Book Synopsis Measuring Arthropod Biodiversity by : Jean Carlos Santos
Download or read book Measuring Arthropod Biodiversity written by Jean Carlos Santos and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-11-11 with total page 600 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book brings together a wide range of sampling methods for investigating different arthropod groups. Each chapter is organized to describe and evaluate the main sampling methods (field methods, materials and supplies, sampling protocols, effort needed, and limitations); in addition, some chapters describe the specimen preparation and conservation, species identification, data collection and management (treatment, statistical analysis, interpretation), and ecological/conservation implications of arthropod communities. The book aims to be a reference for zoologists, entomologists, arachnologists, ecologists, students, researchers, and for those interested in arthropod science and biodiversity. We hope the book will contribute to advance knowledge on field assessments and conservation strategies. Arthropods represent the most speciose group of organisms on Earth, with a remarkable number of species and interactions still to be described. These invertebrates are recognized for playing key ecological roles in terrestrial, freshwater and marine ecosystems. Because of the increasing and relentless threats arthropods are facing lately due to a multitude of human induced drivers, this book represents an important contribution to assess their biodiversity and role in ecosystem functioning and generation of ecosystem services worldwide.

Book Synopsis Insect Behavior by : Alex Córdoba-Aguilar
Download or read book Insect Behavior written by Alex Córdoba-Aguilar and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018-07-19 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Insects display a staggering diversity of behaviors. Studying these systems provides insights into a wide range of ecological, evolutionary, and behavioral questions including the genetics of behavior, phenotypic plasticity, chemical communication, and the evolution of life-history traits. This accessible text offers a new approach that provides the reader with the necessary theoretical and conceptual foundations, at different hierarchical levels, to understand insect behavior. The book is divided into three main sections: mechanisms, ecological and evolutionary consequences, and applied issues. The final section places the preceding chapters within a framework of current threats to human survival - climate change, disease, and food security - before providing suggestions and insights as to how we can utilize an understanding of insect behavior to control and/or ameliorate them. Each chapter provides a concise, authoritative review of the conceptual, theoretical, and methodological foundations of each topic.
Book Synopsis Australian Crickets (Orthoptera by : Daniel Otte
Download or read book Australian Crickets (Orthoptera written by Daniel Otte and published by Academy of Natural Sciences. This book was released on 2007-12 with total page 488 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work began with 12 months of field work in Australia between June 1968 & June 1969. During approx. 46,000 miles of travel the authors obtained data at 905 different localities, & visited all of the major Australian collections. Material in the European museums was examined on the return trip to the U.S. & many types were borrowed later. The National Insect Collection at Canberra subsequently sent their entire collection of crickets for further study & the Univ. of Queensland sent a major part of their collection. This work includes 492 species of which 376 are new. These species are arranged in 85 genera of which 41 are new. Fourteen previously published names are synonymized & 17 names are treated as ¿nomina dubia.¿ Illustrations.
Download or read book Locust written by Jeffrey A. Lockwood and published by Basic Books. This book was released on 2009-04-28 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout the nineteenth century, swarms of locusts regularly swept across the continent, turning noon into dusk, demolishing farm communities, and bringing trains to a halt as the crushed bodies of insects greased the rails. In 1876, the U.S. Congress declared the locust "the single greatest impediment to the settlement of the country." From the Dakotas to Texas, from California to Iowa, the swarms pushed thousands of settlers to the brink of starvation, prompting the federal government to enlist some of the greatest scientific minds of the day and thereby jumpstarting the fledgling science of entomology. Over the next few decades, the Rocky Mountain locust suddenly -- and mysteriously -- vanished. A century later, Jeffrey Lockwood set out to discover why. Unconvinced by the reigning theories, he searched for new evidence in musty books, crumbling maps, and crevassed glaciers, eventually piecing together the elusive answer: A group of early settlers unwittingly destroyed the locust's sanctuaries just as the insect was experiencing a natural population crash. Drawing on historical accounts and modern science, Locust brings to life the cultural, economic, and political forces at work in America in the late-nineteenth century, even as it solves one of the greatest ecological mysteries of our time.
Book Synopsis Cave Ecology by : Oana Teodora Moldovan
Download or read book Cave Ecology written by Oana Teodora Moldovan and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-01-05 with total page 545 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cave organisms are the ‘monsters’ of the underground world and studying them invariably raises interesting questions about the ways evolution has equipped them to survive in permanent darkness and low-energy environments. Undertaking ecological studies in caves and other subterranean habitats is not only challenging because they are difficult to access, but also because the domain is so different from what we know from the surface, with no plants at the base of food chains and with a nearly constant microclimate year-round. The research presented here answers key questions such as how a constant environment can produce the enormous biodiversity seen below ground, what adaptations and peculiarities allow subterranean organisms to thrive, and how they are affected by the constraints of their environment. This book is divided into six main parts, which address: the habitats of cave animals; their complex diversity; the environmental factors that support that diversity; individual case studies of cave ecosystems; and of the conservation challenges they face; all of which culminate in proposals for future research directions. Given its breadth of coverage, it offers an essential reference guide for graduate students and established researchers alike.
