Book excerpt: "The perfect addition to your reference library, this book offers solid, how-to advice on how to overcome numerous obstacles while successfully implementing your quality management system." Richard Bechtold, PhD, President, Abridge Technology. "Getting started is the hardest thing. In my professional experience with CMMI, Susan Hinkle has been the only person I've ever seen to successfully take companies from 0 to maturity level 2 and capability level 3 in a year." Joanne O'Leary, Lead Appraiser. For many organizations, the time, effort, cost, and culture shock associated with implementing a Quality Management System can be overwhelming. With that in mind, I am hoping to share some of my successes so you can borrow ideas, and avoid some of the pitfalls I stumbled upon. This book includes several informative sections such as: the 'make or buy' decision, cultural change, deciding what system to implement and when, and return on investment which you may find exceedingly useful in your decision making and planning. The intent of this book is to explain the realities of what you could encounter when implementing a Quality Management System, and to discuss the things other books and consultants might not necessarily tell you. This book is intended for use by small commercial and government organizations outside the realms of IT, software development and systems engineering.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spanning from 1946 during British colonization to 2023's era of 'economic colonization,' 'Backlash to Today' is a unique historical anthology interwoven with the author's life. It intricately portrays nine decades, capturing the essence of each era through lifestyles, fashion, dance, and music while chronicling significant global and Indian occurrences—disasters, terrorism, assassinations, crimes, deaths, wars, and civil disturbances. Beyond a mere reflection, the book offers a broader philosophical perspective. The author foresees humanity's imminent demise due to irreparable climate change, power-hungry leaders, terrorism causing global instability with economic collapse, the looming specter of nuclear annihilation, and the dread of an untreatable pandemic. It aspires to impart a glimpse of these nine decades to future inheritors of the Earth, whether human or alien. This ambitious work aims to serve as a time capsule akin to the profound significance of the Dead Sea Scrolls, providing a visceral understanding of the times lived and the looming challenges facing humanity.

Book excerpt: While "corridor houses" such as the House of the Tiles at Lerna have provoked widespread discussion about the origins of social stratification in Greece, few settlements of the Early Bronze Age (ca. 3100 to 2000 B.C.) have been thoroughly excavated. This important study integrates the presentation and analysis of the archaeological evidence from a single settlement that flourished on Tsoungiza Hill in the Nemea Valley from the Final Neolithic until the end of the Early Helladic period. The first section details the stratigraphy, architecture, deposits, and ceramics of each of the five major periods represented. The second section contains specialist reports on all aspects of material culture including figurines and ornaments, textiles and crafts, metal analyses, chipped and ground stone, and faunal and palaeobotanical remains.

Book excerpt: This book is a translation of articles written in German by the Austro-Hungarian School of Musketry and appearing in a military journal the previous year. What the War Office translators call 'useful instruction' as employed by a potential enemy power - with whom Britain would find itself at war within three years - covers the handling and deployment of machine guns; the duties of a machine gun commander; concealment and other topics. Illustrated with many detailed maps and diagrams. An invaluable read.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wednesday 22 January 1879 was one of the most dramatic days in the long and distinguished history of the British Army. At noon a massive Zulu host attacked the 24th Regiment in its encampment at the foot of the mountain of Isandlwana, a distinctive feature that bore an eerie resemblance to the Sphinx badge of the outnumbered redcoats. Disaster ensued. Later that afternoon the victorious Zulus would strike the tiny British garrison at Rorkeês Drift. How Can Man Die Better is a unique analysis of Isandlwana _ of the weapons, tactics, ground, and the intriguing characters who made the key military decisions. Because the fatal loss was so high on the British side there is still much that is unknown about the battle. This is a work of unparalleled depth, which eschews the commonly held perception that the British collapse was sudden and that the 24th Regiment was quickly overwhelmed. Rather, there was a protracted and heroic defence against a determined and equally heroic foe. The author reconstructs the final phase of the battle in a way that has never been attempted before. It was to become the stuff of legend, which brings to life so vividly the fear and smell the blood.

Book excerpt: The Anglo-Saxon cemetery at Buckland, Dover, was discovered when a new housing estate was being constructed in 1951. It was excavated by Professor Evison between 1951 and 1953. The cemetery of some 170 graves dates from the late fifth to the middle of the eighth century. Professor Evison's expertise in the study of glass, jewellery and weapons ensures that there is a penetrating analysis of this important site and interesting ideas are proposed for the layout and phasing of the cemetery. A comprehensive discussion of the finds from the graves reveals that, although the Buckland cemetery belongs to the period of pagan tradition of burial with grave goods, there is some evidence of Christian influences and rites. Contact with Frankish territory in France, Belgium and the Rhineland seems to have been maintained throughout the period of use of the cemetery and Frankish grave goods formed an important element in the material culture of the people buried there. However, by the late sixth century local Kentish craftsmen were producing a significant amount of the jewellery found in the graves. Professor Evison places the Buckland cemetery in its local context by examining contemporary finds from other sites in the area around Dover.
