Sergeant Cass Hasty and his partner Barney Stauffer were supposed to go to Sand Head Island to pick up a low level criminal by the name of Tootie McNiff. But when they get there, McNiff has escaped and they find themselves embroiled in the investigation of two tourists blown apart at a beach barbecue. The island has plenty of characters, most of whom are suspects, including a dancer with matrimony on her mind and a violent maniac with a habit of wandering away from the sanitarium as well as an assortment of rich drunks. Hasty's efforts to solve the crime before too many bodies pile up are complicated by the arrival of four Feds more interested in publicity than justice, and not only must he find the murderer, he must determine what the murder weapon was before he can solve the Cabana Murders.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It’s a bad case of stage fright for a stand-up comic with killer material and blood on his hands. Lawrence Lariar was one the most popular cartoonists of the twentieth century. But from the 1940s through the 1960s, he also crafted a line of lean and mean detective and mystery novels under his own name as well as the pseudonyms Michael Stark, Adam Knight, Michael Lawrence, and Marston La France. Lariar now gets his due as a leading artist in hardboiled crime fiction. Manhattan PI Steve Gant is on a busman’s holiday at The Glades, a beachfront cabaret for the rich and famous. The joint is a big break for his childhood buddy Chuck Bond, a rising comic emceeing opening night. Unfortunately, the gagman’s got the sweats. A tabloid rag is ready to kill his career with one story: Chuck’s past as a member of the Kings Highway Kings, a notorious Flatbush wolf pack that terrorized the city years ago. But Chuck’s got an even bigger problem here and now. Headlining songbird Gloria Clark is in his cabana with a knife in her back. Now he wants one small favor from Gant: help him hide her body. Is Chuck being framed? Is Gant a dupe? As bad as it looks, it’s going to get worse. No joke.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Money is the most frequently means used in the legal system to punish and regulate. Monetary penalties outnumber all other sanctions delivered by criminal justice in many jurisdictions, imprisonment included. More people pay fines than go to prison and in some jurisdictions many of those in prison are there because of failure to pay their fines. Therefore, it is surprising how little has been written in the Anglophone academic world about the nature of money sanctions and their specific characteristics as legal sanctions. In many ways, legal innovations related to money sanctions have been poorly understood. This book argues that they are a direct consequence of the changing meaning of money. Considering the ‘meaninglessness’ of modern money, the book aims to examine the history of changing conceptions in how fines have been conceived and used. Using a set of interpretative techniques sensitive to how money and freedom are perceived, the genealogy of the penal fine is presented as a story of constant reformulation in response to shifting political pressures and changes in intellectual developments that influenced ideological commitments of legislators and practitioners. This book is multi-disciplinary and will appeal to those engaged with criminology, sociology and philosophy of punishment, socio-legal studies, and criminal law.

Book excerpt: Among the senior citizens of Palm Beach, legendary Oscar-winning actress Charlotte Graham finds love, murder, and a delightful cozy mystery After fifty years on stage and screen, Hollywood icon Charlotte Graham has gone south for the winter. In the glamorous confines of Palm Beach, Charlotte sips rum cocktails, reunites with friends, and rekindles the flame with a former lover. Eddie Norwood was a legendary conductor of the big-band era, and the man who stole Charlotte’s heart aboard the SS Normandie, a fabulously opulent ocean liner that was sabotaged in 1942. Charlotte and Eddie reconnect at a party to honor the memory of the Normandie, and the old sparks are just beginning to fly when their reunion is interrupted by murder. A jewelry designer has been found dead on the beach, and only Charlotte has the poise, wit, and old Hollywood charm necessary to find the killer—and perhaps a little love along the way. Fans of Conrad Allen’s nautical mysteries will be enchanted by Stefanie Matteson’s ability to recreate the glory days of the old ocean liners. Whether sipping champagne or investigating a murder, Charlotte Graham proves that true glamour stands the test of time. Murder Under the Palms is the 8th book in the Charlotte Graham Mysteries, but you may enjoy reading the series in any order.

