Book excerpt: All Yesterdays is a book about the way we see dinosaurs and other prehistoric animals. Lavishly illustrated with over sixty original artworks, All Yesterdays aims to challenge our notions of how prehistoric animals looked and behaved. As a criticalexploration of palaeontological art, All Yesterdays asks questions about what is probable, what is possible, and what iscommonly ignored.Written by palaeozoologist Darren Naish, and palaeontological artists John Conway and C.M. Kosemen, All Yesterdays isscientifically rigorous and artistically imaginative in its approach to fossils of the past - and those of the future.

This book was released on 2016-07-29 with total page 497 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Doa Isidora is a story of love, romance, disobedience, disinheritance, betrayal, repentance and reform, of learning to lead a fulfilling life for the benefit of the community. The setting is the quaint Andean town the natives call Pomabamba (Region of Mountain Lions), located in northern Peru. The heroine, fifteen-year-old Ishi Villarreal, is about to pass from girlhood to young womanhood; as is customary, she is expected to be obedient and marry the suitor her parents have already selected for her. Unbeknownst to Teodosio and Dona Luisa, however, Ishi has secretly fallen in love with the aptly named Amador, a dashing young Spanish Don Juan newly arrived in town. Will the hopes and dreams of Ishi's parents become a reality? Or will true love conquer all? *** A native of Pomabamba, Peru, Dorila A. Marting grew up surrounded by the tales of her native city as told by family members and local Quechua storytellers. In Peruvian Short Stories, Marting brings these childhood accounts to life with a narrative that is as distinctively authentic as it is universally relatable. "This Peruvian legend has many versions depending on who is telling the story. I will relate to you what I heard a long, long time ago, as a child, from an elderly storyteller Quechua woman named Mama Cunchina." The Cave of Maria Josefa With voices spanning from the small and elderly mouse (the Emigration of Domestic Animals) to the all-encompassing Mama Patcha (Mother Earth), every story is uniquely enchanting while still supporting the overall parable that is weaved throughout the collection. Marting illustrates her memories with the ease of the Quechua storytellers of her youth, and indeed, these accounts of love, loss, family, nature, friendship, and respect are as crucial and resonant today as they were during the inception of Peruvian Folklore. I invite you to navigate to a foreign land and to a foreign culture and enjoy these stories as much as I have." Mary L. Jones, introduction *** These poems are the author's recollections of life in Peru and the United States. Her background in journalism is reflected in her writing style and choice of topics. She worked for nine years for two leading daily newspapers, The Arizona Republic in Phoenix and The Arizona Daily Sun in Flagstaff, Arizona.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1969, the world was shocked by a series of murders committed by Charles Manson and his “family” of followers. Although the defendants were sentenced to death in 1971, their sentences were commuted to life with parole in 1972; since 1978, they have been regularly attending parole hearings. Today all of the living defendants remain behind bars. Relying on nearly fifty years of parole hearing transcripts, as well as interviews and archival materials, Hadar Aviram invites readers into the opaque world of the California parole process—a realm of almost unfettered administrative discretion, prison programming inadequacies, high-pitched emotions, and political pressures. Yesterday’s Monsters offers a fresh longitudinal perspective on extreme punishment.

Book excerpt: Graceful, succinct prose and engaging illustrations trace the evolution of life on Earth out of the blue and back again. Clear and inviting nonfiction prose, vetted by scientists--together with lively illustrations and a time line--narrate how life on Earth emerged "out of the blue." It began in the vast, empty sea when Earth was young. Single-celled microbes too small to see held the promise of all life-forms to come. Those microbes survived billions of years in restless seas until they began to change, to convert sunlight into energy, to produce oxygen until one day--Gulp!--one cell swallowed another, and the race was on. Learn how and why creatures began to emerge from the deep--from the Cambrian Explosion to crustaceans, mollusks to fishes, giant reptiles to the rise of mammals--and how they compare to the animals we know today, in a lively and accessible outing into the prehistoric past that boils a complex subject down to its lyrical essence.

