Book excerpt: * Takes an interdisciplinary approach to interpreting global civil society * Contributors are some of the leading theoreticians in the field * A sound handbook for activism The term "global civil society" has become a catchphrase of our times. But efforts to define and interpret what global civil society actually is have led to ambiguity and dispute. This major work of scholarship and advocacy pierces through the generalizations and debates. It presents cogent examples of groups within civil society--from the Seattle and Genoa protesters to transnational grassroots movements, such as Slum/Shack Dwellers International--that are creatively meeting the challenges and opportunities of an increasingly interconnected world. The contributors offer clarity and the hope that another world is possible--one in which civil society’s global networks can effectively create a free, fair, and just global order. Scholars, students, and anyone interested in understanding new forces influencing contemporary world politics will want to have this book on their shelves.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A deeply researched international history and "exemplary study" (New York Times Book Review) of how a divided world ended and our present world was fashioned, as the world drifts toward another great time of choosing. Two of America's leading scholar-diplomats, Philip Zelikow and Condoleezza Rice, have combed sources in several languages, interviewed leading figures, and drawn on their own firsthand experience to bring to life the choices that molded the contemporary world. Zeroing in on the key moments of decision, the might-have-beens, and the human beings working through them, they explore both what happened and what could have happened, to show how one world ended and another took form. Beginning in the late 1970s and carrying into the present, they focus on the momentous period between 1988 and 1992, when an entire world system changed, states broke apart, and societies were transformed. Such periods have always been accompanied by terrible wars -- but not this time. This is also a story of individuals coping with uncertainty. They voice their hopes and fears. They try out desperate improvisations and careful designs. These were leaders who grew up in a "postwar" world, who tried to fashion something better, more peaceful, more prosperous, than the damaged, divided world in which they had come of age. New problems are putting their choices, and the world they made, back on the operating table. It is time to recall not only why they made their choices, but also just how great nations can step up to great challenges. Timed for the thirtieth anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, To Build a Better World is an authoritative depiction of contemporary statecraft. It lets readers in on the strategies and negotiations, nerve-racking risks, last-minute decisions, and deep deliberations behind the dramas that changed the face of Europe -- and the world -- forever.

Book excerpt: Twenty-nine leading scholars and executives provide a visionary look at the future of business, propelling past damaging industrial-age values to uncover the key ingredients of humanistic, ecologically sustainable, and intergenerational prosperity. Through the exploration of robust cases and stories packed with deep insight and vital science, this extraordinary collection explores how we can adapt our notions of value, markets, and models of cooperation and collective action to create a world where economies and businesses excel, all people thrive, and nature flourishes. In part I, “The Business of Business Is Betterment,” the contributors show how enterprises today are further developing-and even taking a quantum leap beyond-the multistakeholder logic of “shared value creation.” Part II, “Net Positive = Innovation's New Frontier,” is focused on what companies can and are doing to move away from “doing no harm” to playing an active role in solving environmental, social, and economic problems. The final section, “Ultimate Advantage: A Leadership Revolution That Is Changing Everything,” looks at new leadership paradigms-characterized by unexpected qualities like virtue, love, compassion, and connection-that are crucial to creating engaged, empowered, innovative, and out-performing enterprises. This book is designed to galvanize change and unite a global community of inquiry and action. It establishes the conceptual cornerstones for a new kind of business practice that will lead the way to an equitable, sustainable, and flourishing future.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this book is to introduce you in considerable detail to what we call the ‘co-operative enterprise’, and to explore with you the broader question of why co-operatives are important in today’s world. This is not a “how to” book, in the normal sense. It is however (we hope) an excellent foundation upon which to broaden your understanding and appreciation of co-operative forms of enterprise, not only in your country - but around the globe. You will learn why co-operation works and also see why sometimes it may not work, and you will learn about best practices and success factors within co-operatives. If you are an employee, a manager, or an elected official within a co-operative, you will also learn about why and how leadership and management effectiveness are different in co-operative forms of enterprise. The book is divided into five parts. The first part is called “Setting the Stage”, and contains two chapters. The first chapter introduces the reader to the nature of co-operation, while the second chapter looks at the evolution of co-operation all the way from social movements to business systems of enterprise. The second part is entitled “How Co-operatives Are Different” and begins by presenting what we call the “co-operative value proposition”. The third and fourth chapters provide details on the difference between the co-operative sector, the private sector, and the public sector. Chapter Five describes why and how leadership and management effectiveness are different in a co-operative. The third part is entitled “Co-operatives Today” and it includes three chapters. Chapter Six describes “National and International Co-operative Development”, and Chapter Seven looks at the role co-operatives have played and are playing in “Wealth Creation, Community Development ,and Poverty Reduction” around the globe. The last chapter in this section describes the “Pivotal Role for Government in Enabling Development.” Part Four is entitled “Building a Better World” and it includes three chapters. The first chapter, Chapter Nine is entitled “Some Strategies and Tactics for Success”. Chapter Ten is entitled “Towards a World Vision for Co-operatives”. Chapter Eleven is “The Challenges and Opportunities Ahead”, and it invites and challenges readers - and all co-operators - to seriously imagine what the future might be for co-operative forms of enterprise. No small undertaking to be sure! Just for fun we have included a final part called “Everything Else Co-operative” into which we cram additional co-operative website links and interesting content which we think you might like and which didn’t exactly seem to fit anywhere else. You decide! We also include some of our parting after thoughts (post scripts) in this section.

