Book excerpt: CRA at 40: Views on the Present and Future of Community Reinvestment celebrates the 40th anniversary of the Community Reinvestment Act through stories of community development, from the perspective of those working on our communities, who bring their knowledge and passion to bear every day in confronting the most critical problems facing communities in need. While many of the other works on this subject focus on policy and academic research, this is a book about real-world experiences told in plain language by those who live them. As we pause to reflect on the 40th anniversary of CRA's enactment, their stories and insights provide a lens for us to see CRA t work, ideas for its future and most importantly, what it means in people's lives. The book is divided into two sections: "Where We Are" and "Where We're Going." Each section features essays from a wide range of professionals, including bankers, consultants, developers, entrepreneurs, nonprofits and policymakers. Their essays incorporate personal stories, observations, facts, statistics, insights and opinions. Individually, each easy provides a snapshot of a particular issue or strategy; collectively, they tell the story of where CRA is today and where it's going into the future. The first section dives into the current landscape of community development, highlighting the core issues that CRA seeks to address and the impact and challenges of today's most common strategies and practices. From stories of a child's first encounter with poverty to critical assessments of our current practices and regulations, these essays offer an honest, unflinching assessment of where CRA work stands, and what it will need in order to move into the future. The second half of the book includes essays which look toward that future and put the spotlight on emerging social issues as well as ideas to modernize aspects of the CRA itself and meet community needs through innovative solutions. Collectively, the essays in this section - on topics ranging from the future of affordable housing to flexible credit practices to new, technology-driven modes of giving - make the case for broadening the reach of CRA activities, in terms of what qualifies, who must comply and how much support is provided. They also make the case for a more progressive approach to community development - one that incorporates manufactured housing, overall community health, technology and improved collaboration among all community stakeholders.

This is also available - updated - thru the CRA Government Publications website and easily readable in any TSO Public Reading Room. I read the predecessor of this in '88-'90 when I was studying tax law in their Montreal TSO when aspiring to be a CRA Auditor...just like Larry Jacobson MBA, CA, of Montreal, of the CRA and later also private practice...because Kim Scott Neufeld, CA, LLB of Winnipeg, who stole my heart and gave me my mind in replacement starting in '87 on Her way to being, while being a dazzling lawyer. To "... collect your darn taxes: MY doctor has to be paid - she does't work for free you know...not in my case, that's for sure." (Neufeld, has the humour gotten worse, or heaven forbid, better? You gave me my mind you know.) Led to me knowing EXACTLY who to call on Dec 20th'94 and Mar 8th'95 about Yank Barry's Small Business Loan fraud scheme (illicit inflation of invoices to create needed funding to survive, and be merely greedy - w/ access to all sorts of family perhaps reasonably-legitimate funding to start his Vitapro Foods). Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book will severely challenge every element of the consensus explanation for the Great Recession. In fact, a book like this, although not necessarily this one, is urgently needed to counter the massive disinformation spread by the Majority Report of the Financial Crisis Inquiry Commission that Congress created in 2009 to investigate the financial crisis of 2007-2009 that led to the Great Recession. Congress handed the Commission a list of 19 directives, including the directive to examine “the global imbalance of savings, international capital flows, and fiscal imbalances of various governments; [and] monetary policy and the availability and terms of credit.” The Commission chairman clearly steered the Commission toward the goal of shifting the blame for the financial crisis from government onto the backs of the private mortgage finance industry consisting not only of banks but including mortgage bankers, insurance companies and the mortgage giants popularly known as Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. The Commission chairman specifically refused to consider any evidence linking the financial crisis and consequential Great Recession that struck the United States but impacted the global economy as well! This book has no agenda other than to present a complete, factual history of the events, conditions and policies that led to the Great Recession. The history will demonstrate that the seeds of the financial crisis were sown during the administration of George Washington and the economic theories spawned during the Great Depression. The overarching thesis is that the Global Financial Crisis and the resulting Global Recession was a perfect superstorm composed of the merger of separate storm systems; notably aggressive welfare activism, the Nation’s “affordable housing” crusade, the zigs and zags of the Federal Reserve’s monetary policies, and the $.9 trillion trade deficit the U.S. accumulated between 1997 and 2007 which former Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke dubbed the “Global Savings Glut” and others labeled the “Global Dollar Glut!”

