Book excerpt: "Crabapple Blossoms" draws you into the warm rhythms of Georgia farm life as the Depression came and went. Grace Smith and Sue Hunter skillfully capture the sounds and sights of tobacco cultivation and harvest, games children played using only their imaginations, humorous interactions with family and friends, country church services and funerals for pets. the sisters' account of a time at Berry College illustrates the unique nature of the school where sewing and tractor driving could be part of earning tuition--of a place where young people from farm families could learn skills and earn degrees that would open a new world to them. the stories of teaching school vividly present the problems in the days of few standards, a front row seat for what racial integration meant and some frank--and sometimes sardonic--observations of the often illogical curriculum reforms that will be familiar to anyone who taught or sat in a classroom during the last half century. "In 'Crabapple Blossoms,' Grace Smith and Sue Hunter bring the world of girlhood days on a Georgia tobacco farm, college days at Berry and teaching careers to life. with humor, honesty and style, they tell a unique story--one that captures the changing South in context of school, church and family." --W. Winston Skinner, Newnan, Ga. Writer and historian

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inspiring and practical, this is a lovely resource for anyone looking to grow fruit trees or start an orchard, whether in your garden or as a community project. For centuries, orchards have been a compelling and important part of our landscape. The sight of a fruit tree, blushing in blossom in the spring, and then laden with fresh fruit in the summer and autumn, can be truly enchanting, inspiring folklore and art. Not only do orchards provide bountiful fruit for families and communities, they are also attractive to pollinators such as bees, and make a wonderful habitat for birds. There are many ways of incorporating orchard living into your lifestyle, no matter how busy or short of space you are. Written by esteemed horticulturalist Naomi Slade, this gloriously illustrated resource illuminates the possibilities and enables you to make it a reality – whether you have a few fruit trees already or have always wanted an orchard of your own. An Orchard Odyssey shows you how to plant and care for your trees and suggests fruit trees suitable for different spaces. It also covers the benefits of orchard for conservation and biodiversity, orchard heritage, and the role of fruit trees in garden and landscape design. The guide promotes the 'five trees' principle of orchards, and encourages the reader to embrace the orchards in a way that is personal to them. Packed with practical ideas and inspiration, let this delightful book encourage you to re-engage with tree fruit in new ways: look at it the right way and everyone can have an orchard.

Book excerpt: 'TRULY INSPIRING' Mail on Sunday Now familiar to millions of Gardeners' World fans as Longmeadow (the home of Nigel & Nellie), this is the story of Monty & Sarah Don's early days there. THE JEWEL GARDEN is the story of the garden that bloomed from the muddy fields around the Dons' Tudor farmhouse, a perfect metaphor for the Monty and Sarah's own rise from the ashes of a spectacular commercial failure in the late '80s . At the same time THE JEWEL GARDEN is the story of a creative partnership that has weathered the greatest storm, and a testament to the healing powers of the soil. Monty Don has always been candid about the garden's role in helping him to pull back from the abyss of depression; THE JEWEL GARDEN elaborates on this much further. Written in an optimistic, autobiographical vein, Monty and Sarah's story is truly an exploration of what it means to be a gardener.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Education of a College President" is a personal account of the author's association with M.I.T. for sixty years as student, editor, and administrative officer, including his service as President from 1948 to 1959, and as Chairman of the Corporation. Interwoven with this account of an unusual career at one of the world's leading science-based universities is the story of Killian's excursions into the public sector as the nation's first full-time presidential science adviser, when NASA and our national space program were created and Eisenhower began initial efforts to ban atmospheric nuclear tests and to encourage disarmament. Attention is also paid to his role as the "father of public television." In his memoir, Killian shows how M.I.T. grew from an engineering school offering technical courses to undergraduates into a research university of a unique kind, with a new focus on developing better links between the "two cultures" of science and the humanities. He provides an inside report on the major events and policies of his administration: the establishment of a School of Humanities and Social Science, the rationale for the later formation of a School of Management; and many improvements in the Institute's environment. Following his student days at M.I.T., Killian joined the staff and later became editor of the institute's alumni journal, "Technology Review. In 1939 he became President Karl T. Compton's Executive Assistant. He became Vice President of the Institute in 1943, President in 1948, and Chairman of the Corporation in 1959. James R. Killian has received numerous awards, including the Public Welfare Medal of the National Academy of Sciences, the first Vannevar Bush Award ofthe National Science Board, the Hoover Medal, one earned degree (S.B.) and thirty-nine honorary degrees. He is the author of "Sputnik, Scientists, and Eisenhower and coauthor (with Harold E. Edgerton) of "Moments of Vision," both published by The MIT Press.