Book excerpt: A Buzzfeed Best Fiction Book of 2017 • An Entropy magazine Best Book of 2017 “Jess Arndt’s Large Animals is wildly original, even as it joins in with the classics of loaded, outlaw literature. Acerbic, ecstatic, hilarious, psychedelic, and affecting in turn, this is an electric debut.” —Maggie Nelson, National Book Critics Circle Award–winning author of The Argonauts Jess Arndt's striking debut collection confronts what it means to have a body. Boldly straddling the line between the imagined and the real, the masculine and the feminine, the knowable and the impossible, these twelve stories are an exhilarating and profoundly original expression of voice. In “Jeff,” Lily Tomlin confuses Jess for Jeff, instigating a dark and hilarious identity crisis. In “Together,” a couple battles a mysterious STD that slowly undoes their relationship, while outside a ferocious weed colonizes their urban garden. And in “Contrails,” a character on the precipice of a seismic change goes on a tour of past lovers, confronting their own reluctance to move on. Arndt’s subjects are canny observers even while they remain dangerously blind to their own truest impulses. Often unnamed, these narrators challenge the limits of language—collectively, their voices create a transgressive new formal space that makes room for the queer, the nonconforming, the undefined. And yet, while they crave connection, love, and understanding, they are constantly at risk of destroying themselves. Large Animals pitches toward the heart, pushing at all our most tender parts—our sex organs, our geography, our words, and the tendons and nerves of our culture.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Monsters explores questions about the central concept of the monstrous: Why do we create monsters? Are they animal, human, both, or neither? Which of our fears and desires do monsters embody? What can monsters tell us about our cultural and historical moments? How do we cope with the monsters that haunt our imaginations—and our societies? Readings by classic poets, contemporary fiction writers, pop culture critics, philosophers, psychologists, occultists, veterinarians, ethicists, historians, and others take up these questions and more. Questions and assignments for each selection provide a range of activities for students to write about vampires, werewolves, zombies, mermaids, serial killers, classic horror movie monsters, and more strange things that go bump in the night. The Bedford Spotlight Reader Series is an exciting line of single-theme readers, each reflecting Bedford’s trademark care and quality. An editorial board of a dozen compositionists at schools with courses focusing on specific themes assists in the development of the series. Each reader collects thoughtfully chosen selections sufficient for an entire writing course—about 35 pieces—to allow instructors to provide carefully developed, high-quality instruction at an affordable price. Bedford Spotlight Readers are designed to help students from all majors make sustained inquiries from multiple perspectives, opening up topics such as borders, food, gender, happiness, humor, language, music, science and technology, subcultures, and sustainability, to critical analysis. The readers are flexibly arranged in thematic chapters, with each chapter focusing in depth on a different facet of the central topic. Instructor support at macmillanlearning.com includes sample syllabi and additional teaching resources.

Book excerpt: It is estimated that at least 99% of every thing that has ever lived is now extinct. From the smallest bacteria, to the largest vertebrate mammals, the variety of life that once existed in the fossilized past is enormous. The animals that walked this planet millions of years ago were as different and distinct then as the diversity of animal life today, yet so much more removed. Many of the long-extinguished species mentioned in this book can only be found in the fossil record. What we do know about these ancient creatures can best be described as astounding and nearly incomprehensible. What we don't know about them, we can only imagine. Many people are familiar with the extinction of the dinosaurs, of the passenger pigeon, the Dodo bird, and the many other species that are threaten by our very existence on this planet. Few of us have been taught the diversity of life in the ancient world. Lesser known species described in this book include the giant bird Phororhacos and Maori, their smaller toothed cousin Hesperornis, the sea lizard Ichthysaur, the great Pterodactyl, its smaller cousins Dimorphodon and Rhamphorhynchus, a variety of well-known dinosaurs, and giant sea turtles. Later chapters include a detailed description on the ancestry of the horse as well as that of the mammoth and mastodon. This book includes an introductory chapter on how fossils are formed, followed by information on the earliest of vertebrates. Several sections are devoted to a diversity of extinct animals of the land, sea and air; followed by a concluding chapter of why animals become extinct. At the end of each chapter are invaluable references and notes pertaining to the location and condition of many of the articles cited within the text. As the director of the American Museum of Natural History, the author had an unusually rich resource of research material available to compile this admirable work. Most of the illustrations come from the rich collection of the American Museum of Natural History, which at the time this book was first published, contained the most complete specimens of fossil vertebrates worldwide.
