Book excerpt: The unique position of design in the political context of postwar Belgium In the postwar era, design became important as a marker of modernity and progress at world fairs and international exhibitions and in the global markets. The Belgian state took a special interest in this vanguard phenomenon of ‘industrial design’ as a vital political and economic strategic tool in the context of the Cold War and the creation of the European community. This book describes the unique position that design occupied in the political context of postwar Belgium as it analyses the public promotion of design between 1950 and 1986. It traces this process, from the first government-backed manifestations and institutions in the 1950s through the 1960s and 1970s, until design lost its privileged position as a state-backed institution, a process which culminated in the closure of the Brussels Design Centre in 1986, in the midst of the Belgian federalisation process. A key figure in this history is the policymaker Josine des Cressonnières, who played a leading role in the national and international design community and succeeded in connecting very different political worlds through the medium of design.

Le rapport met en lumière comment l’adoption des technologies numériques, conjuguée à d’autres phénomènes mondiaux, transforme la nature du travail en Afrique subsaharienne et pose un défi en même temps qu’elle crée de nouvelles possibilités. Les auteurs montrent que les nouvelles technologies ne sont pas simplement synonymes de destruction d’emplois, comme on le craint généralement, mais qu’elles peuvent permettre aux pays africains de construire un monde du travail inclusif et offrir des opportunités aux travailleurs les moins qualifiés. Pour exploiter ces opportunités, cependant, il est indispensable de mettre en place des politiques publiques et de réaliser des investissements productifs dans quatre domaines principaux. Il faudra notamment promouvoir des technologies numériques inclusives, développer le capital humain d’une main-d’oeuvre jeune, globalement peu qualifiée et qui s’accroît rapidement, augmenter la productivité des entreprises et des travailleurs du secteur informel et élargir la couverture de la protection sociale pour atténuer les risques liés aux bouleversements du marché du travail. Belgian interbellum art is extremely vibrant and diverse. 14/18 – Rupture or Continuity takes a look at Belgian artistic life in the years around the First World War and how it was affected by this event. The Great War was a catalyst of artistic oppositions, leading on the one hand to a Belgian avant-garde that explored new forms and styles, while continuing to uphold a more traditional and established art on the other. Whereas the war experience consolidated an already present style for some artists, for others it constituted a revolution leading to new artistic adventures. L’expérience qui existe au sein de chacun des 93 membres de l’UIHJ est une richesse dont tout le monde doit s’inspirer dans un domaine aussi sensible que l’exécution forcée. Par ailleurs nous constatons dans notre profession d’huissier de justice que notre monde est entouré de la digitalisation et qu’on assiste à une émergence de notions que nous avons du mal à cerner tel que Blockchain, AI, Big Data, Machine Learning... au début ces termes ne nous faisaient pas peur, depuis l’apparition de la justice prédictive, des smart contrat qui s’auto exécutent il est temps pour la profession de réagir. L’ouvrage se veut donc le résultat de cette recherche à travers le monde afin de proposer des pistes et solutions concrètes de quelle manière l’huissier de justice peut-il enrichir la digitalisation dans un monde où on veut le contraire, c’est-à-dire promouvoir la fin des tiers de confiance.
