Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: He was Alfred "Lash" LaRue (1917-1996), star of dozens of films, TV appearances, and over 100 issues of a comic title that sold over a million copies from 1949-1961. Lash Larue was different from other cowboy stars, because he was more likely to bring the bad guy down with his bullwhip than with a gun, in theaters LaRue showed young audiences live demonstrations of his skills (he was even the man who taught Harrison Ford how to use the whip as Indiana Jones), and he was promoted to a starring role after starting off as a sidekick! From 1941-1952 Charles Starrett (1903-1986) played THE DURANGO KID, popular cowboy in over 60 films during the heyday of the Cowboy Star. Paired with a variety of sidekicks and horses, the black-masked hero made the Wild West a safer place. From 1949-1956 THE DURANGO KID hit the comic newsstands, too, and now you can once again (or, for the first time) enjoy these terrific adventures! He was George Francis "Gabby" Hayes (1885-1969), one of the most prolific and well-known western actors of the 20th Century. Although he was in his 40s before he made his first film, Gabby Hayes played good guys and bad guys, but was best known as a sidekick to such Western stars as Gene Autry, John Wayne, Roy Rogers, Randolph Scott, and many more - and for a time was one of the wealthiet and most successful actors in Hollywood. The comic reprints from Calumet History and Hobby are reproduced from actual classic comics, and sometimes reflect the imperfection of books that are decades old. These books are constantly updated with the best version possible - if you are EVER unhappy with the experience or quality of a book, return the book to us to exchange for another title or the upgrade as new files become available.

Book excerpt: Amelia Darcy has no interest in marrying well. Her heart belongs to the sky and the dirigibles of brass and steel that swoop over Victorian England. But when her father, an eccentric inventor, dies, the Darcy siblings are left with scrap metal—and not a penny to their names. Their only hope to save the family name and fortune is to embark on a contest to discover an invention of historical importance in honor of Queen Victoria. Armed with only her father’s stories of a forgotten da Vinci workshop, a mechanically enhanced falcon, and an Italian cook, Amelia takes flight for Florence, Italy. But her quest is altered when her kitecycle crashes into the air ship of ex–Air Marshal—and scandalous dime novel hero—Tucker Gentry. Challenged by political unrest, a devious sky pirate, and their own sizzling attraction, Amelia and Tuck are dragged into an international conspiracy that could change the course of history…again.

He died in a tragic fire in 1942, but his legend remained strong, and in 1951-1952 he starred in his own comics series. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Focusing especially on American comic books and graphic novels from the 1930s to the present, this massive four-volume work provides a colorful yet authoritative source on the entire history of the comics medium. Comics and graphic novels have recently become big business, serving as the inspiration for blockbuster Hollywood movies such as the Iron Man series of films and the hit television drama The Walking Dead. But comics have been popular throughout the 20th century despite the significant effects of the restrictions of the Comics Code in place from the 1950s through 1970s, which prohibited the depiction of zombies and use of the word "horror," among many other rules. Comics through Time: A History of Icons, Idols, and Ideas provides students and general readers a one-stop resource for researching topics, genres, works, and artists of comic books, comic strips, and graphic novels. The comprehensive and broad coverage of this set is organized chronologically by volume. Volume 1 covers 1960 and earlier; Volume 2 covers 1960–1980; Volume 3 covers 1980–1995; and Volume 4 covers 1995 to the present. The chronological divisions give readers a sense of the evolution of comics within the larger contexts of American culture and history. The alphabetically arranged entries in each volume address topics such as comics publishing, characters, imprints, genres, themes, titles, artists, writers, and more. While special attention is paid to American comics, the entries also include coverage of British, Japanese, and European comics that have influenced illustrated storytelling of the United States or are of special interest to American readers.

Legendary hall of fame illustrator Frank Frazetta leads us through the wild adventures of Dan Brand and his blood brother Tipi. Frazetta is best known as an icon of fantastic art, for his oil paints of buxom beauties and brawny barbarians (Conan, Death Dealer, Tarzan) which have set record prices on the art market. However, Frazetta's diverse career also included movie posters, humor work, album covers and newspaper strip work. Vanguard continues its multi-volume collection of Frazetta's classic works with it's second volume, the comic book adventures of White Indian." -- Back cover
