Book excerpt: The long-time creep behavior of fine-grained (0. 016-mm) Ta-9.11W-1. 91Hf-0. was determined over the temperature range of 2000 degrees to 2600 degrees F (1093 degrees to 1426 degrees in a vacuum of 10(exp -8) torr (1.33x10(exp -6 N/m squared). Creep stresses ranged fro 2500 to 20,000 psi (17.5x10(exp 6) to 138x10(exp 6) N/m squared) for test times up to 10,000 hours. At temperatures ranging from 2000 degrees to 2600 degrees F (1093 degrees to 1426 degrees C), stress levels to limit creep to 1 percent in 10,000 hours are 28,000 and 800 psi (193x10(exp 6) and 6x10(exp 6) N/m squared), respectively. The stress dependence of the steady creep rate was 3, and the temperature dependence of steady creep was equivalent to an apparent activation energy of 150 kcal/g-mole (627 450 J/g-mole).

Book Synopsis High-temperature Creep Behavior of a Columbium Alloy, FS-85 by : Robert H. Titran
Download or read book High-temperature Creep Behavior of a Columbium Alloy, FS-85 written by Robert H. Titran and published by . This book was released on 1965 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Creep tests of 1000 hours duration and greater were conducted in the temperature range 20000 to 22000 F on a commercially available columbium alloy (FS-85) in vacuum units designed and built to achieve ultimate pressures of 10%% torr. At a stress level of 10 000 pounds per square inch, FS-85 exhibited moderate creep resistance at 2000 F, 1-percent strain being achieved in 775 hours. At 21000 and 22000 F and the same stress level, the alloy was much weaker, 1-percent strain being achieved in 355 and 50 hours, respectively. The Manson-Haferd linear time-temperature parameter proved moderately successful in predicting the long-time creep lives from relatively short-time creep data, the maximum error between predicted and experimental lives being a factor of 1. 7 and the average error being a factor of 1. 3. The agreement is considered good in view of the large scatter generally observed in long-time high-temperature creep tests. In all cases, however, the observed experimental life was shorter than the predicted life. The nonconservative nature of these predictions may be due in part to the fact that the predictions were based on data obtained at a pressure level of approximately to 10 -6 torr, but the long-time tests to which the predictions are compared were made at a lower pressure level, 10 -8 to 10 -9 torr. Creep tests conducted in the conventional-vacuum units (10 -6 torr) and the ultrahigh- vacuum units under the same conditions of temperature and stress yielded creep curves that are virtually identical for the first few hundred hours but that deviate with increasing test time. The conventional-vacuum tests then showed a reduced creep rate compared with that of the ultrahigh-vacuum tests.

Book Synopsis Short Term Creep Rupture Predictions for Tantalum Alloy T-3 by :
Download or read book Short Term Creep Rupture Predictions for Tantalum Alloy T-3 written by and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page 8 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A knowledge of the short term creep rupture behavior of Tantalum alloy T-111 is necessary to predict device integrity in the heat source section of Radioisotope Thermoelectric Generators (RTG's) at the end of service life, in the event of a fuel fire. High pressures exist in RTG's near the end of service life, these are caused by gas generation resulting from radioactive decay of the nuclear fuel. The internal pressure exerts a significant hoop stress on the T-111 alloy structural containment member. This paper analyses the short term creep behavior (rupture times up to (approximately)2 x 103 hrs.) of cold worked (CW) T-111 alloy, using the existing data of Stephenson (1967). Corellations for the time to rupture, time to 1% strain and minimum creep rate have been obtained from this data using multivariable linear regression analysis. These results are compared to other short term rupture data for T-111 alloy. Finally, at the stress/temperature levels relevant to the RTG fuel fire scenario near the end of service life, the rupture time correlation for T-111 alloy predicts a rupture time of approximately 100 hrs. 10 refs., 3 figs., 1 tab.
