Sven and Ariella are newlyweds who find their career paths leading them to Charlotte, North Carolina where Buford, Ariellas mysterious cousin and prankster is hiding under an alias. At the same time, Ariellas parents each find their own peculiar callings in the city. In their move to Charlotte, the parents are accompanied by some strange yet comical figures with ambitions of their own, one of whom is a career criminal with a dangerous past and who runs a secret organization. It is the "hooligan" with the criminal past that ultimately becomes the first victim of two murders. To add to the suspense, the police learn that they have been foiled and have the wrong suspect in custody. Later on, after the second murder takes place, the authorities are baffled in their efforts to determine if the two murders are in any way related. By a strange sequence of events, "prankster" Buford finds himself at the scenes of both murders. In the midst of these violent acts, there is also a mystery surrounding two large lizards. Buford finds he may very well have met his match and finally be forced to retire or maybe he has just found a new partner in pranksterdom and the woman of his dreams. Sven and Ariella provide commentary on the unfolding events but in the process, they reveal hypocrisies about themselves. Each have their own perspective Sven proclaims to be a devout man of faith but Ariella prides herself on being a nonbeliever. But it is Ariellas hysterically odd grandmother Annabelle, a kind of all-knowing oracle with the wisdom of the ages, who has connections everywhere and knows almost everyones secrets in this wild contemporary comedy/mystery.

Book Synopsis Reconsidering Elizabeth Bowen’s Shorter Fiction by : Heather Levy
Download or read book Reconsidering Elizabeth Bowen’s Shorter Fiction written by Heather Levy and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2020-12-03 with total page 157 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reconsidering Elizabeth Bowen’s Shorter Fiction: Dead Reckoning focuses on Elizabeth Bowen's representations of violence against the self and others. Heather Levy examines the complicity of landscape and the implications of mayhem, murder, and suicide in The Collected Stories of Elizabeth Bowen (2006) edited by Angus Wilson and The Bazaar and Other Stories (2008) edited by Alan Hepburn. It introduces five previously unpublished short story fragments and two nearly complete stories from The Elizabeth Bowen Collection at The Harry Ransom Research Center. Levy argues that Bowen's shorter fiction is a quixotic celebration of moral transgression, crime without punishment, and suicide without mourners. Bowen's compassionate response to offenders and violence anticipated the Perpetrator Trauma movement in the United States. Her innovations with the freedom of the short story produced an uncanny narration of violence. This book integrates the entirety of the scholarship on Bowen's short stories in a clear and original manner and offers a synthetic and compelling excavation of Bowen's unpublished short stories.

Book Synopsis You Child by : Betty Bolden Hooper MBA
Download or read book You Child written by Betty Bolden Hooper MBA and published by Balboa Press. This book was released on 2022-04-20 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As “You Child” my name was rarely heard above the din of 14 siblings in a black family, who managed to prosper in the Jim Crow South and in the Midwest. We were disadvantaged but we were not impoverished! Our story cover 120 years and is filled with humor, pathos and wisdom. We were diverse and resilient. Unbreakable bonds unraveled and were retied. Laugher, insight and encouragement can be appreciated by not only our descendants but also people of color as well as white readers. My parents were early entrepreneurs in the south. My dad redefined racial identity. My mother was part Choctaw Indian and a civil rights activist in the Midwest. We were Catholic. We weathered riots. One passed for white. Another organized a nationally-affiliated group. We excelled in the military. One was severely injured in Vietnam. We held once-restricted corporate positions. We carried on a life-long love affair with automobiles. Our themes and lessons are universal. We view the life of each sibling and the ways they moved through the world—in essay form, in birth order. There is overlap, of course; as I am the narrator and stories and lessons are told from my (You-Child) perspective. The lessons are collected and viewed through “You Child-Prisms”.