Book excerpt: Originally published in 1987, this volume filled a notable gap in Scottish urban history and considers the place of Scottish towns in urban life during the 16th and 17th Centuries. The first part of the book is based on studies of individual burghs (Aberdeen, Dundee, Edinburgh and Perth) drawing extensively on archival material. The second part includes a discussion of the pressure put upon the burghs by the town between 1500 and 1650, a process which contributed to the destruction of the medieval burgh and examines the burgh during the Scottish Revolution. The impact of war and plague on Scottish towns in the 1640s is also analysed and much emphasis is given to the relationship between town and country.

Book excerpt: This fascinating work tells the untold story of the role of women in the Civil War, from battlefield to home front. Most Americans can name famous generals and notable battles from the Civil War. With rare exception, they know neither the women of that war nor their part in it. Yet, as this encyclopedia demonstrates, women played a critical role. The book's 400 A–Z entries focus on specific people, organizations, issues, and battles, and a dozen contextual essays provide detailed information about the social, political, and family issues that shaped women's lives during the Civil War era. Women in the American Civil War satisfies a growing interest in this topic. Readers will learn how the Civil War became a vehicle for expanding the role of women in society. Representing the work of more than 100 scholars, this book treats in depth all aspects of the previously untold story of women in the Civil War.

Book excerpt: **Includes test bank and PowerPoint slides for professors who have adopted the text in their course. Contact [email protected] for more information. ** This well-received criminology textbook, now in its third edition, argues that crime must be understood as both a social and a political phenomenon. Using this lens, Marginality and Condemnation contends that what is defined as criminal, how we respond to “crime” and why individuals behave in anti-social ways are often the result of individual and systemic social inequalities and disparities in power. Beginning with an overview of criminological discourse, mainstream approaches and new directions in criminological theory, the book is then divided into sections, based on key social inequalities of class, gender, race and age, each of which begins with an outline of the general issues for understanding crime and an introduction that guides readers through the empirical chapters that follow. The studies provide insights into general issues in criminology, ranging from the historical and current nature of crime and criminal justice to the various responses to criminality. Readers are encouraged and challenged to understand crime and justice through concrete analyses rather than abstract argumentation. In addition to a new introductory chapter that confronts how we define crime, measure crime, and understand and use criminology in this millennium, the third edition provides new chapters examining crime in relation to the environment, terrorism, masculinity, children and youth, and Aboriginal gangs and the legacy of colonialism.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Brookings Institution Press and Harvard University Joint Center for Housing Studies publication The ups and downs in housing markets over the past two decades are without precedent, and the costs—financial, psychological, and social—have been enormous. Yet Americans overwhelmingly still aspire to homeownership, and many still view access to homeownership as an important ingredient for building wealth among historically disadvantaged groups. This timely volume reexamines the goals, risks, and rewards of homeownership in the wake of the housing bubble and subprime lending crisis. Housing, real estate, and finance experts explore the role of government in supporting homeownership, deliberate how homeownership can be made more sustainable, and discuss how best to balance affordability, access, and risk, particularly for minorities and low income families. Book excerpt: "Within the context of the growing demands for ethical, legal, and fiscal accountability in psychosocial practices, Evidence-based practice for social workers: an interdisciplinary approach provides a coherent, comprehensive and useful resource for social workers and other human service professionals to help them: 1) conduct clinical assessments informed by current human behavior science; 2) implement interventions supported by current outcome research; and, 3) engage in evaluation as part of daily practice to ensure effective implementation of evidence-based practices. Rather than depicting evidence-based practice as a simple matching of diagnostic categories with intervention methods, the text encourages critical thinking and flexibility guided by best evidence in order to tailor evidence-based practices to individual client needs. The multidimensional and functional approach to assessment is designed to integrate the use of human behavior knowledge with an analysis of each client's unique experiences. Sample assessment/evaluation instruments (contributed by many leading experts) are provided to help practitioners better understand their use as both assessment and evaluation tools. Practice outcome research is summarized and "best practices" are described in considerable detail. Many case studies and sample treatment plans are provided to help the reader translate clinical research into everyday practice. Overall, EBPSW provides practitioners with a thoroughly researched yet practice-oriented resource for learning and implementing effective assessment, intervention and evaluation methods for a wide array of psychosocial disorders and problems-in-living in adults, children and families"--
