Book Synopsis The Gauge Block Handbook by : Ted Doiron
Download or read book The Gauge Block Handbook written by Ted Doiron and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2014-02-19 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This handbook is a both a description of the current practice at the National Institute of Standards and Technology, and a compilation of the theory and lore of gauge block calibration. Most of the chapters are nearly self-contained so that the interested reader can, for example, get information on the cleaning and handling of gauge blocks without having to read the chapters on measurement schemes or process control, etc. This partitioning of the material has led to some unavoidable repetition of material between chapters. The basic structure of the handbook is from the theoretical to the practical. Chapter 1: basic concepts and definitions of length and units; Chapter 2: history of gauge blocks, appropriate definitions and a discussion of pertinent national and international standards; Chapter 3: physical characteristics of gauge blocks, including thermal, mechanical and optical properties; Chapter 4: a description of statistical process control (SPC) and measurement assurance (MA) concepts; and Chapters 5 and 6: details of the mechanical comparisons and interferometric techniques used for gauge block calibrations. Full discussions of the related uncertainties and corrections are included. Finally, the appendices cover in more detail some important topics in metrology and gauge block calibration.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is rare for a complete biography of an Australian scientist, particularly of an Australian woman scientist, to be published. It is rarer for such a book to be co-authored by an American. Although scientists have written discourses on the history of their discipline, it is most unusual for a scientist to write a full length biography of a colleague in his ?eld. It is also uncommon for a man to write about an Australian woman scientist; most of the work on Australian women scientists has been done by other women. However, these authors, both distinguished researchers in the ?eld of radio astr- omy, became so interested in the history of their discipline and in the career of the pioneer radio astronomer Ruby Payne-Scott that they spent some years bringing this book to fruition. Until relatively recently, Ruby Payne-Scott had been the only woman scientist mentioned brie?y in histories of Australian science or of Australian radio astronomy. This book will be an invaluable resource for anyone interested in these disciplines. Being scientists themselves, the authors explain Payne-Scott’s scienti?c work in detail; therefore, the value and importance of her contributions can, for the ?rst time, be recognised, not only by historians but also by scientists.

Book Synopsis Spectroradiometric Detector Measurements by : Thomas C. Larason
Download or read book Spectroradiometric Detector Measurements written by Thomas C. Larason and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 1998 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The National Institute of Standards and Technology supplies calibrated photodiode standards and special tests of photodetectors for absolute spectral responsivity from 200 nm to 1800 nm. (This service will soon be expanded to 20 μm in the infrared.) The scale of absolute spectral responsivity is based solely on detector measurements traceable to the High Accuracy Cryogenic Radiometer maintained by the National Institute of Standards and Technology. Silicon photodiode light-trapping detectors are used to transfer the optical power unit from this cryogenic radiometer to monochromator-based facilities where routine measurements are performed. The transfer also involves modeling the quantum efficiency of the silicon photodiode light-trapping detectors. A description of current measurement services is given along with the procedures, equipment, and techniques used to perform these calibrations. Detailed estimates and procedures for determining uncertainties of the reported values are also presented.
