Book excerpt: Excerpt from Presbyterianism: Its Principles and Practice The Presbyterian Church has no denominational Shibboleth with which to rally the masses, - which is both an advantage and a disadvantage. The advantage gained is that it prevents Presby terianism from being narrow and sectarian, but it is at a distinct disadvantage in contending with the bigot characterized by intense sectarian propaganda and proverbial zeal. The task of Presby terianism is to produce a loyal, intelligent membership, stalwart in faith and character, yet liberal towards all evangelical denomina tions. This attempt to accomplish the impossible is measurably successful in cultivating catholicity on the one hand and denomina tional loyalty on the other. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Presbyterianism It will be seen that the distinction to which we have been referring is one which turns purely upon questions of church polity. Some of these indeed may be closely associated with points of doctrine, and in many cases it will be found that prin ciples of doctrine and polity easily act and react on one another Yet in the threefold distribution just referred to, we shall find churches under all the three, not only thoroughly agreed on certain fundamental doctrinal truths, but also accepting the same or similar Confessions. For example, Calvinists in doctrine may be found quite consistently placing themselves under a Prelatical, or a Congregational, or a Presbyterian form of church govern ment. Arminians may be met with under any of the three divisions. There is no reason Why those entertaining Baptist views should in their church polity be Congregationalists rather than Prelatists or Presbyterians In reference purely to matters of church polity are the distinctions made to which we here refer. The difference between these three may in general terms be stated to lie in the representation which they give respectively of the parties in whom church power is vested. In Prelatical churches the clergy rule, the church courts, both inferior and superior, being purely clerical. In Congregational churches, the members of the local church rule, there being no church courts proper as distinguished from the general meeting of the congregation. In Presbyterian churches, the representatives of the people rule in church courts variously graduated, and having'their membership drawn from both the clerical and the lay elements, ruling elders sitting with ministers of the Word in the exercise of the govern ment of the church. In Canada the negotiations for uniting the Methodist, Congregational, and Baptist Churches have reached an advanced stage. In Australia the same denominations are approaching each other with a view to union; and in that colony - most remark able phenomenon of all - negotiations for union have been opened between the Presbyterian and Anglican Churches. In New Zealand there is a movement for union between the Methodists, Baptists, and Presbyterians of the colony. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Brief History of the Bible Presbyterian Church and Its Agencies: Maintaining the True Spiritual Succession of American Presbyterianism in Doctrine and Life, in Worship and Government The Westminster Confession of Faith was born out of loyalty to the Bible. It is not the sole possession of any one church group but it has been since its birth the operating standard of the historic Presbyterian Church. From olden days the Presbyterian Church recognized the Confession to be a faithful summary of the great doctrines of the Bible. Presbyterian doctrinal standards include the Westminster Confession of Faith, and the Larger and Shorter Catechisms. These are three state ments, varying in form, fullness, and purpose, of the same creed. They are known as the West minster standards because the famous Assembly of divines that framed them held their sessions in England's great Abbey of Westminster. The Westminster Assembly Was a representative body, called by the English Parliament, made up of one hundred and twenty-one divines, eleven lords, twenty commoners, from all the counties of England and the Universities of Oxford and Cam bridge with seven Commissioners from Scotland. Many of them jeopardized their livings by accepting the Parliament's appointment, and after the Restoration cheerfully sacrificed their earthly all for conscience' sake (smith, E. W., The Creed of Presbyterians, The Westminster Press, 1902, p. The Assembly was a select assembly com posed of scholars, theologians, orators, statesmen men well qualified to voice the deepest religious convictions. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Address to the Ministers, Elders, and Members, of the Presbyterian Church, in the United States We observe Qd - That to the successful maintainance of the truth of God-to union of effort in its maintainance, creeds, confessions of faith, are indispensable. It is readily conceded that the Bible is the only infallible rule of faith and practice - the ultimate stand ard by which every doctrine and every spirit must be tried. But_it is well known that men interpret the Bible very differently, and that all the errorists that have ever disturbed the Church have pro fessed to receive it as their text-book. The Arian, the Socinian, thepelagian, and the Arminian, if you believe them, all find their several systems in the Bible - so that a simple profession of faith in the Bible it appears is a very vague matter; and something more definite and explicit is evidently necessary to ascertain the religious sentiments of men. In order to this, under the circumstances of the case, there must be' a resort to the use of formularies containingthe leading and distinguishing doctrines of the Bible, expressed in language easily understood. In no other way amid the multiplicity of religious sects that exist, is it possible to know what are men's views of divine truth; and in no other way can that harmony in counsel and union in action which are necessary to the defence and propagation of that truth be secured. Accordingly the Church has never been without her confession of faith, her avowed creed. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Presbyterian Standard, Vol. 49: January 4, 1928 On the other hand, the small church has to adapt _the same plan to meet exactly opposite conditions. There is this difference, however: The large church, as a rule, possesses the ability to adapt the plan to meet its needs, whereas the small church, lacking this leadership, either does not try to use the plan or fails in the attempt. This article plans to give some suggestions to a small church in its effort to make the men-of-the-church a success. There is but little question but that the Assem bly Plan for the men-oi-the-church must be adapted to suit a small church. And, there is just as little question that it can be done. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The American Presbyterian creed up until the second half of the twentieth century has been the confessional tradition of the Westminster Assembly (1643-48). Presbyterians in America adopted the Westminster Confession and Catechisms in 1729 through a compromise measure that produced ongoing debate for the next hundred years. Differences over the meaning of confessional subscription were a continuing cause of the Presbyterian schisms of 1741 and 1837. The Presbyterian Creed is a study of the factors that led to the ninteenth-century Old School/New School schism and the Presbyterian reunions of 1864 and 1870. In these reunions, American Presbyterians finally reached consensus on the meaning of confessional subscription that had previously been so elusive.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Presbyterian and Reformed Review, Vol. 6: October, 1895 With the end of the Thirty Years War the external dangers to the Reformed of Zurich passed away. There was now room for internal development in the Church. The canons Of Dort were never adopted by the Swiss, yet there was no country in Europe outside of Holland, not even France, where they exerted so great a theological influence. This reveals itself and culminates in the Helvetic Consensus, the most scholastic of the Reformed creeds of the continent of Europe. There are many abler and more elaborate works on Pres byterianism written for them. It is for the people - the busy, earnest people, who have neither the time nor the taste for an extensive study of this subject, but who ought to know - at least, in a gen eral way - what Presbyterianism is, What it has been in the past, what it believes and teaches. In his pastoral work the author has often wished for such a book and he earnestly hopes that this one may help supply what he believes to be a real need of the Church. For it he asks the blessing of God and the favor of the people. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
