Book Synopsis Species Identification and Design Value Estimation of Wooden Members in Covered Bridges by : Alex C. Wiedenhoeft
Download or read book Species Identification and Design Value Estimation of Wooden Members in Covered Bridges written by Alex C. Wiedenhoeft and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2015-06-26 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Covered timber bridges are historic structures with unique aesthetic value. To preserve this value and maintain bridges in service, robust evaluation of their performance and safety is necessary. The strength of the timber found in covered bridges can vary considerably, not only because of age and condition, but also because of species and grade. For the practicing engineer or inspector evaluating a covered bridge, design values for existing wood members must be determined with as much accuracy as possible by account-ing for bridge-specific conditions. The current practice is to assign wood values for strength and moduli from existing specifications without specific reference to timber species, condition, or grade, which can result in an inaccurate assess-ment of the structure. This manual provides a walk-through for basic wood identification, inspection, condition assess-ment, field grading, and design value estimation for wood in covered bridges.

Book Synopsis Covered Bridges of Alabama by : Wil Elrick
Download or read book Covered Bridges of Alabama written by Wil Elrick and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2018-10-15 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With fewer than a thousand remaining in the United States, the covered bridges of Alabama are an important relic of the paths our ancestors took. Alabama's covered bridges are reminiscent of a more romantic time, when people rode in horse-drawn buggies and couples stole kisses beneath their roofs. But they are also keepers of history - structures built by former slaves and Civil War soldiers. Such places are steeped in legend, including tales of ghostly children and the hanging of a sheriff turned outlaw. Just eleven historic covered bridges survive in Alabama - the oldest dating to the 1850s - but dozens of more recently constructed spans dot the landscape. Wil Elrick and Kelly Kazek provide photos and detailed information on more than fifty Alabama bridges, reveal the fate of the state's lost bridges and delve into the haunting legends surrounding these nostalgic structures.

Book excerpt: Covered Bridges are historic pieces of American and Canadian rural history, gracing the countryside from Oregon to Tennessee and from California to New Brunswick and across Canada. In this lavishly illustrated volume Joseph D. Conwill recounts the rich, romantic history of covered bridges as they developed from early timber bridges, born out of the traditions of Medieval times, into modernized structures designed for the motorized traffic of the early twentieth century. Reflecting on the efforts to keep covered bridges in service as the face of the rural landscape is transformed, and the challenge of preserving their historic character while making them safe for modern traffic, Conwill guides the reader across the diverse range of covered bridges to be found throughout the North America.

Book Synopsis Strengthening Historic Covered Bridges to Carry Modern Traffic by : Martin B. Reece
Download or read book Strengthening Historic Covered Bridges to Carry Modern Traffic written by Martin B. Reece and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The National Historic Covered Bridge Preservation Program (NHCBP) includes preservation of covered bridges that are listed, or are eligible for listing, on the National Register of Historic Places. It also advocates research for better means of restoring and protecting historic covered bridges, using advanced technology. The book is aimed at the highest form of historic preservation: maintaining the bridge not only physically, but also functionally. While the builder's original form is preserved, the structure continues to serve as a real bridge and not a historical relic. The technology being investigated uses glass-fibre reinforced polymer (GFRP) products to increase the strength of the members with minimal increases in x-section. The study also looks at ways to mask the use of the GFRP components. This study is just the beginning of research on this topic. The concept will be refined and amplified in future projects. The book is intended primarily for engineers, contractors, researchers, consultants, bridge owners, and historic bridge preservationists to help them keep these historic structures in full service.
