Book excerpt: A WW II and Korean War pilot and hero, a patriotic, middle American farmer who'd trusted his government with two sons in Vietnam, and been betrayed in that, after having his farm largely controlled by his government all his life, is in jeopardy of losing his homestead of 150 years. After his death, his sons scramble to hold onto the farm and make sense of all this and each other. A seed that Deke, the middle of three sons, and Barrett, his friend had brought back from Vietnam seventeen years earlier and kept pure, becomes a means of saving the farm, but in the process the hallucinogen from the seed begins to warn them of some imminent catastrophe through raining creatures and Barrett's visions. The plant the government's trying to suppress brings them signs and warnings about what their government's doing, as Barrett begins seeing Vietnamese spirits or "visitors" in the woods and fields when he ingests the stuff. Creature Storms is a rawly told and original work, a grounded human story of three brothers and a blood brother, their love for and struggle with each other, their country, and the sacrifices they make to hold onto their land which they had already risked their lives in war to protect. Politically timely, Creature Storms unfolds on a number of dramatic levels that build into an apocalyptic ending.

Book Synopsis Tornado Alley by : Howard B. Bluestein
Download or read book Tornado Alley written by Howard B. Bluestein and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tornadoes are the most violent, magnificent, and utterly unpredictable storms on earth, reaching estimated wind speeds of 300 mph and leaving swaths of destruction in their wake. In Tornado Alley, Howard Bluestein draws on two decades of experience chasing and photographing tornadoes across the Plains to present a fascinating historical account of the study of tornadoes and the great thunderstorms that spawn them. A century ago, tornado warnings were so unreliable that they usually went unreported. Today, despite cutting-edge Doppler radar technology and computer simulation, these storms remain remarkably difficult to study. Leading scientists still conduct much of their research from the inside of a speeding truck, and often contend with jammed cameras, flash floods, and windshields smashed by hailstones and flying debris. Using over a hundred diagrams, models, and his own spectacular color photographs, Bluestein documents the exhilaration of hair-raising encounters with as many as nine tornadoes in one day, as well as the crushing disappointment of failed expeditions and ruined equipment. Most of all, he recreates the sense of beauty, mystery, and power felt by the scientists who risk their lives to study violent storms. For scientists, amateur weather enthusiasts, or anyone who's ever been intrigued or terrified by a darkening sky, Tornado Alley provides not only a history of tornado research but a vivid look into the origin and effects of nature's most dramatic phenomena.

Book Synopsis Decolonial Animal Ethics in Linda Hogan’s Poetry and Prose by : Małgorzata Poks
Download or read book Decolonial Animal Ethics in Linda Hogan’s Poetry and Prose written by Małgorzata Poks and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-07-28 with total page 153 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Decolonial Animal Ethics in Linda Hogan’s Poetry and Prose is a plea for an urgent redefinition of human-animal relations on the basis of a nonanthropocentric animal ethic embraced by premodern Indigenous communities but depreciated by coloniality. Without decolonial revisions of animal subjectivity and personhood, the animal genocide can never truly stop. It is also a close reading of Linda Hogan’s poetry and prose in search of the coordinates of a decolonized animal ethic which would foster interspecies becoming. Having defined the recurring tropes, motifs, and attitudes that underpin Hogan’s treatment of nonhuman animals, the book moves on to trace the way she depicts the human-animal bond, especially in the face of the destructive anthropogenic impact. The major questions guiding the analysis of Hogan’s oevre are as follows: who are the animals we share our earthly lives with; what can they teach us about ourselves; how can animals guide us toward more sustainable futures; and what are the conditions of possibility of an interspecies, human-animal thriving. This book will be of interest to scholars and students of Indigenous Studies, Decolonial Studies, Animal Studies, Ecocriticism, Anthropocene Studies, as well as readers of Linda Hogan’s literary works.

Book Synopsis In Frankenstein's Wake by : Alison Bedford
Download or read book In Frankenstein's Wake written by Alison Bedford and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2020-12-28 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Just over 200 years ago on a stormy night, a young woman conceived of what would become one of the most iconic images of science gone wrong, the story of Victor Frankenstein and his Creature. For a long period, Mary Shelley languished in the shadow of her luminary husband, Percy Bysshe Shelley, but was rescued from obscurity by the feminist scholars of the 1970s and 1980s. This book offers a new perspective on Shelley and on science fiction, arguing that she both established a new discursive space for moral thinking and laid the groundwork for the genre of science fiction. Adopting a contextual biographical approach and undertaking a close reading of the 1818 and 1831 editions of the text give readers insight into how this story synthesizes many of the concerns about new science prevalent in Shelley's time. Using Michel Foucault's concept of discourse, the present work argues that Shelley should be not only credited with the foundation of a genre but recognized as a figure who created a new cultural space for readers to explore their fears and negotiate the moral landscape of new science.