Book excerpt: This edited volume brings together the most recent research about various aspects of organized crime and the responses that have developed worldwide as a result to contain serious criminal acts. This book focuses particularly on the way criminal networking and illegal markets have developed during the first two decades of the 21st century. It examines how these developments have influenced the motivations and opportunities to commit organized crime. The volume not only focuses on illegal activities in illegal markets, such as drug and human trafficking, but also addresses organized crime and deviance in various legitimate industries. The contributions were presented at seminars of the Centre for Information and Research on Organized Crime (CIROC), and will be of particular interest to organized crime scholars and researchers, as well as advanced students of criminology across the world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an overview of crimes involving water, including pollution, illegal dumping, and supply chain disruption from a criminological perspective. It examines a multifaceted issue from a comparative policy perspective supplemented with individual case studies to provide insights on the magnitude of the problem as well as possible solutions and policy recommendations. As growing populations and economic sectors continue to put unprecedented pressures on water supplies, the book aims to contribute to a better understanding of the problem in order to ensure the sustainability, long-term viability, and equitable use of this essential resource. The first part of the volume examines criminological and policy perspectives, including an overview of regulatory approaches, privatization of water resources, and the scope of the criminal problem in this area. The second part presents informative case studies from a variety of different regional and social contexts. Finally, the editors present an outlook in policy and enforcement improvements. This work will be of interest to researchers in criminology, criminal justice, public policy, and comparative law, as well as those studying environmental regulations and sustainability. Water, Governance and Crime Issues is a much needed addition to the growing original contributions of green criminology. This volume captures the complex landscape of water crimes, including the numerous disparities and inequalities of there being too much water in some places and too little in others amongst the many complexities. The edited collection also covers conceptual issues (i.e. water as a human right) as well as practical hurdles (i.e. the challenges in keeping statistics on offences) and real world examples. Many of the chapters are likely to introduce readers to new issues and the interplay with a myriad of traditional problems – corruption, organised crime, privatisation, and terrorism. I agree with the editors and authors that water crime issues deserve further scientific study and this provides a solid starting point. -Dr. Tanya Wyatt, University of Northumbria Population growth and urbanization, more frequent droughts due to climate change, the privatization of and unequal access to water resources and increasing water pollution are just some of the contemporary and future challenges relating to water crimes. Water, Governance and Crime Issues speaks to the scientific relevance of water for (green) criminology as well as the policy implications of water crimes. Several of the cases in this edited book refer to countries and regions we do not usually hear about and yet are perfect illustrations of the challenges faced in governing and studying water crimes. -Dr. Lieselot Bisschop, Erasmus School of Law

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many feminists grapple with the problem of hyper-incarceration in the United States, and yet commentators on gender crime continue to assert that criminal law is not tough enough. This punitive impulse, prominent legal scholar Aya Gruber argues, is dangerous and counterproductive. In their quest to secure women’s protection from domestic violence and rape, American feminists have become soldiers in the war on crime by emphasizing white female victimhood, expanding the power of police and prosecutors, touting the problem-solving power of incarceration, and diverting resources toward law enforcement and away from marginalized communities. Deploying vivid cases and unflinching analysis, The Feminist War on Crime documents the failure of the state to combat sexual and domestic violence through law and punishment. Zero-tolerance anti-violence law and policy tend to make women less safe and more fragile. Mandatory arrests, no-drop prosecutions, forced separation, and incarceration embroil poor women of color in a criminal justice system that is historically hostile to them. This carceral approach exacerbates social inequalities by diverting more power and resources toward a fundamentally flawed criminal justice system, further harming victims, perpetrators, and communities alike. In order to reverse this troubling course, Gruber contends that we must abandon the conventional feminist wisdom, fight violence against women without reinforcing the American prison state, and use criminalization as a technique of last—not first—resort.
