Book excerpt: Paid advertising on the internet is now a massive and truly global business, and with every passing day it just keeps on getting bigger. For example, in the first quarter of 2006, internet advertising revenues reached a new high of $3.9 billion and by the end of the third quarter of the same year, this figure had gone past $4 billion. However, in the same Q3 period in 2007, internet advertising revenues surpassed $5.2 billion, setting another new high and continuing the trend of record breaking quarters that has been a constant ever since the Internet Advertising Bureau started keeping records back in 1996.With the ever-increasing worldwide popularity of the internet, this is probably only what you would expect.Nevertheless, moving from $4 billion to $5.2 billion dollars in one year indicates a phenomenal rate of growth, indicating that more and more businesses are wiling to commit ever more substantial proportions of their advertising budgets to promoting their businesses online in order to get their name and products in front of an increasingly discerning internet-connected global audience. And, as they have done for the last few years, Google continue to monopolize and dominate the online advertising industry with their pre-eminent advertising programs AdWords and AdSense. This also continues a trend that was initially established when Google revolutionized web publishing and advertising by turning personal blogs, websites and forums into potential revenue generating centers for individual webmasters, whilst at the same time setting new standards for effective and affordable targeted promotion and advertising. Both of Google’s phenomenally successful programs operate on the basis of what is known as the Pay Per Click (PPC) or sometimes the Cost Per Click (CPC) advertising business model. In simple terms, using PPC involves a website or blog publisher agreeing to carry AdSense ads on their site, whilst an advertiser who is looking to promote their products online approaches Google through the AdWords program.Google then places these ads alongside relevant Google search engine results, as well as on targeted websites and blogs. For example, if an advertiser is selling automobile products, then their adverts will only appear alongside automobile related search results and on websites and blogs that focus on matters pertaining to cars or automobiles. As suggested above, the internet advertising industry is huge, and Google owns a very significant chunk of that market. You can therefore work out for yourself that they must be earning phenomenal amounts of money from the AdWords and AdSense programs. And yet, it is known that Google are now actively looking at introducing other forms of promotion to their advertising business portfolio, which of course raises the question of why it would be doing so, and what types of advertising are they most actively interested in?And this is not some idle rhetorical or 'for interest only' question. What Google decides to do in the online advertising market, you can almost inevitably guarantee everyone will eventually do.Therefore, knowing why Google are doing what they are doing, and the direction that they are moving in should give any savvy internet marketer or online business entrepreneur a clear insight into where online advertising is likely to go over the next two or three years. This, in turn, should enable anyone who is in this situation to position their business to be able to maximize the received advertising revenues as the market continues to develop.

Book excerpt: Most people know that AdSense isn't profitable anymore and that the best days of the whole PPC advertising model have already passed them by. Here's the funny thing though. Everyone I talk to tells me how horrible business is with PPC and how much profits have dwindled, but no one tells me they stopped using it to monetize their site. If AdSense isn't making you money, why do you continue using it? I've long since ditched PPC for my advertising profits, switching instead to CPA. I couldn't be happier.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Just after noon on September 16, 1920, as hundreds of workers poured onto Wall Street for their lunchtime break, a horse-drawn cart packed with dynamite exploded in a spray of metal and fire, turning the busiest corner of the financial center into a war zone. Thirty-nine people died and hundreds more lay wounded, making the Wall Street explosion the worst terrorist attack in U.S. history until the Oklahoma City bombing. In The Day Wall Street Exploded, Beverly Gage tells the story of that once infamous but now largely forgotten event. Based on thousands of pages of Bureau of Investigation reports, this historical detective saga traces the four-year hunt for the perpetrators, a worldwide effort that spread as far as Italy and the new Soviet nation. It also gives readers the decades-long but little-known history of homegrown terrorism that helped to shape American society a century ago. The book delves into the lives of victims, suspects, and investigators: world banking power J.P. Morgan, Jr.; labor radical "Big Bill" Haywood; anarchist firebrands Emma Goldman and Luigi Galleani; "America's Sherlock Holmes," William J. Burns; even a young J. Edgar Hoover. It grapples as well with some of the most controversial events of its day, including the rise of the Bureau of Investigation, the federal campaign against immigrant "terrorists," the grassroots effort to define and protect civil liberties, and the establishment of anti-communism as the sine qua non of American politics. Many Americans saw the destruction of the World Trade Center as the first major terrorist attack on American soil, an act of evil without precedent. The Day Wall Street Exploded reminds us that terror, too, has a history. Praise for the hardcover: "Outstanding." --New York Times Book Review "Ms. Gage is a storyteller...she leaves it to her readers to draw their own connections as they digest her engaging narrative." --The New York Times "Brisk, suspenseful and richly documented" --The Chicago Tribune "An uncommonly intelligent, witty and vibrant account. She has performed a real service in presenting such a complicated case in such a fair and balanced way." --San Francisco Chronicle

Book excerpt: Charles M. Grist is one of the few Vietnam veterans to have served as an enlisted soldier in the Iraq war. In 2004, he volunteered to be the sergeant-in-charge of the Protective Service Detail for an Army Reserve general in Baghdad. Grist and his unit, the C.O.B.R.A. Team, were based inside Baghdads Green Zone, but their travels with the general led them along the deadly roads of Baghdad, to the throne of Nebuchadnezzar in Babylon, and through the picturesque hills of Kurdistan. It was a fast-paced life of high adventure, filled with convoys, mortar or rocket attacks, and the constant threats of ambushes or improvised explosive devices. As a Vietnam veteran, Grist knew that Operation Iraqi Freedom would be his last war. He used his daily journal to record his team's wartime experiences, to document the events that shaped Iraq in 2004, and to preserve the heroic deeds of some of the Army Reserve and National Guard warrior-citizens with whom he served. That journal became the basis for this book.

Book excerpt: 1942, off the port city of St. Nazaire in occupied France. A United States Navy S-class submarine assigned to the Royal Navy lurks just outside the borders of the minefield protecting a German U-boat base. Lieutenant Commander Malachi Stormes patrols close to the minefield entrance and manages to trap and sink three outbound U-boats in one spectacular attack. The U.S. Navy promotes him and gives him command of a new class of submarine, a fleet boat called Firefish. Based in Perth, Australia, the Perth boats are the only American forces capable of hitting the Japanese in the western Pacific. Stormes-- nicknamed The Iceman-- makes it clear that he is willing to take huge chances to achieve results. -- adapted from publisher info.

Book excerpt: This book addresses the hazard of gas explosions in sealed underground coal mines, and how the risk of explosion can be assessed, modeled, and mitigated. With this text, coal mine operators and managers will be able to identify the risks that lead to underground mine gas explosions, and implement practical strategies to optimize mining safety for workers. In six chapters, the book offers a framework for understanding the sealed coal mine atmosphere, the safety characteristics that are currently in place, and the guidelines to be followed by engineers to improve upon these characteristics. The first part of the book describes the importance and characteristics of underground gas mine explosions in a historical context with data showing the high number of fatalities from explosion incidents, and how risk has been mitigated in the past. Chapters also detail mathematical models and explosibility diagrams for determining and understanding the risk factors involved in mine explosions. Readers will also learn about safety operations, and assessments for the sealed mine atmosphere. With descriptions of chapter case studies, mining engineers and researchers will learn how to apply safety measures in underground coal mines to improve mining atmospheres and save lives.
