve as minimum standards for the EU to counter tax crime such as tax evasion and tax fraud. The study also analyses how the anti-tax avoidance package can be graduated to fight tax crime in the EU. When escalated, the strengths of the EU tax crime measures and TGPs can form a fortress in which criminal law can be empowered to mitigate tax crimes with greater effect. The book will be particularly useful for end-user stakeholders such as tax policy makers, LEAs, professional enablers as well as academics and students interested in productive interaction between tax, criminal and administrative laws.

Book excerpt: This book consists of three biographies: Jesse James - Jesse Woodson James is an iconic figure in American history, often romanticized as a daring bank and train robber, a guerrilla fighter, and the notorious leader of the James–Younger Gang. Born on September 5, 1847, in Clay County, Missouri, Jesse grew up in a region known as "Little Dixie," where the culture and values were deeply rooted in Southern traditions. This upbringing played a significant role in shaping his identity and allegiances throughout his life. Lucky Luciano - Charles "Lucky" Luciano, originally born Salvatore Lucania, was a notorious Italian-American gangster who played a pivotal role in shaping the structure of organized crime in the United States. His rise to infamy began with his involvement in the Five Points gang, a prominent criminal group in New York City in the early 20th century. As Luciano climbed the criminal hierarchy, he became instrumental in forming the National Crime Syndicate, a coalition of mafia organizations across the U.S. The Yakuza - The Yakuza were members of large-scale organized criminal syndicates based in Japan, known for their deeply entrenched criminal activities and distinctive cultural identity. Officially referred to as "violent organizations" at the request of Japanese authorities, the Yakuza bear similarities to gangsters or mafia members in the West. The Zodiac Killer - The Zodiac Killer remains one of the most infamous and elusive criminals in American history, a figure who cast a shadow of fear over Northern California in the late 1960s. This unidentified serial killer left a trail of violence and mystery, baffling law enforcement and becoming a notorious fixture in popular culture. To this day, the Zodiac's true identity remains unknown, fueling endless speculation, theories, and attempts by amateur sleuths to solve the mystery.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on both judicial practice and legal theory, this book examines the phenomenon of low acquittal rates in China from the perspective of substantive law and formulates the theory of substantive decriminalization. In response to this pressing phenomenon, the author critically examines the prevailing tendency in the circle of criminal theory in China, which emphasizes criminalization over decriminalization and harm outcomes over behavioral process. The book attempts to think outside the box of procedural law, an approach that has yielded fruitful results but is limited in understanding decriminalization. Instead, it emphasizes the principle of substantive law, grounded in the modesty and restraint of criminal law and the protection of human rights. From the perspective of criminal class theory and criminal policy, the book proposes the theoretical framework of substantive decriminalization, which provides insight into the whole picture of the decriminalization mechanism of China’s civil law and also has great practical relevance to China’s criminal justice. The title will be an important reference for scholars, students and legal professionals interested in the issue of decriminalization, legal theory and Chinese criminal law.

Book excerpt: This book presents the latest and most relevant studies, surveys, and succinct reviews in the field of financial crimes and cybercrime, conducted and gathered by a group of top professionals, scholars, and researchers from China, India, Spain, Italy, Poland, Germany, and Russia. Focusing on the threats posed by and corresponding approaches to controlling financial crime and cybercrime, the book informs readers about emerging trends in the evolution of international crime involving cyber-technologies and the latest financial tools, as well as future challenges that could feasibly be overcome with a more sound criminal legislation framework and adequate criminal management. In turn, the book highlights innovative methods for combating financial crime and cybercrime, e.g., establishing an effective supervision system over P2P; encouraging financial innovation and coordination with international anti-terrorism organizations and multiple countries; improving mechanisms for extraditing and punishing criminals who defect to another country; designing a protection system in accordance with internationally accepted standards; and reforming economic criminal offenses and other methods that will produce positive results in practice. Given its scope, the book will prove useful to legal professionals and researchers alike. It gathers selected proceedings of the 10th International Forum on Crime and Criminal Law in the Global Era (IFCCLGE), held on Nov 20–Dec 1, 2019, in Beijing, China.
