L'éducation thérapeutique du patient (ETP), désormais intégrée aux recommandations pour la prise en charge de l'asthme pédiatrique, a montré de réels bénéfices dans le management de la maladie et l'amélioration des critères cliniques. Une des méthodes disponibles pour mesurer l'efficacité de l'ETP est l'évaluation de son impact suer les connaissances des enfants et de leurs parents sur l'asthme et son management. Cependant une analyse préalable de la littérature a montré un manque d'outils standardisés d'évaluation des connaissances pour cette population. Nous avons donc créé trois nouveaux questionnaires en ligne, en fonction de l'âge, appelés les questionnaires PANDA (Pediatric Asthma kNowleDge and manAgement). L'objectif de cette étude était d'évaluer la validité et fiabilité de ces questionnaires. Matériels et méthodes : Les questionnaires ont été examinés par des experts en asthme pédiatrique pour évaluer la validité du contenu et validité apparente. Le niveau de compréhension des questionnaires a également été jugés par les participants. La fiabilité a été mesure par une méthode de test-retest, avec intervalle de 24 heures, utilisant le coefficient de corrélation intra-classe (ICC) pour chaque thématique. Résultats : La validité de contenu et validité apparente ont été validées pour les trois questionnaires PANDA avec une bonne faisabilité et un niveau de compréhension adapté. Sur 486 participants ayant donné leur consentement, 26 enfants, 17 adolescents et 41 parents ont complété le questionnaire deux fois. Les ICC mesurés étaient tous supérieurs à 7,7 pour les scores totaux et supérieurs à 0,5 pour chaque thématique. La fiabilité est donc acceptée pour l'ensemble des questionnaires PANDA. Conclusion : La validité des questionnaires PANDA a été établie, avec un niveau de compréhension jugé approprié, par les experts et les participants. Les questionnaires PANDA ont démontré être des outils valides et fiables dans l'évaluation des connaissances des enfants et de leur famille, sur l'asthme et son management.

The 2010 Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act required the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) to enlist the Institute of Medicine (IOM) in examining pain as a public health problem. In this report, the IOM offers a blueprint for action in transforming prevention, care, education, and research, with the goal of providing relief for people with pain in America. To reach the vast multitude of people with various types of pain, the nation must adopt a population-level prevention and management strategy. The IOM recommends that HHS develop a comprehensive plan with specific goals, actions, and timeframes. Better data are needed to help shape efforts, especially on the groups of people currently underdiagnosed and undertreated, and the IOM encourages federal and state agencies and private organizations to accelerate the collection of data on pain incidence, prevalence, and treatments. Because pain varies from patient to patient, healthcare providers should increasingly aim at tailoring pain care to each person's experience, and self-management of pain should be promoted. In addition, because there are major gaps in knowledge about pain across health care and society alike, the IOM recommends that federal agencies and other stakeholders redesign education programs to bridge these gaps. Pain is a major driver for visits to physicians, a major reason for taking medications, a major cause of disability, and a key factor in quality of life and productivity. In some instances, they manage these individuals alone and, in others, the management is shared. For this consensus, the participation of both groups was solicited. The global faculty, consisting of leading authorities on the clinical and scientific aspects of childhood glaucoma, met in Vancouver on July 16, 2013, just prior to the World Glaucoma Congress, to discuss the reports and refine the consensus statements. As with prior meetings, it was a daunting task to seek and obtain consensus on such a complicated and nuanced subject. It is unclear how each of us decides how we practice, and evidence to guide us often is sparse. It is remarkable how few high level studies have been conducted on the management of childhood glaucoma. Hence, this consensus, as with the others, is based not only on the published literature, but also on expert opinion. Although consensus does not replace and is not a surrogate for scientific investigation, it does provide considerable value, especially when the desired evidence is lacking. The goal of this consensus was to provide a foundation for diagnosing and treating childhood glaucoma and how it can be best done in clinical practice. Identification of those areas for which we have little evidence and, therefore, the need for additional research also was a high priority. We hope that this consensus report will serve as a benchmark of our understanding. However, this consensus report, as with each of the others, is intended to be just a beginning. Book excerpt: Bangladesh’s vulnerability to the effects of climate change is well documented; the evidence on the direct relationship between climate change and health focusing on Bangladesh is less so. Global evidence suggests intensification of climate change will increase incidences and variations of infectious diseases. Climate Afflictions contributes to filling this important knowledge gap. It includes a systematic review of existing literature on the relationship between climate change and health, distinguishing between climate change and variability. It establishes the relationship between climate variability and infectious diseases and mental health using household-level data. It also documents changes in climate patterns in Bangladesh over the past 44 years using monthly meteorological data. Overall, the report finds a strong relationship between infectious diseases, mental health, and climate variability. Based on analyses of primary data, it concludes that the prevalence of vector-borne diseases is higher during the monsoon than dry seasons, while the opposite is true for waterborne illnesses. Meanwhile, rising humidity and mean temperature are positively associated with respiratory illnesses. In terms of mental health conditions, while temperature is negatively correlated to depression, anxiety among individuals is likely to increase with temperature and humidity. Irrespective of the season, morbidity and mental health issues are highest in densely populated urban hubs such as Dhaka and Chattogram compared to other areas. The mean temperature in Bangladesh has increased by 0.5°C between 1976 and 2019. Overall, summers are becoming hotter and longer, the monsoon season is extending, and winters are becoming warmer. Consequently, Bangladesh is on the path to losing its distinct seasonality. With global warming progressing faster than initially projected, stresses on human health may be elevated to an extent that can overburden the systems to a point at which adaptation will no longer be possible. Countries susceptible to climate change, like Bangladesh, need to be better prepared.

Considering how biological knowledge and practice are intrinsically related to building a sustainable relationship between nature and human society, the roles of biology education need to be rethought to respond to issues and changes to life in this biocentury.
