Book excerpt: A call to create your own magical practice by understanding magical correspondences, incorporating your own lived experiences and ancestry, and applying intuitive insights. Crafting your own magic is a personal and fluid journey, and you won’t find scripted spells and rituals within these pages. Instead, you’ll find a collection of pathways to a magical practice rooted in your lived experience and the relationships you form in seen and unseen realms. Here, witch, intuitive energy healer, and death-worker Cassie Uhl will share techniques to hone your inherent intuitive abilities, personal experiences, and practices—all of which she encourages you to modify to suit your needs. Your magical practice and the path that shapes it will be as unique as you are, as it should be. Uhl walks you through crafting your own magic using the elements as guideposts: air, on developing intuition; fire, on magic in relationship; water, on correspondences; earth, on ethics and ancestry; and spirit, on bringing it all together. What crafting your own magic looks like for you will be personal and fluid. Where would you turn to seek inspiration, community, means, and modes to craft your magic? Perhaps you would shift inward to the trees, flowers, birds, or invisible in-between spaces. There will likely be parts of your magical practice that no one but you will be able to define as true. For these reasons, parts of crafting your own magic may feel uncomfortable. From these places of discomfort, not knowing, and becoming, your magical practices can flourish.

How can you make sure you get it? Or rather, how can you convince others to give it to you? Almost every interaction involves negotiation, yet we often miss the cues that would allow us to make the most of these exchanges. In Getting (More of) What You Want, Margaret Neale and Thomas Lys draw on the latest advances in psychology and behavioral economics to provide new strategies for negotiation that take into account people's irrational biases as well as their rational behaviors. Whether you're shopping for a car, lobbying for a raise, or simply haggling over who takes out the trash, Getting (More of) What You Want shows how negotiations regularly leave significant value on the table—and how you can claim it.

Book excerpt: Magi is the story of a man who believes that he understands the world he lives in and rejects ideas about "Alien Conspiracies", and sets out to prove his own assumption that cattle mutilations in the Colorado Rockies are the actions of a secret government program that is testing biological agents for the development of weapons. His life converges with other people who are firmly entrenched in the world of alien/human interaction and his world view is changed forever as he comes face to face with this new reality that he stumbles upon. The complexity of the problem he discovers is that layers of covert groups are designed to watchdog each other and take necessary actions in order to maintain stability in a world that must be kept secret at all costs. Once he loses the simplicity of what he thought was once the world, he becomes caught between choices. Yet there are deeper insidious problems plaguing the world and these people in these various groups. It isn't clear about who controls what, what the aliens want or even who they are. Why have they not annihilated us and why do they not help us? These ideas and more keep the players firmly locked in a Leontius' Eyes syndrome, unable to tear their selves away and choose how to accept what is so blatantly obvious to the senses and the mind. Out of a central incident arises a clarity of a different kind; that all have been drawn together at this moment to work in concert to support the stasis of this secret existence. The question remains as to whether it has all been a mass manipulation at the whim of a single entity, or if this has been necessary for the continued existence of mankind in general.

Hundreds of people have suggested names of programmers to interview on the Coders at Work web site: www.codersatwork.com. The complete list was 284 names. Having digested everyone’s feedback, we selected 15 folks who’ve been kind enough to agree to be interviewed: Frances Allen: Pioneer in optimizing compilers, first woman to win the Turing Award (2006) and first female IBM fellow Joe Armstrong: Inventor of Erlang Joshua Bloch: Author of the Java collections framework, now at Google Bernie Cosell: One of the main software guys behind the original ARPANET IMPs and a master debugger Douglas Crockford: JSON founder, JavaScript architect at Yahoo! Book excerpt: This fascinating and instructive book offers a revealing, blow-by-blow description of secret, headline-making negotiations in the Middleast, Korea, Africa, and Bosnia, as well as an invaluable guide to conducting such a difficult process of tremendous practical application to a wide variety of conflict resolution professionals. Based on extensive interviews and research with key players at the highest level, this book not only tells some incredibly dramatic stories but shows how to use these demonstrated strategies, skills, improvisational interventions and other techniques. Detailing breakthrough negotiations which brought the Israelis and Palestinians together for the first time in Oslo, built the Gulf War Coalition, ended the great divide between North and South Korea, and terminated the war in Bosnia, the authors employ a compelling narrative and didactic style to explain how to understand and apply sophisticated, field-tested methods of dispute resolution in a variety of situations.