Our job is to excite students and adult learners about the world, to help them see the role that they can play in making society more equal and more just, to express their ideas powerfully, to see that social and historical materialism studies is about real people’s lives and about their relationship to each other and to nature to be enlightened. No matter how long the night, the day is sure to come. Transformation is only valid if it is carried out with the people, not for them…Liberation is like a childbirth, and a painful one. The person who emerges is a new person, no longer oppressor or oppressed, but a person in the process of achieving freedom… is only the oppressed who, by freeing themselves, can free their oppressors. The age of nations is past. The task before us now. If we would not perish, it is to shake off our ancient prejudices and to build the earth. You can be the most beautiful person in the world and everybody sees light and rainbows when they look at you. But if you yourself don’t know it, all of that doesn’t even matter. To achieve a new and better order of society, the oppressed working class need not allow their oppressors to represent them in parliament. To decide which member of the ruling class is to repress and crush the people through parliament is the real essence of to realize the dictatorship character in the parliament. Dictatorship is a rule based directly upon force and unrestricted by any laws. The role of the oppressed societies need to be organized for the necessity of revolution to defeat dictatorship’s ideology as it can never be solved by reformation according the revolutionary theory. What we achieve inwardly will change outer reality. Most people are not achieving their dreams because they are living in their fears. Achievement is the product of conscious decisions and action that can challenge the tragedy of life. Action, clarity. dare create the achievement of the required goal.

Book excerpt: Part 1 in "The Future of" series covers the fundamentals of personal information management (PIM) and then explores the seismic shift, already well underway, toward a world where our information is always at hand (thanks to our devices) and "forever" on the web. Part 2, "Transforming Technologies to Manage Our Information," provides a more focused look at technologies for managing information. The opening chapter discusses "natural interface" technologies of input/output to free us from keyboard, screen, and mouse. Successive chapters then explore technologies to save, search, and structure our information. A concluding chapter introduces the possibility that we may see dramatic reductions in the "clerical tax" we pay as we work with our information. Focus in this concluding Part 3 to the series shifts to the practical and to the near future. What can we do, now or soon, to manage our information better? And, as we do so, how might we build a better world? Part 3 is in three chapters: Chapter 10. Group Information Management and the Social Fabric in PIM. How do we preserve and promote our PIM practices as we interact with others at home, at school, at work, at play and in wider, even global, communities? Chapter 11. PIM by Design. What principles guide us? How can developers build better tools for PIM? How can the rest of us make better use of the tools we already have? Chapter 12. To Each of Us, Our Own concludes with an exploration of the ways each of us, individually, can develop better practices for the management of our information in service of the lives we wish to live and toward a better world we all must share.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Envisioning what we need, when it doesn’t yet exist: this, Thomas Fisher tells us, is what design does. And if what we need now is a better world—functioning schools, working infrastructure, thriving cities—why not design one? Fisher shows how the principles of design apply to services and systems that seem to evolve naturally, systems whose failures sometimes seem as arbitrary and inevitable as the weather. But the “invisible” systems we depend on for our daily lives (in education, politics, economics, and public health) are designed every bit as much as the products we buy and the environments we inhabit—and are just as susceptible to creative reimagining. Designing Our Way to a Better World challenges the assumptions that have led to so much poor performance in the public and private realms: that our schools cannot teach creativity, that our governments cannot predict the disasters that befall us, that our health system will protect us from pandemics, that our politics will remain polarized, that our economy cannot avoid inequality, and that our industry cannot help but pollute the environment. Targeting these assumptions, Fisher's approach reveals the power of design to synthesize our knowledge about the world into greater wholes. In doing so, this book opens up possible futures—and better futures—than the unsustainable and inequitable one we now face.

Book excerpt: In 2052: A Global Forecast for the Next 40 Years (Chelsea Green, 2012), Jorgen Randers draws on his own experience in the sustainability area, global forecasting tools, and the predictions - included in the book as 'Glimpses' - of more than thirty thought leaders to guide us through the future he feels is most likely to emerge towards the middle of the century. At a meeting of 25 of the 'Glimpse' authors in Cambridge in October 2013, each participant was invited to present a 'great idea' (or thought, or development or fact) that they believed could improve on world developments over the next forty years. Disrupting the Future - Great ideas for Creating a Much Better Future is the result of this process and is a remarkable collection of ideas and proposals by a diverse set of thought-leaders, each of which has responded in their own creative way to Jorgen Randers' concluding challenge in 2052: 'Please help me make my forecast wrong. Together we could create a much better world.'

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the three major religions of the West, God is understood to be a being whose goodness, knowledge, and power is such that it is impossible for any being, including God himself, to have a greater degree of goodness, knowledge, and power. This book focuses on God's freedom and praiseworthiness in relation to his perfect goodness. Given his necessary perfections, if there is a best world for God to create he would have no choice other than to create it. For, as Leibniz tells us, 'todo less good than one could is to be lacking in wisdom or in goodness.' But if God could not do otherwise than create the best world, he created the world of necessity, not freely. And, if that is so, it may be argued that we have no reason to be thankful to God for creating us, since, as parts ofthe best possible world, God was simply unable to do anything other than create us - he created us of necessity, not freely. Moreover, we are confronted with the difficulty of having to believe that this world, with its Holocaust, and innumerable other evils, is the best that an infinitely powerful, infinitely good being could do in creating a world. Neither of these conclusions, taken by itself, seems at all plausible. Yet each conclusion appears to follow from the conception of God nowdominant in the great religions of the West.William Rowe presents a detailed study of this important problem, both historically in the writings of Gottfried Leibniz, Samuel Clarke, Thomas Aquinas, and Jonathan Edwards, as well as in the contemporary philosophical literature devoted to the issue. Rowe argues that this problem is more serious than is commonly thought and may require some significant revision in contemporary thinking about the nature of God.
